OO fun 2 5 TIM MCMURRAY glanced up toward the almost bare wall being not quite empty because of the small fadlng calender stuck there He squmted a second and then tum1ng hrs l1ght wavy haired head back to the paper headed Monthly Report Union Pacific Railroad began to scratch out the date Ianuary twentieth 1869 He put down the pen got up and went over to the little coal stove whlch was of course rlght plumb in the middle of the floor With a quick thrust of the little shovel he sllcl the coal into the fire closed the door and walked back to the desk Look mg out through the frosted panes of glass he saw Nat Colmy as big as he was having trouble tramp mg through the deep snow drifts headed toward old Iebs house Old Ieb the d1str1ct supervisor didnt seem to be too well lately and Tlm well he was sort of assigned to the job of writing the monthly re port this month 1n old Iebs place lt seemed that the whole crew agreed that Ieb needed a well eamed vacatlon from this Railroad bu1ld1n and it was up to Tim to suggest it ln the report Picking up the pen once more he began agam Received tlmber for new station house for Railroad 1n time to f11'11Sh construction before start of annual heavy snowfall Will be ready for use in the Spring when the trams begin runmng on a schedule He continued wr1tmg tellmg Just how Big Fred Wells broke two ribs fallmg from the newly constructed water tower and how it could have been prevented He told how the men felt upon heanng that the road was nearly completed and how old Ieb was growing feebler every day Once it was only one of Iebs dreams the spanning of the continent by rail but now well to him it didnt seem quite true Finally Tim ended it after devoting the last three lines for Ieb s vacation request. It was dark when he retumed except for the little oil lamp above the desk. He unfolded the papers once more and slowly crossed out the last few lines. If these are the only qual1t1es of greatness thousands upon thousands of executrves professors and pol1t1cal leaders are el1g1ble for thls honor Greatness IS composed of qual1t1es that may not be measured rn worldly terms s1nce 1t IS a super natural glit of God bestowed wxthout the COgI'l1llO1'l or perm1ss1on of 1lS possessor A person granted th1s g1ft can wlthstand all attacks agalnst h1s ldeals and h1s bellefs IS able to overcome the der1s1on and r1d1cule of publlc opmlon There are hundreds of such men and women devotmg the1r l1ves to the propagatlon of pr1nc1ples whlch are for the common good heedless of the personal SCICI'1llC9 such work demands Ind1v1duals eager to sh1rk the1r obhgatlons or too complacent to acknowledge them argue that such personal sacrlhce IS unnecessary They fall to reallze that the deed of a s1xteen year old g1rl Ioan ot Arc saved the entlre country of France and that alone St Patnck at 60 r1d Ireland of the snakes They can not comprehend that the great number ot hves saved 1ust1t1ed the SClZCl.'lflCe of a smgle 1nd1v1dual Thls IS not surpnsmg smce they nerther l1ve 1n France nor are annoyed by snakes In addltlon they conslder such persons and deeds as anclent h1story They would be most sur pnsed to hnd that as recently as 1830 the daughter of a mlracle of a poor farmer was the mstrument Bernadette Souboro1s cla1med to see an appantlon of the Blessed Vlfgln Consequently she was scotfed at and rldlculed but she dared to stand up for what she knew to be true After several reoccurrences of the appantlon a fountaln covered at the preclse spot peared to Bernadette She the waters of th1s tountaln of clear water was dls where the v1s1on had ap won such acclarm when proved to be the source 8 OO I :n .F 3? t SS ? Q: - of a mlraculous power which healed both the bod1es and souls of men Bernadette however was unable to pick up agam the broken threads of her life for she found that the only door she cared to enter led to Him and the entrance was through the Convent which she entered shortly afterward Her Journey beyond the door contmued a short t1me later for she was cla1med by God seven years from that t1me when she was only 22 Three years after the death of Ber nadette m the wmter of 1840 Ioseph DeVeuster was born His g r o w in g years were spent in a small farm house where there was always the smell of hot bread and spicy soup When both his older sister and brother chose a rel1g1ous vocation his father wlshed h1m to become a merchant so that he would be in a pos1t1on to sup years The DeVeusters skimped and saved to send Ioseph to school Al though learning d1d not come easily to h1m he appl1ed hlmself d1l1gently and soon became a good student With the aid of h1s books which he remforced with two strong hsts he proved that he could take care of him self in all sltuatlons However as the time approached for h1m to assume h1s duties as a merchant he became more and more despondent for he felt that a worldly life was not for him He fmally decld ed contrary to his fathers W1SheS to become a theologlcal student He en tered a sem1nary and was tutored by his brother who was also studymg for the pnesthood By a strange Chdln of circumstances it happened that he took his brothers place on a ship 9 sailing to Hawau This tw1st of fate proved to be the steppmg stone of Father Dam1ans adventurous hte on Molakal There he literally worked miracles w1th the lepers with whom he had chosen to l1ve They were ugly mlsshapen and foul smelling and yet from the first he m1ngled freely with them showing no fear or repulslon of thelr mutllated bodies He made cleanliness of body mmd and soul the goal of each leper The flower gardens before each dwelllng bore mute testimony to his unceaslng encouragement of the pursuit of beauty After fourteen years of mm1ster1ng to the unclean he himself contract ed that most feared and loathsome o all d1seases-leprosy In spite of h1 affl1ct1on he contmued h1s work unt1l hrs death To the government officials whose aid he had sought he had been a nuisance to medical men he had been just another leper and to the clergy he remamed the 1deal subject for a sermon Only the lxvmg dead on Mo lakai to whom he had brought l1fe was he the greatest man al1ve Greatness IS found m honesty Jus tlce nghteousness and 1n serv1ce to our fellow man Many have been ac claimed for then deeds and have found the1r well deserved niches in the Hall of the Great but for each one such as this there are hundreds more who deserve that honor no less whose deeds have gone unlauded These are the teachers doctors and lawyers who dedlcate their llves to the serv1ce of manklnd Who can deny that these too deserve to be ranked among the truly great? It was Wednesday and Id been shovel mg snow when the mallman came along I remember how he almost 12 went past wrthout leavmg anythrng qurck look through a handful of mall came back and left that letter and how he sard rn hrs usual cheerful way Its a letter for you Io Ann then wrth Io Anns lrps twrsted rnto a qurck smrle her dark eyes twrnkled and she went on thrnkrng out loud I remember how I qurckly dropped e shovel and made my way toward the fence thanked the marlman for e letter and ran up the walk rnto e warm krtchen How dumbfounded I was when I saw the letter wasnt from Eddre I remember askrng my self Who could rt be from? because I knew Eddre was the only one I usually got mall from on Wednesday I frantrcally tore open the envelope tellrng myself that rt couldnt be from Walter Why I took rt for granted everythrng between us was all past and forgotten Not as far as I was concerned because as long as I lrve Ill never forget hrm but hrs part of rt I gathered that I Just wasnt hrs type when he never wrote after the last trme I saw hrm but from the looks of thrngs rt appears that he hasnt so easrly forgotten exther Gee the last trme I saw hrm' That was three years ago when I was only srxteen younger and more dopey than I am now He was only erghteen then but plenty old for hrs age rn appearance and rn hrs way How matter of fact he had that letter worded fCome to thrnk of rt'9 You d hardly even call rt a letter rt was really just a notel He always drd say thrngs rn the oddest but nrcest ways I even remember every word of the letter It went Dear Io Ann I was just released from the Naval Hosprtal here rn Calrfomra Ive been 13 here qurte sometrme ftoo long for my moneyl wrth what they call war fatrgue By the trme you get thrs letter Ill be drscharged and on my way home Ill arrrve Frrday mormng I can hardly wart to see you agarn Ill bet you re even prettrer than ever Does your nose strll turn up and does rt have as many freckles as rt drd the last trme I saw you? m all set to parnt the town red and I expect you to help me Ill stop by at seven and prck you up Frrday nrght so have your parnt brush and red parnt all set As ever wrth love Walter It struck me funny how he sounded Iust as rf we had been correspondrng every day Here rs a fellow who can tell you we re gorng out such and such a nrght and belreve me youll go He has somethmg and plenty of somehow or other at a frrst glance he strrkes you as berng just plam brg All hrs features seem so very mascu lrne At a frrst glrmpse you gather hes clumsy but on closer observat on you notrce that Walter rs extremely well porsed Hrs eyes to me are hrs outstandrng feature They are the bluest blue Ive ever seen' Hrs harr rs black and wavy I remember how hrs harr would fall rnto rrnglets from the beads of sweat on hrs forehead whrle wed be dancrng together Walter rs any grrls rdeal and I rnclude myself ur wrth the lot Hes so drfferent from Eddre I know Eddres swell and everythrng and sure weve been go mg together srnce Walter stopped wrrtrng but Walter s back now and that krnd of makes thrngs drfferent Eddre really never ' G ' - n I . . .
