ETIIAYAL It IIN Ill Ill llli 9 E C Ox 2 QW X ..' .ff 5 uv'-' x Skt X IOHN STEIGER xxxx ft? S X XX SLOWLY AND painfully, lim Casey, right halfback for the Central High eleven, picked himself up. Stopped every time, he thought to himself, not a single play has clicked yet. Only three minutes remained for the half. If only they could hold that ball. Quickly, he filled up his position in the huddle, just in time to hear Artie Mackey, the quarterback of the team, say, Come on, fellows, we'll try Number 6. That's your play, he said to Ben Fuller, the big, brawny full- back. Put it over that 45 yard line for our first down Ill try answered Ben They lined up Then Art called the numbers swiftly 23 24 25 38 26 and the numbers rang out clear and true The ball snapped nght back into Fullers hands He gathered t m and started for the openmg made between guard and tackled for him He hit the openmg square in the middle yet there seemed to be some force hold mg him back He felt himself sinking slowly to the ground Then he used every ounce of strength and gave one more mighty heave As if hit by a solid bnck wall he fell to the ground There they were right in the m1d dle of nowhere What were they go ing to do? Only a couple of minutes to go to the half said Evans the lightning right end Its their down on our 45 yard line he added Do you thmk we can hold them until the whistle? asked Mackey As if by some magical touch they all shouted yes at once They quickly regamed their footing and walked to their positions The first play was around end but the ball carner was thrown for a three yard loss by Ioe Evans the right end The second went threw center for six yards. Then the whistle blew and the half was over. At the end of the half on their own 45 yard line. They slowly trotted to the dress- ing room. Once in the dressing room, Grimes, the coach. said, Well, fellows, what's wrong? We don't know, answered Fuller. Do you, coach? asked Evans. Yes, I think I do, answered Grimes. But I'm not going to tell you. I think I'll leave that up to Shaw, our center, to explain I've been doing a little checking up and I thmk he could explain 1t better than I Maybe he doesnt care to talk I dont know what you are talking about he stammered Perhaps I can refresh your mem ory said Grimes It all happened about three weeks ago when you went out of bounds when you werent supposed to What actually happened I dont know but maybe you had better tell us All right said Shaw still showing a little of his fright It happened 1ust l1ke coach said I went out of bounds one night Thought I needed a little fun a different kind of l1fe than I was leading here lust all studies backaches from football remarks from my teachers no fun at all I went to one of the nightclubs ui town and got myself into a ruce gamblmg debt of S150 Iust a few days before this big game today with Van Courtland High the nightclub manager told me to have the money by game time or else I didnt know what to do It must have been all planned Because the captam of the Van Courtland team came over to me yesterday when I was m town and asked if I wanted to repay that S150 debt I owed to the nightclub All I had to , ,, . . .
