longer and suffer longer. He knew that the will to live is not a matter of reason. The man was starying and his arms instinctively reached out to encircle the gulls sleek body It hoyered aboye him so infuriatingly near yet so im possibly distant It came quite close to him and he thought he saw in its eyes a look of desire and fear Then it was gone He watched it circle out to the sea again out of sight of land its beady eyes downturned to the dark stormy water It was gone but he knew it would return It was gone but not forgotten by the man He thought of it as he chew ed with exhausted care on a re duced fraction of sea biscuit which w as his days allottment He made the biscuit last very long and with red dened eyes watched for the gulls return He was certain the gull would re turn for somewhere somewhere on this desolate upcrop surrounded by mountainous seas the gull had nested He was almost certain of that and he determined to make a sayage search of the island It was not difficult One hundred and fifty feet in one direction and about forty Bye in the other During 111 day and all night colossal combers be1t upon the shore oyerwhelming fume 'Ihc island was only rock There yy IS no yegetation no shelter There was barely more than a foothold on this steep up-cropping of wet slippery stone which constituted the land. There was no soil. There was only the nssured rock. The mans eyes blinked and his lips quivered at the growing reilizltion that the island might or might not be on the charts If the island w ere charted ships would ayoid it as a danger to navigation The island was a mere speck in a waste of sea He had no real hope of rescue but the instinct to cling to life was too strong for mere reason to controvert His knees felt oddly exhausted as he climbed about the waye rounded mass which was the island but he resolutely mide the yourney His stalk ing brought no result for he did not see the gull He did not eyen catch 1 glimpse of it By this time he desired it with an emotion far past any yelrning man would ordinarily know The man stumbled back to his use less cache of shattered timbers and weathered cordage He returned to consume his meager allottment of sea biscuit and water He picked up a canyas bag which held the sea biscuits It was nearly empty though his daily rations were smill But is he lifted the bag some thing fell at his feet There was 1 portion of white powder sifted out spreading in the air liye biscuits yy ere missing At his fcet lry 1 sixth h llf chewed irregularly gnawed Thc c rnyas b ig was a good ten feet from where it had been The gull had been trying to fly aw av with it The mans helrt tried to stop Hc regirded the hole and the diminished number of biscuits with 1 stupehed horror Days of Iifc hid bccn stolen from him by thc thicyin skui gull 1114111111111 7 7 V , . , . . , I LY V lv 2 2 . , Y . 7 W 7 .
