STAR DUST I FOUND it, discarded and forgotten, while rummaging through grandfath- er's trunk. It was a faded tintype of a lovely girl. The raven tresses were imprisoned in a high, shiny pompa- dour and the cheeks painted only with the bloom of the spring of life. The soft full lips were tumed up in a dis armmg smile The eyes were dark and rogulsh lt was by her eyes that I recognized grandma Rosemary Dieter AS I walked along the sound of ram drops pattenng against an old gar bage can came to my already atten tive ears The bleakness of the night spurred on by the ghostly rumble of the El overhead sent cold shivers up and down my spine I qu1ckened my pace as the ram fell more rapidly striking the sldewalk like a great mul tltude of marching feet The wet ghstemng pavement could scarcely be seen through the steady downpour In the distance could be heard the low pitched moaning of a fog horn Meanwhile the dark gloomy mist was getting thicker about me like a dark storm cloud enveloping a stray gull Charles Carter 6 saw' 7 mugged HERE FROM my place on the wall, I peer down at the people day after day, ticking away the seconds, min- utes and hours of their lives, day by day, month by month, year by year. Always the rhythmic tick-tock, tick- tock going on and on and on.
