enjoyed On my trophy room walls there were hangrng nothrng but drf ferent calrbre guns and nfles and I was now determrned to have a few stuffed trophres to add to the collec tron so the hunting trrp From where I was seated I could see where the hrgh mountarn stream swelled rtself mto powerful falls that fell lrke shrny blue satrn rnto the lake Admrrrng thrs scene I decrded to re marn here whrle Chuck went on ahead We agreed to thrs spot as a meetmg place before the sun set After eatrng a couple of sandwrches from my pack I drscovered my drrnk rng canteen was empty and I was thrrsty Takrng my gun wrth me just rn case I proceeded to the falls where the water ran clear My thrrst once quenched I frlled the canteen and was putt ng on the cover when some thrng rustled rn the bushe a few yard away As q.rretly as I could wrth my gun cocked I crept up to where the rustlrng came from I brushed the overhangmg branches gently asrde and there lokrng strarght at me was a young deer I dont know who was more startled he or I Nervously he jerked back and srde wards strll wrth hrs rrght foreleg the same posrtron I stepped closer then I surmr ed what must have hap pened Perhaps whrle scratchrng rn the snow for food he had mrstakenly stepped rnto a trap left by fox hunters before the snows came The frrghtened anrmal trred prtrfully to flee but each attempt only caused the sharp steel teeth to prerce deeper rnto hrs flesh Collectrng myself I hurrred back and got my pack whrch contarned a krt used for emergency purposes Hurt rng hrm as lrttle as possrble I frnally removed hrs foot from the trap and held fast to hrs leg After a somewhat persuasrve strug gle I managed to get hrm ur a lymg posrtron I poured cool water over the crrmson wound and patted rt dry I placed a small splmt where the bone mrght have been broken and bound rt evenly wrth sterrle bandage Easrng the anrmal to rts feet I gave hrm an assured pat on the back and he hob bled off frrst uncertamly on only three legs then uslng the newly mended one he regamed hrs confrdence and was once more on hrs way The sun was well up rn the sky and puffy thunderheads dotted the clear blue heavens as I lazrly dozed off to sleep It was qurte late when Chuck re turned Iubrlantly he set down hrs game before us and rmmedrately sought the food rn hrs pack Between muffled mouthsful of the sandwich rn an enloyable adventure for hrmself He had shot two buck and mrssed another rn hrs hunt and he felt rather good about rt all too It wasnt trl we prepared to start back drd he realrze that I had not shot any game Well he reasoned Cant all of us have good luck eh R1ckre ' My reesponse was a srmple nod as we each lrfted a deer onto our packs We agarn started toward the cabm trarl leavrng behrnd the purple shad owed mountatrns that rfected up mto the smokrness of the snowdrrfts were shaded rmagrnatrvely wrth washes of rce blue and trnklrng crystals hung on bare brown branches Slowly the snu set thus endrng a day of huntrng for Chuck and me 2U ' ' - , I I I ' I , , I I ' , ' . , , . i - . .
