DOWN ON our comer, there is a triangle consisting of some warped park benches. In the center stands a flag pole, weary of being in the tor- turing sun and shivering cold. lf those benches could talk they would tell you about the gang at the cor- ner. But, since they can't talk, I will e you It is the fellows story I will e First come Ioe He was always teased because of his height He wa about five feet and this compared with the other fellows was short He was a happy go lucky fellow though witnout a care in the world and was always smiling Then theres Warren A swell guy red headed at that He used to use his car Just to go down to the comer to mail a letter Next to Danny He was a riot' Alway wantlng to pitch pennies A tall lanky guy was he In about four strides he could almost circle the whole place Then comes Wally and Bob always willing to beat Danny at pitching pen nies I think Ierry is last He used to sport a gray and blue Buick and how he used to waste gas taking the whole crowd Joy ridmg This happy gang used to go lnto the candy store and Just sit for a couple of hours Im not saying they would spend money no they would just sit and drive Al the owner crazy Sometimes they would amble down to the Italian restaurant and waste a couple of hours playmg card on the tables while waiting to b served Oh how the proprietor used to love them Another hobby of theirs was to go down to the comer Itch and say fall six of theml to the usher Uh we have to look for somebody do you mnd'7 The unsuspecting usher looking up at Danny says 15 Why no, that's okay, go ahead. They would prance in and seat them- selves in the last row and enjoy the movie. It wasn't that they wouldn't pay the admission price, but after all, if a picture is crummy they didn't want to pay 35 cents to see it. or, if they saw the picture before why waste money to see it again? That all happened a long tlme ago Since then came the war and all the fellows went Warren Bob and Wally went into the Army and Danny 1nto the Marine Ioe being too short for any branch of the service stayed home and kept up the other s morale The little crowd was quickly spread all around the globe Wally and Ierry to India Warren to France Bob to Alabama and Danny to Saipan They kept in contact with eaci other telling each how they would do all the things they dxd before the war But tragedy struck the gang when Warren died in France They all felt very bad and were recover ng from that shock when they found out that Danny was killed on Iwo lima Ierry wrote recently Well the old gang IS all broken up now Well never be able to go back to the corner again No Ierry the old gang wont b back but there will be a new gang there and they will do all the things you used to do because thats what Warren and Danny died for S 'Qi HIE? 6 1 f? is--9' IIVHEIIH HONVHTH UMW I, M .W : - I I .-. ... . . . ,.. ,.. .- ..- .. . .
