Varsity Soccer The fast and agile Varsity Soccer Team finished with a record of five wins, five losses, and one tie for the season. Despite the poor weather conditions this fall, the team display- ed great spirit, as well as the deter- mination to win. Coach Roland Au- gustine had this to say about the team, There was a vast improvement over last year's team due to the fact that we had many returning players. Over- all, we worked diligently, establish- ing a disciplined team with a greater passing and trapping ability. The fullback's defensive barrier provided the team with exceptional strength. Yet all the team members should be congratulated for a well played season. back: Coach R. Augustine, J. Schell, T. Quillen, C. McDonough, T. Ryan, B. Robertson, J. Augustine, M. Conti, J. Charmello. Soccer This year under the supervision of Andy Mastronardi, JV Soccer scored a fantastic record of six wins, two ties, and no losses. When asked about the team. Coach Mastronardi said: I feel that the JV Soccer team had good spirit, and good players who got along well. The defense was the team's strongest point, and I would say that if there v as a UCAL title for JV Soccer, Coleman would def- initely have taken it. This year's team had an excellent line up, yet the most outstanding players were Art Anderson (fullback) Willy Cannon (halfback), Bill Cote (fullback), and Dave Charm el lo (goalie). However, all the members of the team should be congratulated for a job well done. Cross Country The John A. Coleman Cross Country team repeated as champions of Di- vison 1 with a 5-0 record. This marked the fourth consecutive sea- son that the Statesmen were undefeat- ed in dual meet competition. The fourth place finish in the UCAL championship meet at Ashokan, com- bined with the results of the dual meets, tied Coleman with Rcdhook for third place in the overall league standings. Armand Benincasa, Jim Farrell, Damien Prendergast, and Elaine Can- non were medal winners. While Bet- ty Ann Jerkowski won the Girls' Race. All in all the Cross Country team had a great season. back row: J.Craven, J. Schoonmaker, P. McCormick, C. Price, Coach Ed Synan, J. Gibbons, T. Price, S. Soechting, S. Fiore, mgr. kneeling: M. The most outstanding players on the team were Catherine Blum, the cen- ter forward, who scored the most goals for the team; and Janet Knott, center halfback, who put up a good defense for the forward line. The goalie, Beth Hooker, played a good season with two shut-out games and numerous saves. back: Coach D. Getty, J. Weber, K. Bettendorf, P. Ryan, K. Bodenweber, C. Dent, C. Murphy, J. Knott, L. At the end of the season the season the Varsity team finished with a record of 6-9. They placed sixth out of 10 in their league. The teams outstanding players were Catherine Blum and Janet Knott. JV Cheerleaders Varsity Basketball The Coleman Varsity Basketball Team started its season with high hopes and a positive attitude. After a successful game against Redhook the next three games were a disap- pointment to the team and Coach Vincent Bitonte. The following three games displayed the teams good spirit and skillful performance. The Rondout game however, dampened the teams spirit. Coach Bitonte said the best games included the last half of the Highland game and all of the Fallsburg game. In conclusion Coach Bitonte siad: The overall team sea- son and effort coincided—we had our ups and our downs. The J.V. team is made up of consistent players who all get along well together. Team work and spirit are among the high qualities of the J.V's. The outlook for the fu- ture is promising. Throughout the season, the best all-around player was John En- gel. The two players v ith the most improved performance were Pete McCutcheon and Robert McDonough. Varsity Basketball Boasting a 13-1 record and first place in the National Division, last year's Girls Basketball Team earned the respect of its opponents in the UCAL. This year, that respect is still well deserved as four of last year's start- ing players have returned. Captain Janet Knott leads the experienced group at center, and share rebound- ing duties with Kathy Mahoney. Kathy Turck and Catherine Blum return as guards. In addition to these four, the other players on the team are very talented, and contribute greatly to firm a strong unit. At the time of the Yearbook interview. Di- rected by Miss Cicalc and KHS direc- tor Mr. Stccves, both choruses par- ticipated in the dedication of the YMCA's new gymnasium. Though pressured by limited time, a well planned and highly popularized Christmas concert was assembled un- der the title CHRISTMAS AROUND THE WORLD. On Dec. 19, the spirit of Christmas was enlightened by car- ols from Poland, Germany, the Alps, Canada, England, France, and America. A Spring concert entitled AMERICAN MUSIC was planned for May 22, which proved to be a moving experience. Chorus back: C. Salimone, M. Dittmar, C. McGowan, M. McGowan, $. Cote, E. Gorman, T. Price, D. There were many trips planned for Decem- ber through March. Some places that the club visited were Bellayrc, High- land, and Platteki 11. This year's ac- tivities included a three day trip to Mount Snow, Vermont. That was the highlight of the year for those that went. Ski Club membership was open to anyone who had the slightest interest in skiing. Brother Henry was the fac- ulty advisor, and was assisted by Brother Thomas, Mr. Safford, and Mrs. Marallo. Practicum is a Senior religion elective, under the direction of Br. Thomas. It is a service project for our community, which basically involves helping others. On three mornings each week throughout the school year, students went to several different places to volunteer their serv- ices. These included: St. Joseph's school, Benedictine hospital. Immaculate Con- ception, Children's Rehabilitation Cen- ter, the Assoc, for Retarded Children. C. Gelsleichter, J. Charmello, Bro. H. Sawicki. Practicum ss 8SS88838Sg38SSSgS3S803S8SS: 3S@333333333333333S3S3S330 For many years, the Key Club has been existing in Coleman High School. Yet many people still have no idea what the Key Club does. Under the supervision of Mr. Robert Carroll, the Key Club's main ob- jective is to help the community. As President Chuck McCullough puts it, The Key Club's main point is to make things happen in the commun- ity. Then, hopefully, positive things will react from our services. He also added, Key Club also tries to make its members better citizens. Other officers are Brian Gcrlack, Vice- President; Mary O'Connell, Secre- tary; Sue Dittmar, Treasurer. Officers: B. Each year a certain amount of money is sent to the Propogation of the Faith of the Archdiocese of New York. During the past year, we have been making a special effort to help support the work of the Re- demptorist Fathers at THE PEOPLE'S PLACE.” As in years before, every week in the mission collection the students have expressed great generosity through their donations. 57 Advisor; L. Elaine Cannon as Alice found herself asking this ques- tion quite often during the Childrens Theater production, “Alice in Woderland . This magical fantasy proved to be as wonderful as its name. Many children were delighted as Alice traveled through the land of make believe, talking to animals, going to mad Tea Parties , and playing a unique game of croquet with the Queen of Hearts and her court. What are the major factors in pro- ducing a successful play? The direc- tor, officers, and cast agree on two things: spirit and cooperation. Director Gerard Gretzinger was quo- ted as saying, The cooperation is just as good as any other year! The spirit of Childrens Theater every year is fantastic. At the beginning of the year, no one knows one another, but at the end of Childrens Theater we're all close friends. He also add- ed, Childrens Theater is the most beautiful thing that I've ever exper- ienced at Coleman. The feeling of friendship and love is enough in it- self to make it a success. When asked what he thought of this year's production. Producer Bernie Gray had this to say, I'm very op- timistic. It v i 11 be moving, and a good experience for not only the staff and cast, but also the school and aud- ience. I thank the cast, crew, and director for making my year as Pro- ducer enjoyable, and the experience of a lifetime. President of Childrens Theater, Car- mel lo Tornatore. had this to say of the production, f,The play is fantas- tic! We've received total coopera- tion! Alice in Wonderland v iII appeal to everyone. It has humor, color, groat music, and terrific choreography. This year's Childrens Theater of- ficers include, Carmel lo Tornatore, President; Judy Milne, Vice Presi- dent; Jean Kren, Secretary- Treasurer. With a wonderful cast and the fan- tastic officers, Childrens Theater has once again become an outstand- ing success. 60 61 3S3SS3333SS3833S88S33S83333S3S3SS3S33S3338833S383SSSS8S33SS8338S3S33333S3S83S3333S3338S3SSSS3S3383; Art Club under the guidance of Mr. Brundage mot once a week. FACULTY KICKBALL GAME Yes, the idea seemed a bit crazy and yes, people thought they were a bit crazy too, but more importantly yes, the Senior-Faculty kickbalI game was a success. A success in the true sense of the word. Those participating en- joyed it, even the faculty, who inciden- tally, LOST. The Seniors came out to show just what great spirit they have. The day began with a Mass, followed by coffee and donuts. The Seniors were outside first and anxiously awaited the faculty's arrival. Had they chickened out?!? They soon appeared dressed to play, with their mascot—a pet rock. Their coach, Sr. Alice, who looked quite stunning in her red stocking hat, led warm-ups on the field. The game was soon underway. The fac- ulty had many well-conceived plans, but when the Seniors united, their strat- egy was crushed. The faculty had also planned a halftime show but it was overcome by the roudy rallying Seniors. The final score v as: Seniors—285 Fac- ulty— 284.5 After the game McDonald's was bom- barded for lunch, following v hich, everyone headed for home and victory parties. 90 DECORATING THE BAKE SALE JUNKIE CHRISTMAS TREE On Sunday December 12th, many members of the Senior class gath- ered at school to decorate our Christ- mas Tree. The day began about noon. Mr. Voerg and most of the guys worked hard to get the tree in it's stand and up straight while the girls untangled and tested the many strings of lights (many of which blew up in their hands). The lights went on first. Once they were on we thought the worst was over. We didn't expect the tub of water that the tree was standing in to crack. Really now, v ould you?? Everything had to come down so wo could get a different tub and mop up the stage. We all formed two lines and braced ourselves so we could catch the tree when it came our way. It was very strange to see a Christmas Tree suspended in mid-aid with near- ly 30 pair of legs protruding from underneath it. Finally the tree was back in it's place. A few branches were broken and some lights had fallen out of place, BUT, it was standing again. The lights were adjusted and v e began to hang our wide variety of deco- rations. We had everything from bells, bottles (Michelob) to cartons (Heineken), along with candy canes, stockings, and tinsel. At last the masterpiece was com- pleted, even though a few of our choice decoration had disappeared. Even the lights worked! Nov it v as time to settle down to something of paramount importance and great nutritional value . . . PIZZA! After dinner v e blessed the Rolling Meadows area with our won- derful voices and musical talent. Our repitoire of carols included Jingle Bells, Silent Night, Joy to the World, We Wish You A Merry Christmas, and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. When v e had finished caroling, we returned to school for a mass followed by coffee and donuts. However, there v as one slight problem, when v e got back to school, only half of the tree would light. Maybe v e should just start ALL over again . . . ? As I look back, I shudder at the insane things I did. Yet I still ask myself the questions, Was that really me? or What strange mystique possessed me to do such things? True, I still gasp at the me that once v as, but now I can hold my head high. I've licked my problem .... I've kicked the habit. I v as a bake sale junkie. Yes, you laugh, but to me it v as a serious problem. I remember how it all started .... Coming to Coleman was very traumatic for me. Here I v as, fresh out of gram- mar school; a green kid starting out. I recall walking down the long corridors, wondering what Mom had packed for lunch. When I'd reach the lunchroom I'd hungrily open the brown paper bag and see what goodies I had gotten for the day. Soon, my excitement turned to boredom and disgust. A bologna sandv ich, carrot sticks and an apple. Yech! As I reluctantly bit into a carrot my eyes v andered around the cafeteria. Suddenly, something caught the corner of my eye. In a small, inconspicuous corner of the cafeteria stood a table lined with cakes, cookies, brownies, and other assorted goodies. Yes, I thought to myself, this v as my answer. I dug into my pocket and found three pennies, a quarter and a dime. I dropped my carrot stick and hurried to the haven for those in the last lunch period. At the table sat two girls, chatting dully about some math test. When they saw me their boredom turned to delight. Support your cheerleaders!! one cute pixie squealed, We have lots of deli- cious things! The choice was hard, but after some scrutiny I chose three chocolate chip -ookies, one cupcake, and half a brov lie (it had broken and was half price). I went back to my ta- ble, and sat down and began to devour the delicate morsels. Little v as I to know that this was only the beginning. Each lunch period I'd look around the cafeteria, hoping thst some worthwhile cause v as having a bake sale. Thank God for cheerleading and Yearbook. Yes, these organizations kept me going through Freshman year. Who v ould think that these two mild-mannered clubs kept my dollar habit satisfied. As I look back, I fondly remember the fun of choosing, and wondering which del- icacy was the best. I couldn't wait till Coleman's clubs ran out of money. When this occured, a bake sale v as soon to come. However, as Sophomore year approached I began to realize my problem. When the first bake sale came up my best friend said something that I was sup- posed to take as a hint. More money for bake sales? she asked, you already owe me five dollars from last year. You're too much! Even my sister said, Another bake sale? Don't you think enough is enough? Finally, I set my- self straight. I vowed that I would never touch one little morsel from the bake sale table again. My friends v ould watch me as I hurriedly passed a bake sale. They smiled and encouraged me greatly as I modestly repeated It was nothing. Soon, I had kicked the habit. Now as my little cluster of friends pass a bake sale I laugh heartily about choc- olate cupcakes, oatmeal cookies, and days gone by. As I think about how silly I v as in the past, my friends get on the lunch line. Yet, sometimes I have to bite my lip and hold my breath as I pass those delectable little goodies....... By Nancy Gagliardi THE HALLOWEEN HAPPENING On October 29th, the goblins and gouls of the Senior class broke loose during the first two periods of the day to cele- brate Halloween. Talent was discovered in some class members that no one ever realized existed. The event proved to be fun for those who participated. It was a break from the continuous monotony of a normal Friday schedule. The events and their winners are as follows: Musical Chairs— Jane Kuschner (H.R. 1) Apple-on-a-String— Joe Augustine (H.R. 16) Bubblegum Blowing Contest— Mike Kandl (H.R. 16) Marx Brothers Contest— Carlo Tornatore (H.R. T.R.) Brian O'Neil (H.R. T.R.) Paul O'Connor (H.R. T.R.) Tim Quilty (H.R. T.R.) The Seniors certainly appeared to be reliving their childhood memories this Halloween, as bubblegum snapped and feet raced to be first before the music stopped. Fun-loving faculty members also seemed to enjoy the nostalgia of it all....... COLEMAN'S 1976 GOLF SEASON The Coleman Golf team triumphed in the UCAL in the 1976 season. The statesman compiled a record of 14 v ins against 2 losses. Their difficulties arose only in matches against Ellenville and New Paltz. The team was led by Brian Croswell, Mike Murphy, Howard Shambo, Bryan Smith, Tom Palmer, and Jim Sumis- laski. Four of the six starters returned this year. The team's coach was Mr. Joe Mannello. It was his first year as coach, and proved to be a good one for him. SR.-FACULTY BASKETBALL On Wednesday December 1, The An- nual Senior-Faculty Lick 'Em Bas- ketball game was held in the Coleman gym. They tried awfully hard but it just didn't work out. The girls had a terrific team and no one could have been more ready and willing to play but somehow, every- thing went wrong. Maybe it was because they didn't realize that they were only going to play two quarters until the first was over. And although the competition could have been a factor, it was pre- determined that it v as not. With such great names as Kathy Turck, Pat Schat- zel, Mary Mahoney, and many, many more, all behind the fantastic coaching job of Janet Knott, you're winners, even if you lose. The faculty team was led by Marion Moose, Susan Swift, Onnie-AII-Star, Elizabeth Elusive, Cathorine-the-Great, Debby Daring, and Lucy Lightening. The final score v as; Faculty: 13, Sen- iors; 8. Starring scorers on the boys' team v ere: Mark Berardi, Shayne Gallo, Joe Char- mello, Damien Prendergast, Noel Sickler, and Bill Robertson, manager. The Faculty's starters included Mr. Synan, Mr. Voerg, Mr. Spada, Mr. Mastronardi, Mr. Bitonte, Mr. Sechol, and Mr. Safford. The game began with high prospects for a first v in in the Seniors' favor, but as the game wore on this probability re- duced constantly. The faculty triumphed with the final score of 61-55. Better luck to the Class of '78!! 93 We, the staff of Spirit '77 would like to express our appre- ciation to Mr. Coleman by dedicating our yearbook to him. We hope the Christian spirit to which he and the school are dedi- cated endures in our hearts forever. His generosity and concern have been felt by students, parents, faculty and we hope . . . the world. Although, few of us ever met Mr. Coleman, his presence has always been felt and we hope that it always will be. A brand new day IS c of you -3no dt Vmjvo —, w CvA • Vv. VA _C trvv _ VoaA : ja,In_.
