MA1TERS of national polrcy have been the subject of heated debate 1n recent months Abuse has replaced argument and name call1ng has played a nromment part The spec tacle has been nelther ed1fy1ng nor encouragxng to any of us Upon our young people the effect has been most unfortunate They see the les sons of the school contradicted by abundant examples 1n actual lrfe and the weaker of these young folks are nnpelled to fall 111 Wllh the all too common fash1on Such Yleldlng offers mocracy in our land A cornerstone of the democratic structure that shelters us and makes posslble the l1bert1es we enjoy IS full and free cl1scuss1on 1n an atmosphere of mutual espect The questionmg of mot1ves 1n the absence of evidence and the resort to personal abuse or to purely emot1onal appeal instead f rational argument are poor substi tutes for uch dlscussion The fa1rest measure of the success of our educa tion in the ways of democracy IS the respect we show for the rlghts f others and the considered judgment we accord their views honestly set forth Many centuries ago a very w1se man proposed a formula to govern an other SOC19lY that we might well adopt as a policy for all Amencans Th1s IS that we show ln essentials un1ty in non essentials l1berty and 1n all thlngs charity He dld not have 1n m1nd the narrower mean1ng often g1ven the word chcmty m our tlmes but the true sp1r1t of brotherhood of frlendshlp of mutual regard As there are matters upon which there can be no chfferences of loyalty among Amer 1cans so are there other questlons of ences may well exlst Let us hope that our latest group of graduates w1ll show themselves 1m bued with the Splfll of the formula here poposed May they yield t none 1n devotlon to the fundamentals of our democracy may they accord to others the same freedom they themselves have to dlffer 1n matters of detall and may they never fall ln the courtesy and mutual regard that should at all tlmes preva1l among those pr1v1leged to mherit our demo cr tic system Sincerely yours WILLIAM A CLARKE Principal scant hope of a secure future for de- policy upon which legitimate differ- ' I ' r .
