OO fun 2 5 TIM MCMURRAY glanced up toward the almost bare wall being not quite empty because of the small fadlng calender stuck there He squmted a second and then tum1ng hrs l1ght wavy haired head back to the paper headed Monthly Report Union Pacific Railroad began to scratch out the date Ianuary twentieth 1869 He put down the pen got up and went over to the little coal stove whlch was of course rlght plumb in the middle of the floor With a quick thrust of the little shovel he sllcl the coal into the fire closed the door and walked back to the desk Look mg out through the frosted panes of glass he saw Nat Colmy as big as he was having trouble tramp mg through the deep snow drifts headed toward old Iebs house Old Ieb the d1str1ct supervisor didnt seem to be too well lately and Tlm well he was sort of assigned to the job of writing the monthly re port this month 1n old Iebs place lt seemed that the whole crew agreed that Ieb needed a well eamed vacatlon from this Railroad bu1ld1n and it was up to Tim to suggest it ln the report Picking up the pen once more he began agam Received tlmber for new station house for Railroad 1n time to f11'11Sh construction before start of annual heavy snowfall Will be ready for use in the Spring when the trams begin runmng on a schedule He continued wr1tmg tellmg Just how Big Fred Wells broke two ribs fallmg from the newly constructed water tower and how it could have been prevented He told how the men felt upon heanng that the road was nearly completed and how old Ieb was growing feebler every day Once it was only one of Iebs dreams the spanning of the continent by rail but now well to him it didnt seem quite true Finally Tim ended it after devoting the last three lines for Ieb s vacation request. It was dark when he retumed except for the little oil lamp above the desk. He unfolded the papers once more and slowly crossed out the last few lines.
