L- 1 -ss-Q frm r . s FOR SOME unexplainable reason. each summer sees the backs of men toiling over a small patch of earth. This bit of land is deceivingly referred to in various manuals as a garden. Actually it is a neatly combed, well-watered home for worms and ants. lt also serves the important function of a feeding ground for feathered friends whose diet is excellently suited to the surround- ings. Occasionally. green things sprout from between rocks and earth. Most. however. are quickly eliminated by the peculiar effects of exposure. Hooding. and small children. The few shoots that sursixe this ordeal become excellent sources of strength and energy. Ants. bugs. worms. and grubs thrive on them. lhaxe heard of one instance where a group of ants. so Xitalized by a patch of tomatoes. tore down the back fence. and to the horror of the hapless gardener. lifted his house off its foundation and dis- appeared with it down the road singing such lively ditties as Roll Out the Barrel, and This Ol' House . From time to time, in isolated cases, a hardy specimen or two reaches full matu- rity, This often occasions a scene of wild. uncontrollable celebration as the proud nat- uralist shares the glory of the moment with friends and neighbors. On more than one occasion, however, the affair has terminated in sorrow, when our friend, awaking the next morning with a dull headache from too much wheat juice, Ends that in the midst of the orgy his proud plant was ROY IX PAL PAUL HOPFER crushed by the misguided foot of some jubilant neighbor. With all this to look upon. one might gather the impression that gardens are hope- less. After much consideration, I have come to the conclusion that the garden itself is a good idea. It is only mans foolish ap- plication which has caused its failure. I offer as the solution, the weed garden. Such a garden is cheap, exceptionally hardy. and, except for the incidental re- moxal of a carrot or two, requires no atten- tion at all. The gardener need only go out some fine morning, mark off a section of ground, designate it garden, sit back and watch it grow. l-le is guaranteed freedom from such pests as birds, worms, insects, small children and jubilant neighbors. This garden should go very well with modern houses since its prime recluisite is func- tionalismfi It will propogate equally well in poor and good soil. in window box or penthouse roof. lt will give the admirer a relief from the ordinary, row upon row monotony of gardening with an informal multi-xaried arrangement of vegetation. l call upon my fellow-gardeners to join in one concentrated effort to or erthrow the old garden concept before it is too late. Descend in mass upon the crops, uproot them, destroy their seeds and scatter their remains, so that the weeds may feed on them, uninhibited, to the joy and leisure of the urban gardener. 19

l , i I 1 GOOD DAY! I'm Cappy the Cap and this is my friend, Garb the Gown. Garb and I have been business partners for a long time. We have stood by, body and head. We'x'e spent many hectic times together all due to those characters-namely Seniors. We'x'e been admired, abused, pulled at and insulted by these humans. Let me tell you about all the various types of Seniors we have come into contact with. There are knock-kneed, fat, skinny, lanky, rolly-polly, stumpy and lop-sided Seniors. But there are only three types of Gowns, short, medium, and long. About three months before graduation the Seniors fill out slips stating their height and weight. It's up to Garb to see that all the Gowns are assigned accordingly to the Seniors. It never fails! Tubby Senior will get the petite size. But,'i he moans, I thought I'd lose weight by June. Then one girl will get a Gown that reaches her knees. How was I to remember that I'd be wear- ing five-inch heels today! she tuggingly states. Loppy, the lop-sided Senior, starts using profane language and can't under- stand why they can't manufacture balanced Gowns. fWhy doesnt he balance up?j My end is the head. The Seniors are ex- pected to know their head measurements too, by graduation. Some must practice head shrinking because when the time comes-whoops! goes the Cap down the face. We've had strict training in How to Prevent Sliding but can't always keep our- selves composed. When some of these char- acters had their heads measured they must have had swelled heads or mosquito bites because once we perch upon their heads it looks as though we are up on the thirty- third plateau. AP AND GOWN ESTA-ANN HALBREICH Oh, my, such woes we have! Some char- acters will just throw Garb and I around while others will pat and smooth us. There are three different attitudes among the Seniors: Qlj Isn't it great! I'm grad- uating! fly The blase approach-I am graduating, and lastly f3j Wfhew! I finally got out of the joint! flj Senior proudly wears his Gown. It is on straight and his head is held erectly, the Cap soaring above, the tassel gaily bob- bing. I-Iis face is aglow as he vainly searches for the familiar faces. flj Senior nonchalantly walks down the aisle, shrugging his shoulders. His Gown hangs limply, his Cap is tilted and his face is expressionless. C33 Senior wearily trudges down the aisle. I-Ie looks from side to side, he cant believe that he is finally graduating. It's been Ll hard struggle and he can't wait for the exercise to end. His Gown collar is crooked and his Cap is too small. QI-Ie measured his head two years ago when he was .inppoied to graduate!j No matter what kind of a Senior you are, you have attained the title of Senior and are a candidate for graduation. Upon your body is Garb the Gown and me, Cappy the Cap. Wear us anyway you like as long as you are comfortable. VVe've lasted this long, we'll be able to endure a few more years of work. It would be very boring if our jobs were routine. You characters certainly make it interesting and give us something to talk about!
