Complaining about too much homework, One of the highlights of the year was the Senior Carnival presented by the class of '59, The mid- way is busy while in the background people are seen rushing to send Eaglegrams . Mean a Lot excitement about the queen's court, and re- ceiving tardy slips for talking too long in the hall are mingled with our studies, activities and friends. We do not stop to think that we are getting excited about a football con- test or about a big dateg we just get excited. This year we can boast about the largest number of Na- tional Merit finalists in the history of our school. Our four A.F.S. finalists are indica- tive of the outstanding juniors who will assume the A.F.S.'s leadership next year. The excellence of our students in academics We felt very proud and happy this year for our six National Merit Scholarship fmalistsg Sue Welber, Burke jackson, Jeanne Martin, Art ShaPi1'0, Tony Evans and Mary Anne Haines. Every person in our cheering section screamed and clapped enthusiastically as Mr. Rothermel crowned Eileen Schultz as our Football Queen. , ' t ,J To top off a perfect night Barb Helkie reigned One of the highlights in Adams musical year was over the Coronation Ball put on by the Adams Hi-Y. Tradition Runs Strong at Adams Traditions play a very important role in our life under the tower. In the Fall we came back to the Sho' Ya Round for the Frosh and the Back-to-School Assembly both of which are sponsored by the Student Coun- cil. The Honor Breakfast is given by the N.H.S. at the beginning of each semester to recognize the straight-A students of the previous semester. The Share Their Fare drive whose slogan this year was Adams for Peace met with better than usual success and will pay for two exchange students for next year. Our football season was high- lighted by the game with our old rival Cen- tral and the crowning of our Queen and her Court. Christmas season for us began, as always, with our Christmas Vesper Service and our beautiful candlelight processional. Freshmen and Sophomore classes had their parties while the Seniors attended the Mid-Year Prom. Basketball was of primary interest during the winter. We were filled with ex- citement as we watched the Riley game and wondered who the Queen would be. Adding a light note to our winter activities was Adams Eve. Warm spring days accompanied the long awaited Junior and Senior Proms, the ex- citement of the Little 500, and elections for offices for next year. Mary Jane Zellers exemplifies the advanced biology department by observing the lion cub from Poto- watomi Park Zoo. 12 Our Varied Adamsites were stimulated this year by our challenging curriculum. Our quest in our English courses was for the TRUTH, and we learned to examine our own ideas and principles critically under the expert gui- dance of our instructors. Hungering and thirsting for knowledge, inquisitive minds penetrated into the realms of foreign language. Latin, French, and Spanish were sometimes Greek to us - but we managed to gain better understand- ings of the people whose native tongue we were studying. Learning by doing, these Government stu- dents stage a mock political convention. Classes at Work In answer to Russia's challenge, we buck- led down to work and found ourselves thoroughly engrossed on the perplexing problems which confronted us in our math and science classes. Those of us who are preparing to take our places in the business and industrial worlds diligently strove to increase our knowledge on our commercial courses. To satisfy our aesthetic senses we com- pleted our school programs with the study of music, art, and dramatics. mi? WR l 91 Voici la France, exclaims Mr. Brady as one of French scholars look on. Students Study for the Future Speaking of the future, when Adams stu- dents return in the fall, a twenty-one room addition will be completed. Some of the many features of the new ad- dition include a biology laboratory, chem- istry and physics laboratory, and two business education rooms. The facilities will be grouped according to the subject taught. Included in the new addition will be the rooms for mathematics, foreign languages, driver's training, health, and social studies. One of the changes in the old part of fx 1 Artist at work. the building includes making room 105 into additional office space. CNow we will have to look to room 101 for TRUTH and Mr. Krider.Q Another change will be making 106 into part of the library with listening booths for language and music. Adams is fulfilling the needs of a growing community by preparing students for the future. At Adams, Progress is our most important product. Glee Club ushers Due to the earliness of the Christmas Vespers the Glee Club was faced with the problem of shorter practice hours, but as usual the performance was well done. As is traditional the Glee Club members, sing- ing Gloria in Excellsis Deo, proceeded through the darkened auditorium carrying flaslights resembling candles. The program opened with a Bach number and came to a close as the stage curtains opened revealing a beautiful stained glass window and the Prep Glee Club who joined the Senior Glee in Yuletide Season Club in singing familiar carols. Other activities of the Glee Club in- cluded the Back-to-School Assembly, North Central Chorus, All-City Spring Choral Fes- tival, the Easter Assembly, the Baccalau- reate and Commencement exercises, and a T.V. program. Travelling to Chi- cago's famous amusement park was the first activity of the Adams band this year, a combination of work and play. The com- plete band played for all home football games, performing at half-time, when the twirlers were always a popular attraction. Two pep-bands alternated at playing for most basketball games. The pep-bands also pepped-up the pep assemblies with their peppy music. This year the band also had the Fall Band-Orchestra Concert presented here at Adams. The critics are still raving! Although the back stage crew was small for the first play, it grew considerably for the back stage work for Our Hearts Were Young and Gay. The Drama Club featured competitive ticket contests under the ticket co-chairmen, Bill Williamson and Marshall Nelson. Our T own was an out- standing dramatic accomplishment for the Adams dramatists. The Junior Waltons is an organization with a sincere interest in conservation and activities of the outdoors. The activities of the club center on many outdoor projects. In the past the club members have taken part in building game shelters, planting protective plants for both soil and animals, planting trees, providing bird feeding sta- tions, reforestation, fishing, and preserving wild life. In the present year the club has provided woodduck nesting boxes, and they also placed bird feeders in Potowatami Park Row 1: R. Elliott, C. Litweiler, D. Manuwal, F. Kuemmerle, B. Allison, C. They were aided in their study by seeing Gail Levy's slides of Germany and by hearing Jan Robbe and Michele Engel speak of educa- tion in their countries. One of their service projects was selling craft objects made by the Logan School. Another was making tray favors for the Childrens Hospital. Any member is eligible for cadet teach- ing in the various grade schools. A speaker talked to the girls about cadet teaching. O 0 O Future Nurses of America are not only interested in nursing, but in medicine in general. In order to find out more about this ever-widening field, members participate in volunteer work at city hospitals, take trips to various medical centers in the area, and have speakers who tell them about the various phases of medicine. A member may receive an official F.N.A. pin after she has been in the club for one semester. Members are awarded their pins at an impressive pin- ning ceremony. This year Future Nurses is trying to set up a scholarship for a person going into the field of medicine. W P. Bezeredy, vice- pres.g Miss Wamplerg J. Dobecki, president. Booster Club gives spirit to Adams With a membership of 200, Booster Club did many things this year to raise school spirit. One major project of the club was the for- mation of a cheer block. Girls in white blouses, dark skirts, and red and blue mit- tens cheered during basketball games and at the sectional tourney. Another major project of Booster Club was the selling of red Adams Derbies for the basketball games. Booster Club sponsored bus trips to Elk- hart, Michigan City, and Gary for the basketball and football games. Each year Central's and Adam's Booster Clubs plan arrangements for the Central- Adams football game. This year Central took charge of the bon-fire held in Pota- watami Park. Adams took charge of the dance, Eagle-Bear Romp, held in the Little Theatre. A queen and court were elected from each school. Seated: K. Korner, S. Shock, . Di k P . The 1958 John Adams football team compiled a 7-2 overall record and finished second in the conference for the second straight year. This is the fifth successive year under head coach john Murphy that the football team has been rated in the top ten teams of the state. Coach Murphy's coaching staff, which included Mr. Vincent Laurita, backfield coach, Mr. joseph Laiber, B-team coach, and Mr. Casimer Swartz and Mr. Morris Aronson, freshmen coaches, lead our teams through the season. Three regulars returned from last year's squad, and along with a host of B and freshmen team prospects, repre- sented our team through out the season. Although this year's record is not the best in the school's history, it is nothing to be frowned upon with the rugged schedule the squad played from week to week. The out- side running of Bob Hall and Ken Marvel, along with the up the middlel' power of Gene Phillips behind our fast forward wall was the reason for the Eagles' success. Kneeling: W. Nicks, R. BE T I HISTORY The John Adams' basketball team coached by Warren Seaborg experienced its most successful season in the history of the school. Led by seven returning lettermen the squad compiled an overall record of 17-6. South Bend certainly is one of the most rugged regions in the state as far as basket- ball is concerned, which is verified by the fact that four of the Eagles' six losses were to city foes. Next yea1 s squad will certainly miss the many great performers of this year's teamg however, the Eagles of the 1959-1960 season should again be one of the powers of the area with letterman Lee McKnight return- ing and the boys from the B team which compiled a record of 18-2 for the season. Several promising freshmen players are being counted upon to help next year's team. We hope these important factors will adequately counterbalance the graduation of Neil Bradley, Ben Endres, Ken Marvel, Gene Phillips, jim Rea, Tom Townsend, and Gary Wallman. nBn Team Stricklen, H. The swimming team's two losses were against city foes Central and Riley, and they finished third in the conference behind these two city schools. Through graduation the team will lose Jim Fett, Tony Kowals, Ward Harlan, Jim Hartke, Terry Gerber, Roger Philps, and Dan Reynolds, all monogram winners. The nucleus of next year's squad will be made up of co-captains Tom Brandley and Bill 48 W. Harlan, D. Reynolds, T. Kowals, J. Hartke, T. IN CCNFERENCE Hammas, Randy Welch, Jim Busse, and Don Hartke. The team took a third in the sectionals while qualify- ing four boys for the regionals. Coach Morris Aronson feels that the squad turned in a fair job this year, and believes that the outlook for next year is a pretty good one. One of the reasons is the return of such standouts as Tom Maggart, Marvin Cogdel, Jerry Minkow, and Don Karczewski, who are all lettermen from previous seasons. The captain this year was Phil Barton 49 who turns the captainship over to Marvin Cogdel and Torn Maggart for the 1959- 1960 season. DIAMOND MEN HOPE FOR GOOD SEASON Baseball The 1959 baseball team, under the coach- ing of Casimer Swartz, is looking forward to a tough but prosperous season. The Adams nine will play a seventeen game .schedule which includes eight ENIHSC games. However, having ten lettermen, headed by Captain Brad Eichorst, returning from the 1958 squad that won 12 ball games, lost 5, and tied 1, the Eagles expect to have an extremely successful season. Realizing, however, that this means that every opponent will be out to beat them in the coming sea- son, they have been hard at work so that they will be prepared to meet the challenge of their opponents. ff Captain Eichorst and Coach Swartz discuss facts about an upcoming game. With about forty-five boys trying out for varsity track the coaches have ample ma- terial to choose from for the various events. Many of these boys gained experience by participating on last year's squad and by running on the cross country team. Taking these facts into consideration we look for a good season by the Adams track team. Coach Kaeppler FUTURE BRIGHT FCR GOLFER The golf team, coached by Ernest Kaep- pler, will probably be up against its tough- est task in recent years because of the fact that the team doesn't have a single return- ing letterman from last year's squad. How- ever, the fact that no seniors are on the squad does make for a promising future. Some of the more outstanding qualifiers on the team were freshman Dale Hjerpe, Soph- omore George Van Buskirkg and junior Kent Kaeppler. Several players gained ex- perience by participating in B team golf last year. This should aid Coach Kaeppler as the team prepares to face the following schedule: Apr. 8 Elkhart-Riley at Adams Apr. 14 Adams-Michigan City at Laporte Apr. 16 Adams at Mishawaka Apr. 21 Central at Central Apr. 23 Adams-Riley at Elkhart Apr. 30 Mishawaka at Adams May 5 Central at Adams May 8 Laporte Invitational at LaPorte May 15 Sectional Golf Tourney May 23 State Golf Tourney at Indianapolis ' . .Lf-L. . 1 Row 1: R. Class of '6l The sophomore year could be called an in- between or changing year. The sophomore's life is miserable, yet happy . . . he is no longer excused for the mistakes he got away with as a freshman, but he still isn't given the responsibili- ties of a senior . . . he's lost the fearful and questioning look, but he still isn't able to hold his head as high as an upperclassman . . . only one more year of girls' gym . . . only two more years left to get a monogram sweater . . . in- stead of simply Autumn Antics the class dance will gain the distinction of being labeled a prom. Yes, even before he has realized it, his high school experiences are half gone. There are a few sophomores who secretly dream of their senior year, but in their wildest dreams they can't imagine the many seniors who would gladly trade places. Class of '62 Where's room 21? asked a new Fresh- man as he frantically searched for the chor- us room. This, locating the escalator, and locating the swimming pool on the third floor GJ faced 252 Freshmen as they entered Adams for the first time, even though they had been given a Show-Ya- Round tour. But the Freshmen soon entered into the Adams Spirit as they attended classes, foot- ball games, and parties. By the end of November their panic having disappeared they felt safe in calling their class dance Pilgrim's Panic. After learning the up's and down's of Adams they managed to hang onto the fast moving life under our tower. album f sr gf t F . lqz. .1 1 A A -fsf crgg-: s Q ,b X xx M.. 3 A K i fa! gs' ' , 3 Q MJ, --.FJ Y K 5' N Ak , ., , 'we , in Q, -, - X X . :-f ' S it E4 ff-Xi 'X mix . h v - X nl s 5 . 5815 QQ?
