While we have anTicipaTed This day since our TirsT conTusing Freshman day aT Adams, iT is human naTure ThaT we should regreT This Torward sTep and Take iT wiTh some cauTion and a liTTle ap- prehension. We look back on all The Tun and sorrows we have experienced while evolving Trom The world oT adolescence, Through The Teenage inTo The realms oT adulThood. Memories oT Those days oT scam- pering, clamoring Through The halls, our only ThoughTs being To geT To our nexT class beTore ThaT dreaded laTe bell raised iTs harsh voice in scorn, make us a liTTle more benev- olenT Toward l3reshies who are go- ing Through The same anTics Today. The old rough and ready cowboy has changed greaTly in The pasT Tew Television seasons. The hero, a clean-cuT man, usua'Iy more well-spoken Than The oThers. no longer rides The range on a pinTo or a whiTe sTaIIion. IThe days oT The sTagecoach chases are gone Torever.I InsTead, he siTs aT his desk in The sheriTT's oTTice or enioys an opera wiTh a beauTiTul senoriTa. As in The case oT Paladin, he may also quoTe Trom lvlonTaigne or Shakespeare. The bad guy, on The oTher hand, speaks in The Jack Webb monosylla- bic Tashion and usually wears a mus- Tache. There is no such Thing as a gang anymore. Three men Travel TogeTher, one oT whom has more brains Than The oThers. One oT The oTher men is very sTupid. I-le usually blunders and causes The sheriTT or hero To geT wise To The seTup by Talking Too much. The boss may be a prominenT ciTizen oT The Town. The TrighTened girl never suspecTs him and unwiTTingly Tells him The sheriTT's plans To capTure The ouT- laws. The hero oTTen has To Take a spoiled young girl on a long iour- ney. IT iT is a serial, he leaves her aT Their desTinaTion a new person, com- pIeTeIy aware oT her spoiled behavi- or, repenTanT, and anxious To make amends Tor The Trouble she has caused. IT, however, iT is a single sTory, The hero reTorms her and Then marries her. The hero knows all The Trails in The surrounding woods or mounTains. I-le oTTen has an Indian Triend who is his blood-broTher and who helps him Track. Every cowboy has a Theme song Today. I-le musT have some mark To disTinguish him Trom ordinary men. This is done Through a silver buIIeT, a chess knighT, a special gun, or a calling card. I-le wears The same shirT ThroughouT his enTire Television ca- reer. There is oTTen a iesTer in The pic- Ture who doesn'T seem To have much THEYRE GUI ' T HAT AWAY -' I -1 knowledge, buT provides The humor- ous angle oT The sTory. I-Ie isn'T hand- some. I-le mighT be an old Tellow wiTh a beard or a young Tellow wiTh a limp. SomeTimes The hero is a UniTed STaTes lvlarshalq someTimes he is a gambler. I-le is Torced To have iT ouT wiTh an ouTlaw, much againsT his will. Il-le always wins, incidenTaI- Iy.I I-le oTTen Takes cases, as a law- yer would. One oT The greaTesT changes in Television wesTerns is ThaT The TiTTy- shoT six-shooTer has Tinally become obsoIeTe. Now, The viewer sees The men reload Their guns once in a while. In recenT seasons, The heroes oT Television wesTerns have cerTainIy evolved Trom common boys in love wiTh only Their horses To educaTed romeos.
