went past wrthout leavmg anythrng qurck look through a handful of mall came back and left that letter and how he sard rn hrs usual cheerful way Its a letter for you Io Ann then wrth Io Anns lrps twrsted rnto a qurck smrle her dark eyes twrnkled and she went on thrnkrng out loud I remember how I qurckly dropped e shovel and made my way toward the fence thanked the marlman for e letter and ran up the walk rnto e warm krtchen How dumbfounded I was when I saw the letter wasnt from Eddre I remember askrng my self Who could rt be from? because I knew Eddre was the only one I usually got mall from on Wednesday I frantrcally tore open the envelope tellrng myself that rt couldnt be from Walter Why I took rt for granted everythrng between us was all past and forgotten Not as far as I was concerned because as long as I lrve Ill never forget hrm but hrs part of rt I gathered that I Just wasnt hrs type when he never wrote after the last trme I saw hrm but from the looks of thrngs rt appears that he hasnt so easrly forgotten exther Gee the last trme I saw hrm' That was three years ago when I was only srxteen younger and more dopey than I am now He was only erghteen then but plenty old for hrs age rn appearance and rn hrs way How matter of fact he had that letter worded fCome to thrnk of rt'9 You d hardly even call rt a letter rt was really just a notel He always drd say thrngs rn the oddest but nrcest ways I even remember every word of the letter It went Dear Io Ann I was just released from the Naval Hosprtal here rn Calrfomra Ive been 13 here qurte sometrme ftoo long for my moneyl wrth what they call war fatrgue By the trme you get thrs letter Ill be drscharged and on my way home Ill arrrve Frrday mormng I can hardly wart to see you agarn Ill bet you re even prettrer than ever Does your nose strll turn up and does rt have as many freckles as rt drd the last trme I saw you? m all set to parnt the town red and I expect you to help me Ill stop by at seven and prck you up Frrday nrght so have your parnt brush and red parnt all set As ever wrth love Walter It struck me funny how he sounded Iust as rf we had been correspondrng every day Here rs a fellow who can tell you we re gorng out such and such a nrght and belreve me youll go He has somethmg and plenty of somehow or other at a frrst glance he strrkes you as berng just plam brg All hrs features seem so very mascu lrne At a frrst glrmpse you gather hes clumsy but on closer observat on you notrce that Walter rs extremely well porsed Hrs eyes to me are hrs outstandrng feature They are the bluest blue Ive ever seen' Hrs harr rs black and wavy I remember how hrs harr would fall rnto rrnglets from the beads of sweat on hrs forehead whrle wed be dancrng together Walter rs any grrls rdeal and I rnclude myself ur wrth the lot Hes so drfferent from Eddre I know Eddres swell and everythrng and sure weve been go mg together srnce Walter stopped wrrtrng but Walter s back now and that krnd of makes thrngs drfferent Eddre really never ' G ' - n I . . . even asked me to marry him he land everyone elsej just takes it tor granted He cant even compare to Walter Sure hes got ha1r but 1ts blond and when 1t falls rn h1s tace 1t falls stralght as 1t always 1S He s tall too but lean not hunky and h1s eyes are Just a pla1n old brovsm But they have a good natured expression them' Gee 1IS almost seven now' Wal ter ought to be here soon I ieel kmd of funny breakmg my date w1th Edd1e but when he comes Mother can tell hmm somethmg unexpected turned up Io Ann' Walters here' After ar rang1ng her ha1r 1n a soft co1ffure she put her comb back 1n 1ts place on her dress1ng table and took a last look 1n the mlrror and flew down the SIGIIS 1nto Walters welcom1ng arms When the usual how are yous and hellos were over they started on the1r way to pamt the town red F1rst they went to dmner at L1ros then danclng at the Malambo Club After that they went for a r1de 1n a Hansom 1Il Central Park The cl1p clop of the horses steady pace seemed so remote from the bolsterousness of the metropol1s From the park they walk ed down Broadway to F1tt1eth Street was as beautlful a starl1t n1ght as N if anyone could ever have dreamed of so they went up to the Observation Tower ot the RCA Bu1ld1ng After star gazmg for about an hour they both agreed that they were pretty t1red and so began the1r long trek home As they walked along the last block before commg to Io Anns house I Ann suddenly began to face the reallty that all the hop1ng and dreamlng of the n1ght that was gradually commg to an end was just fantasy All the sugar coat1ng of Walters personahty had 1n the space of an even1ng slowly melted away and h1S dom1 neer1ng conce1tedness seemed to ooze out and cover up the good looks that were h1s sole asset upon wh1ch he depended so very much to ga1n inends irlends that he would never be able to hold Io Ann wlshed o hard that she had not so thought lessly walked out on Edd1e that eve mng If she had the evenmg to spend over she would go Wlfh Eddle she thought to herself but now It was too ate As they turned up the walk to the house Io Ann caught a gllmpse of a fam1l1ar hgure curled up on the front porch she Smlled and hoped Edd1e looked at her smzled and sa1d D1d you have a n1ce t1me ' W1th an askmg for forg1veness look Io Ann shook her head and came back somwhat slowly wrshmg that Walter had never exlsted wlth N no Wllh a qulck smlle and a new sparkle to those good natured eyes Edd1e sa1d w1th a tone of pleasure m h1S soft vo1ce I k1nd of thought you wouldnt have a n1ce txme thats why I Wdlted 14 - . in ' ' I Q ll I ll I - S .
