I ' C-if f- F- ' rd- 'f 1, V' ' , I 5,47 ua AT Lima, in The Priory oT The IvIosT I-Ioly Rosary, in The Peruvian province oT ST. John, There has died a man oT wonderTuI virTue and holi- ness, BroTher IvIarTin De Porres. I-Iis heroic chariTy sTood especially in his services To his sick breThren. I-Ie was an example in every poinT oT Reli- gious l.iTe, and was Tor everyone in Lima, a paTTern oT virTue, a mirror oT holy conducT. So read The documenT ThaT TirsT made Blessed IvIarTin's deaTh, in I639, known To The Dominican Order aT large. I 4 I-Iis birTh in I579 was one ol Gib- scuriTy. I-Iis early liTe was filled wiTh poverTy and some oT The mosT sordid condiTions. IT was, perhaps, during Those impressionable years oT his youTh ThaT The seed oT compassion Tor his Tellow men was TirsT inSTilleCl in him. From ThaT Time on, MarTin gave sTriking indicaTions oT his TuTure sancTiTy. I-Ie kepT close To God, and wiTh The help oT Divine Grace he de- veloped, amidsT The very sgualor oT Lima, ThaT remarkable piTy and ap- preciaTion Tor human suTTering which was To characTerize his enTire liTe. AT The age oT TwenTy-Tour he dedi- caTed his IiTe To religion. IT is noT known wheTher he ever adorned The habiT oT priesThood Tor in Those days MuIaTTos were considered ouTcasTs, buT he had The singular privilege oT being permiTTed To Take solemn vows. IT was Then ThaT he became known as The FaTher oT The Poor. Once he discovered an old beggar covered wiTh inTecTed sores. I-Ie car- ried him To his room and puT him in his own bed. I-Ie provided The poor beggar wiTh everyThing he needed and Tenderly nursed him back To healTh. MarTin was severely criTicized by one oT The BroThers who gruTTly asserTed ThaT he should noT have puT such a disgusTingly dirTy man in his bed. IvIarTin replied, Compassion, my dear BroTher, is preTerabIe To cleanliness. Remember ThaT I can easily cleanse my sheeTs wiTh a liTTle soap, buT no TorrenT oT Tears could wash oTT my soul The sTain ThaT would have been made There by an unkind- ness To The unTorTunaTe. This siTuaTion was Typical oT Bless- ed Iv1arTin. IT occurred noT once, noT Twice, buT day aTTer day. IT was, perhaps, due To incidenTs such as These ThaT he became known as one who could cure The sick and iniuredg one who could perTorm miracles. This was his conTribuTion To The people oT Lima. SensaTionaI? World- shaking? ..... No. IT was quieT and simple, buT wiThouT a doubT iT was greaT.

DAVID NORRIS When Jeanne smiled, iT looked like The smile oT an average Teenager. When she laughed, her iubilanT voice was iusT as gay as any oTher sixTeen year old girl. BuT Jeanne wasn'T as gay and by no means was she aver- age. For Jeanne was diTTerenT, or so she ThoughT. She had problems- She could menTion neuroses ThaT even Freud hadn'T heard oT. l-ler Teacher wasn'T really a Teacher, buT a secreT agenT senT by some evil Torce To spy on her and reporT his observaTions To a horrible man who wore a black cape and who delighTed in evicTing elderly ladies inTo The cold, cold snow. l-ler TaTher was in realiTy a cruel TaskmasTer whose sole purpose on earTh was To oppress her by demand- ing perTecTion Trom her. The cause oT This line oT Thinking lay direcTly be- hind her misleading smile and a Tew inches higher. While oThers used Their brains To hope and To haTe and To love, Jeanne Franklin devoTed her mind exclusively To The TabricaTion oT her closely conTined, peTal-Thin world. Feeling ThaT she was under consTanT surveillance, Jeanne ineviT- ably sTrove Tor The perTecTion she ThoughT was demanded Tor her. She worked Teverishly Tor excellence-To sTave oTT her Teacher, To saTisTy her TaTher. DespiTe The TacT ThaT she was really guiTe sensiTive and Teminine. Jeanne regarded The emoTions as guiTe deceiving and even Treacher- ous as Tar as dealings wiTh The oppo- siTe sex were concerned. l-lowever, These belieTs and Tears were well hid- den behind a cleverly consTrucTed Tacade oT gay shopping sprees and equally gay daTes. OuTwardly, Jeanne was everyThing a girl her age could hope To beg inTelligenT, Tairly popular, a good dancer and noT Too diTTiculT To resT one's eyes upon. lnTrospecTively, however, she could noT undersTand how a girl such as BeTTy, Tor example, her only close Triend, could be hurT again and again in her conTinuous love liTe. She un- doubTedly didn'T Teel, as perhaps BeTTy unknowingly did, ThaT more Than halT The pleasure oT eaTing The honey is in being sTung To geT iT. Jeanne Franklin, she would Tell herselT, you won'T be like BeTTy, quick To love and easily hurT. And so wiTh a well-planned, Thoroughly prepared scripT, Jeanne Franklin seT pin To play her role on The sTage oT 1 e.
