STAR DUST I FOUND it, discarded and forgotten, while rummaging through grandfath- er's trunk. It was a faded tintype of a lovely girl. The raven tresses were imprisoned in a high, shiny pompa- dour and the cheeks painted only with the bloom of the spring of life. The soft full lips were tumed up in a dis armmg smile The eyes were dark and rogulsh lt was by her eyes that I recognized grandma Rosemary Dieter AS I walked along the sound of ram drops pattenng against an old gar bage can came to my already atten tive ears The bleakness of the night spurred on by the ghostly rumble of the El overhead sent cold shivers up and down my spine I qu1ckened my pace as the ram fell more rapidly striking the sldewalk like a great mul tltude of marching feet The wet ghstemng pavement could scarcely be seen through the steady downpour In the distance could be heard the low pitched moaning of a fog horn Meanwhile the dark gloomy mist was getting thicker about me like a dark storm cloud enveloping a stray gull Charles Carter 6 saw' 7 mugged HERE FROM my place on the wall, I peer down at the people day after day, ticking away the seconds, min- utes and hours of their lives, day by day, month by month, year by year. Always the rhythmic tick-tock, tick- tock going on and on and on. People sometimes look at me m disgust others in fright and still oth ers gaze at me with joy Manys the t1me I have been hated and scomed urged to hurry on and many are the times I have been thanked for my kindness Generation after generation my l1fe has gone on people have been born have lived and died but still my never ceasing life ticks on and on and on Rose O Rourke THE MOON was full and bnght Hun dreds of stars lummated the sky with their brilliance Looking to the right and then to the left I could see only sand Before me stretched the roaring ocean with the waves rlsmg and falling l1ke a kite m the wind I shivered I felt lonely and lost and yet wonderfully sick I was alone yes but all thls beauty a round me was mine The sky ocean and sand I picked up a handful of sand and let it ooze slowly through my fingers A smlle came to my lips and linger ed I wanted to live once more Bernice Pottok AS THE emblem of freedom slowly hoisted itself nearer and nearer to the ever beammg gates of heaven heart rending feelrng could be sensed about the banners glowmg light that led many a gallant man onward to victory Manlyn Merz 26 I - . .
