of a mlraculous power which healed both the bod1es and souls of men Bernadette however was unable to pick up agam the broken threads of her life for she found that the only door she cared to enter led to Him and the entrance was through the Convent which she entered shortly afterward Her Journey beyond the door contmued a short t1me later for she was cla1med by God seven years from that t1me when she was only 22 Three years after the death of Ber nadette m the wmter of 1840 Ioseph DeVeuster was born His g r o w in g years were spent in a small farm house where there was always the smell of hot bread and spicy soup When both his older sister and brother chose a rel1g1ous vocation his father wlshed h1m to become a merchant so that he would be in a pos1t1on to sup years The DeVeusters skimped and saved to send Ioseph to school Al though learning d1d not come easily to h1m he appl1ed hlmself d1l1gently and soon became a good student With the aid of h1s books which he remforced with two strong hsts he proved that he could take care of him self in all sltuatlons However as the time approached for h1m to assume h1s duties as a merchant he became more and more despondent for he felt that a worldly life was not for him He fmally decld ed contrary to his fathers W1SheS to become a theologlcal student He en tered a sem1nary and was tutored by his brother who was also studymg for the pnesthood By a strange Chdln of circumstances it happened that he took his brothers place on a ship 9 sailing to Hawau This tw1st of fate proved to be the steppmg stone of Father Dam1ans adventurous hte on Molakal There he literally worked miracles w1th the lepers with whom he had chosen to l1ve They were ugly mlsshapen and foul smelling and yet from the first he m1ngled freely with them showing no fear or repulslon of thelr mutllated bodies He made cleanliness of body mmd and soul the goal of each leper The flower gardens before each dwelllng bore mute testimony to his unceaslng encouragement of the pursuit of beauty After fourteen years of mm1ster1ng to the unclean he himself contract ed that most feared and loathsome o all d1seases-leprosy In spite of h1 affl1ct1on he contmued h1s work unt1l hrs death To the government officials whose aid he had sought he had been a nuisance to medical men he had been just another leper and to the clergy he remamed the 1deal subject for a sermon Only the lxvmg dead on Mo lakai to whom he had brought l1fe was he the greatest man al1ve Greatness IS found m honesty Jus tlce nghteousness and 1n serv1ce to our fellow man Many have been ac claimed for then deeds and have found the1r well deserved niches in the Hall of the Great but for each one such as this there are hundreds more who deserve that honor no less whose deeds have gone unlauded These are the teachers doctors and lawyers who dedlcate their llves to the serv1ce of manklnd Who can deny that these too deserve to be ranked among the truly great?
