many generations and involwng widely semrated lands. lf we were asked to name the unifying theme that runs iirougn me ennre set of pictures it would be 'The Growth of Liberty under Law. ln the lobby itself, the tlfxee reproductions of me Herter murals from the State Capitol in Lincoln, lfebraska show the development of law from the days of imperial Home to me beginnings of our own republic. The first of these, 'The Appeal to Caesar, recalls to our not only the public order that the Romom empire extended over the fairest and most ciinlized portions of me eartiis surface but also the supreme respect shown for the individual rights of the Rornmt citizen. The Signing of the Magna Carta remmds us no less vitndly of the vigor- ous measures taken to bring within bounds the power of the king through the corruzined strength ot other elements in medieval England. The recognition of basic human rights embodied in the Great Charter, we may recall, served to restrain the central authority then and in later crises and thus helped to effect and mamtain a proper balance for the general good. ln me third mural, 'The Signing of the Constitution , we behold the corn- pletion of that document so fitmgly described by a great English statesman as tithe most wonderful work ever struck off at a given time by the brain and purpnse of Here as the climax of the long historic process is the living constitution of a government ot defined areas and limited powers carrying within itself the seeds of its own future growth and offering a set ot checks and balances nicely designed to safeguard liberty while preserving law. ln the background at the beginning of the marble stairs, stands l'Bunker Hill with its embattled farmer preparing to meet in the defense of freedom the menacing line of advancing redcoats. Across the lobby at the entrance to Memorial Hall, our school ' Roll of Honor Wim its long lists of those former students who gave their lives in the service of our country brings the story of Bunker Hill up to our own times. The price of invaluable human lives must still urnriappily be paid to maintain the freedom that is ours. As We mount the staircase, 'The Signing of the Declaration ot lnde- pendenceu reminds us of the part played by our own Iohn Adams in the fight to launch a new nation. lt serves no less to revive memories of those truths We hold to be self-evident upon which our whole structure ot free self-govern- ment has been erected. At the summit, most appropriately stands The Making of the Flag as the smlool that in a sense contains within itself the entire story of the slow, pain- ful progress of mankind across the centuries to the rights and blessings that we enjoy. Let us hope that these vivid reminders may carry their message to each of us and abide with us as lifelong memories to strengthen our devotion to the cause of Liberty under Law. 5
