FERRIS HS Bowlers Victorious Studying hours and hours every day finally paid off for five Ferris students. Captain Eric Holdaway, Bill Bliss, Dave Tyron, Susan Kelley, and alternate Kevin Cubley joined the prestigious 1981-82 High School Bowl team. Under the supervision of Mr. Kent Varty, coaching his se- cond year, the studious team faithfully practiced three times a week. Mr. Varty commented that each team member specialized in one or two prominent areas, while Bill Bliss excell- ed in Science and American History, Susan Kelley, showed dominance in Literature, Dave Tyron knows his Science and Math, and Eric Holdaway is competent with U.S. History and World History. Mr. Varty felt that the team members showed potential to go far in competition but he jokingly added Nif the right questions are asked. Staters Bury Red Tape The American Legion selected five Ferris students as delegates for the 1981 summer session of Boys' and Girls' State. They were: Matt Girvin, Bill Pliss, Sue McGeorge, Barb Becker, Shannon Boyd, and Anne Roorda. Selected on the basis of past ac- complishments and leadership potential, the staters participated in a mock government. ln this mock government, they studied parliamentary procedure of l 2 3 local and state governmental systems. Held in Ellensburg, Washington, the students ran for various offices in their individual cities, as well as on a state wide level. The delegates attended lec- tures and rallied at campaign functions. 'lThe main idea stressed at the session was to respect and love your country. Patriotism was embedded deeper into everyone's heart at the end of the week, expressed Girls' stater Sue McGeorge. During the end of August, all of September and October, the Ferris Marching Band and Colorguard spent numerous hours after school marching to prepare to perform in halftime shows. ln the past, these groups practiced before school at 7:00 a.m., but to increase productivity they decided to start marching after school. Debbie Burkhart, the majorette and the Valkyrs, Ferris' Drill Team, also joined the band in putting on the football halftime.
