AMUNDSON, KAREN , 0 c D 1 , A . . . SENIURS The Senior Class of 1958 embarked upon their last year at Johnson with a whirlwind of activities. Sharon Linn, like many other Seniors, found that in addition to getting used to their regular class work again there were many football games and club initiation parties to attend. During October the embryo academicians in the class pitted their intellects against their counterparts across the country during the National Merit Scholarship Test. Homecoming festivities, assemblies, and more football games rounded out the slate for October. Strolling and rock'n'rolling was the keynote at the numerous Basketball dances held during November and December. The last big event of the year was the Cheerleaders' Snowflakes in Pink Dance. The sparkling new year brought many club parties, the riotous Hobo dance, and the informative Senior interviews. Embarrassing Cupidgrams, the Sweetheart Swing, and the premiere of the J.S. Play The Fighting Littles was highlighted in February. Looking ahead, the class ordered announcements and were measured for their caps and gowns. ln March, Ray Kramer and many other Seniors were hard at work learning chemical formulas, Shakespearian quotations and the psy- chological functions of our complex lives. The Band and Choir Con- certs, the Operetta and the fun-filled Playday were spotlighted in Spring. The Yearbook and Graduation exercises brought the year to a close. All in all the class can look back on a year that was both NDSON RON I ANDERSON VICKI L. ANDERSON, BARBARA E. Salient subjects, singing groups and dra- matic clubs now become available as new horizons opened to the second year under- graduates. Early in '57 the Junior Class pitched in with gusto to make Homecoming a gaily decorated and successful affair, thanks to Barb Johnson, Pat Ireland and their committee. A squad football drew from the ranks such gridiron greats as George Fibison, Curtis lPorkyl Wahlberg and Dave Peterson who showed their prowess on the athletic field. The Holiday Season was ushered in with a panoramic view of Biblical and homey scenes .. In January Kathy lsacksen and fifty others received their class rings and were enviously viewed by the rest who were still waiting. Along with mid winter winds and Hockey Sea- son came the Scholastic Aptitude Test. All the year of schooling seemed in vain when they were faced with these professional brain- teasers. Homecoming, Sweetheart Swing, Hobo Dance or Invite, nothing is as important to the Juniors as the Prom. Weeks and months of planning and hard work were climaxed with one night of breathless excitement. Junior Representatives Greg Brindley, Sharon Wold Janet Prucell, Carol Tensing, Marilyn Nelson Mar Lou Zeiloth, and Tony Bennett spend many hour working an Prom plans. ROW lf B. ..-1' xv Y wa. The spell of the day could not be broken and the final score was 13-13. lt had been drizzling all day and the field and benches were wet when Sue Schroeder sat down to cheer the team as they met the Green Wave of Monroe. The soft, muddy turf did not stop the Governors from having a spectacular third quarter as they went on to win 12-6. With all the ioyous violence of kittens ploy- ing with a ball of string the team attacked the Washington Prexies and unraveled them 33-7. Although the day was sunny, the faces of the fans were cloudy as the Pilots dealt the boys their first loss. The forward phalanx of Murray backed by a clan of swift running backs proved too much for the Governors and they tell 39-6. Amid the pageontry of Homecoming, the Governors conquered the Knights of Harding 2O'12. Before a crowd of 3500 spectators the boys played one of their best games of the season and even a last minute touchdown by Harding made little difference in the final out- come. In a close, hard fought game the team scalped the Redmen of Wilson by 20-13 to add another victory to their record, ln the last tilt of the season, Mechanic Arts gave our team the coup de grace by defeating them 21-14. The concluding standings showed the Gover- nors in third place which attests their prowess an the gridiron. We were also honored when Dennis Prohofsky and Jim Cocchiarella were chosen on the All-City team. 5 'A Q K , as M -'vii 'pq R214 4 . Skudlark, D. Soderquist, N. DeMike, G, Marien, J. Baldwin. Tears mingled with confetti, and mass hysteria broke out when the final gun sounded. The finger of fate had turned, and mighty Johnson, the invincible Governors had been edged from their pre-destined niche of glory. ln iust a few short minutes, our dreams of the State Championship were shattered along with the twenty game winning streak, but one defeat could not rob this magnificent team of the praise and glory that they deserve. The spectacular sextet had compiled one of the flashiest records in high school hockey history, and our brilliant punch line was rated the best in the state. In twenty-one games, we succeeded in scoring l 18 goals while the slippery puck glided past our All City Goalie, Tom Martinson, only 17 times. All but eight of the games were shutouts. Added proof of the team's success is the fact that out of our starting six, five were chosen for the All City dream team. Prospects again look good for next year, with the B Team champs taking over where this year's squad left off. THE FIGHTING LITTLES The Fighting Littles, a family situation comedy was presented on the nights of February 27th and 28th. Under the direction of Miss A. Marguerite Anderson, this delightful play took place in the home of the Little family. Goody Little was a teen-age girl whose father found all of his daughter's friends young hood- lums and Ham Ellers the worst of the lot. Mr. Little had his own candidate for his daughter's affections, a young businessman, Norman Peel. In desperation Goody tried to please her father. This had amazing results and only confused everyone including Henriette, Goody's charming room-mate from the South who came to stay with the family. When she arrived, the plot Whatever has happened to poor little Filmer? - Barbara Larson, Marvin Lang, Karen Klune, Bruce Vento, and James Wilhelmy thickened as she devoted all her attentions to the men. Then there was Filmer, whose inner urge to be a hero only got him into trouble continually. He had his own love problems, yet if you mentioned the word love to him, he would tell you all that stuff was silly. This was before Antoinette had started to work on him. Through three acts the quick-tempered Little's squab- bled their way through differences in view point and ridiculous situations. Only when the battle was over did they discover they really did understand each other and were a united family. The play, based on a novel by Booth Tarkington, proved to be popular with J.H.S. firstnighters. You don't think l'm too dumb to see you're different from the other boys - Barbara Anderson and Marvin Lang SWEETHEARTS . . . This entertaining operetta, Sweethearts, was brought to life by a talented group of A Choir stu- dents directed by Mr. Johnson. The story could well be called The Search for the Lost Princess of Zalania. The plot in brief was mainly about the lost princess, Sylvia, lSylvia Wentworthl who was the adopted daughter of Dame Paula, lJudy Mclellanl the mother of six charming girls. Franz, the Crown Prince, lChuck Edwardsl was in love with Sylvia, but she remained true to her fiance Karl lDave Franzmeierl until she discovered he had been flirting with Liane lKaren Amundsonl, a seam- stress in Dame Paula's laundry. Meanwhile, Mikel lJon Roederl, who has been pos- ing as Dame Paula's long lost husband, reveals that Sylvia is really the lost princess and the throne of Zalania is hers. She announces that she will wed Franz and they will rule together. Mr. Neihart's and Mrs. McKinney's crews were re- sponsible for the beautiful stage work. Mrs. Sheff was in charge of choreography. Karen Amundson, Dave Franzmeier, and Jon Roe- der discuss the affair of an erupted kingdom. Judy McLellan instructs her daugh- ters in the art ot washing clothes. -L i 5 4x 7-'asf Sw 5. q v ,ge so .- A 'X' M .' -. ff 1122, 11 if 4 x 3wmWWw?Qf fi' Q l?W g14 E X X W? 2 335 - ble Q W r If B J in 21:2 , - 1 V I . The fall season displayed the rhythmic talents of the JHS bandsmen at football games, the Payne Avenue Harvest Festival Parade, neighbor- hood activities and school pep assemblies. The uniform drive was successfully started at the festive Chow Mein Dinner and candy sale. The gala winter scene found musical mania at many hockey games. The maroon clad minstrels marched to the tune of the Saints Come Marching ln as they stepped through the Winter Carnival Parade and festivities. The birds were crowded as the musical madcaps swung into their annual Spring Concert decked in their new uniforms.
