OUR SOLDIERS 1n the held have leamed to be wary of short cuts that seem to he open before them 1n very 1nv1t1ng fashion They know that they cannot trust these apparently smooth and easy roads For these paths that seem dlrect and safe often abound in cleverly planted land mines and they have frequently been charted for devastatlng artillery hre The souvenirs thrown care les ly about as lf by an enemy fleemg 1n pan1c are ingeniously designed booby traps in which lurks death for the unwary In the realm of ldeas there are booby traps 1ust as devxhshly mgenlous in tneir app al and in the power of evtl that they conceal agalnst the day when some heedless wayfarers cur1os1ty or 1m pat ence will brmg on h1s ovtm destructlon In the realm of 1deas all too o'ten has ldeahsm been the v1ct1m of des1gnmg and un pr1nc1pled persons In the realm of 1deas as in that of actlon bom of such 1deas enthusiasm wlthout the guidance of reason and good Judgment rapidly degenerates mto bl1nd fanat1c1sm Without go1ng eek the roundabout course we should explore caut1ously and thoroughly any proposed way to the solutlon of a problem rather than rush unthmkingly along the first path that seems to offer ltself straight to our goal In our thrnkmg we must be on our guard constantly against the labels the formulas and the smear terms and phrases which propagandxsts offer as short cuts to the solutlon of the pohtical econcrmc and social ev11s that beset us We must stop and look into the competence of the sources from whlch we have denved our knowledge the honesty of these supposed author1t1es and the logical force of the arguments that they advance with such be gu1l1ng rhetor1c We must not carry over our Amerlcan fondness for t1me saving devices and labor savmg gadgets into the realm of ldeas and the held of action ar1s1ng from such ldeas We must be wary of short cuts there above all Let us hope that our latest group of graduates have formed here the hablt of placing reason above emot1on of suspendlng pudgment of we1gh1ng ev1dence and of reachlng a ratlonal solution to problem Never was it more important than now that thc CIIIZGIIS of our democratlc repubhc should follow such procedures lf we are to help our elves and all mankmd ln the difhcult days ahead C . . . . . . . . . , . 3 . .
