Yeah, I haxe no one now that Anna is , , , , 5-009 and me all alone in that big house. It needs some young pmplcpo HI l7C'llCt that ? IW Ilfltn' now. How much is ..Thut,S 552-ivy Here you are. Wriit a minuteg I have the change. Okay? Yes, thatls Hne. Bye now, Mike spoke aloud to himself. I should have known better than to ask her how she felt. She always gives her case history. The rest of that day and the two following it passed uneventful except for the excitement mounting up in Mike. Finally, Friday dawned. Mike got up, looked out of his window and was disap- pointed. He did want this extra speeial day to be sunny but instead it was raining, He had decided that day that he got the tele- gram that today would be a special day and he would not open the store. He went around the house tidying up and in the eight years sinee his wife had died he had heeome quite adept at it. The two hours passed quickly and be-fore he knew it, it was time to go to the railroad station at Sioux Falls to meet Arpad and his family. He was dressed in a new gray suit. It was not raining now, but the ground was still wet. He happily boarded the bus for Sioux Falls. He had to wait only about ten minutes until the train pulled in. There, standing by themselves, were three people. A man, a woman, and a young boy. Mike went di- rectly to them and spoke to them in their native tongue. Arpad Dolinski ?l' Yes, You must be Michael Harron, This is my wife Klara and my son Arnold. Hello, Klara, Arnold. Welconae to South Dakota. Come, we Will talk I2-fef when we get to the house. Tell me, Arpad, C10 YOU Speak BUY EUS' lish?', He answered in unsteady broken English. Yes I do know some but not too much. Ile uneonseiously slipped baek to his native tongue. It's not the latest thing but its elean and in good eondilion. Dont feel strange. Before long ue will be one family '. And so Arpad and his little' family did heeome' used to Amerua and in a lew months luoth Arpael and Klara learncd to Q ,, af speak English well enough to carry on a conversation. Arpad worked hard in the little grocery store and soon everyone be- gan to like and respect him. It did not take long for Mike to tind out that Arpad was not an ordinary farm boy. He added the prices of the goods mentally and it was always correct. He spoke in con- versation as if he knew exactly what he was talking about. No, he was not an ordinary farm boy. Soon Arpad started going out at night by himself. It was no secret that he had to take the bus and that his ticket was to Sioux Falls. At first he went once a month, Then it was once every two weeks. Mike did not say anything to Arpad because tCfn1ll1z11ed on Page SSD 17
