PEACE EN EARTH ANDREW SARR S AS our late and 1llustr1ous P1651 dent Franklm D Roosevelt once so aptly put 1t There IS a curlous cycle 1n world h1story To some generatlons much 1S g1ven from others much IS excepted T1me has proven that from our gen eratlon much was excepted much has been g1ven and much more IS de manded Our generat1on had to r1se and solve the problems that arose from the economlc pol1t1cal and socxal chaos of the twentles and th1rt1es It has been called upon to destroy the ruthless tyrants that sought to enslave the human sp1r1t It IS now bemg asked to rebu1ld from the charred ru1ns of th1s ternble war a new world possessed of the falth to seek to attam mans dreams for centunes past permanent world peace and secur1ty As great a problem as was the wmnmg of the war lt IS not nearly so great as w1ll be the problem of wmnmg the peace Our greatest task w1ll not end but w1ll begm after the w1nn1ng of the war It w1ll be up to us to tackle the endless problems d1sputes and grxevances of the world and settle them so that the founda tlons of peace may be safely la1d Th1s huge task w1ll requlre patlence good falth and courage courage to mamtam our 1deals good fa1th to trust our fellow men and pat1ence because no undertakmg as huge as th1s can succeed 1mmed1ately In the days ahead there w1ll be many volces dxscouragmg vozces sneermg volces doubtful volces voxces that w1ll be a hmdrance to the realxzatlon of a lastmg peace There w1ll be the perfect1on1sts people who w1ll not be sat1sf1ed w1th any peace plan 1f 1t does not sat1sfy the1r 1dea of perfectlon There w1ll be the cyn1cs who w1ll pomt out that men can never keep falth w1th each other when the1r mterests are at stake Both the cyn1c and the perfectmomst w1ll have ev1dence to support the1r pomts of v1ew but both of them are too ex treme rn the1r pomts of v1ew to be of serv1ce to mank1nd Thus we must f1nd a happy me d1um between the cynlcal att1tude and the perfect1on1st attltude for our selves We must stand for our prm clples and 1deals but we must reallze that other natlons m a less fortunate posxtlon cannot completely ma1ntam our prmc1ples and therefore we should not attempt to force all our 1deals upon them We must have fa1th m our fr1ends and alhes but we must never become gull1ble e must compromlse but we must never agam appease Lastmg peace IS not a glfl It IS a purchase In order to buy 1t we must assume the respons1b1l1ty of bemg ever Vlglldlll of seekmg to allevlate suffenng anywhere 1n the world and of protectmg our 1deals wherever and whenever they are threatened That w1ll be our Job the h1gh school stu dents of today the cltxzens of tomor row As lh1S respons1b1l1ty of ma1n ta1nmg the peace w1ll fall on our houlders we must prepare for 1t 1n every way posslble We must con 111t1on ourselves to the fact that we are l1vmg m cruclal tlmes tunes that w1ll determme the future course of centurxes to come Thus we must equrp ourselves w1th all the knowl edge and sktlls that are wlthm our reach We must not slacken our efforts now as the war nears 1ts end feelmg that those who have fought and won the war l1ave done the blg 8 E - - - -Q 1 1 1 8 1' . 1 U7 H- u 1 . 1 ' ' I O . 1 1 .
