We, the Class of 1956, proudly present the Olympian to you, our wise readers who recognize the importance of education in order to preserve our spirit of democracy. Bearing in mind not only the words of Francis Bacon, but also of our own motto, we readily confess, Beyond Tomorrow Lies Success. PA. T. D. MITMAN Le I. MURRII IRVIBINI PRINCIPAL ulln' I HIGH IBHDDL IRIN June 12 , 1956 Dear Members of the Class of '56s The facult joins me in extending congratulations on your gradl uation from high school. It is an achievement worthy of note and one deserving of praise. On this happy occasion, I am certain, tha pride swells in the hearts of your loved ones. You have come to the crossroads of your lives. Before moving on ask yourselves a number of searching questions dealing with your interests, skills and abilities, and then seek the counsel of those whose experience will help you to chart a happy and a successful life. As Americans we are blessed with a degree of freedom and a measure of wealth unequaled in the history of mankind. Our heritag was kindled from the din and smoke of battle, enflamed and enriched through the heroic sacrifices of Americans living and dying through six generations of our glorified history, believing as they did in the dignity of man and his inalienable rights. It now becomes your sacred duty to defend that heritage when threatened and to pass it on to posterity unblemished. There will be a never ending challenge to test the strength of your convictions: to uphold that which is right and move against that which is wrong. To do otherwise will place you among those wha know neither the joy of triumph or the satisfaction of having tried and failed. No matter what the test or how great the task, face it with a will to succeed. Success will not come easily: public indifference and complacency will impede your advance, doubts and fears will lessen your enthusiasm, but by invoking God's aid and with a will- ingness to work long and hard, you will be blessed with many of l1fe's great rewards. Sincerely yours, Lawr e B. MDRRII IUFERVISINI PRINBIPAI. all III I-HBH IIIHDDL PIIN TO THE CLASS OF 1956 - GREETINGS AND CONGRATULATIGNS: Your twelve years of going to school is bringing its reward. Your diploma is the evidence of your success. It is yours for life and it will become increasingly cherished as the years pass. The Board of Education and the Administration are proud of you. You have been good pardners. In every new enterprise there is planning and building. Not everything wanted can be done during the first years. Make-shifts often have to be used and they are not always satisfying. Your understanding and loyal co-operation have been greatly appreciated. The Board of Education and the Administration are pledged to the task of providing the best possible school system for Jim Thorpe, This will take time and considerable doing. we ask that the class of 1956 keep a kindly eye on us and continue to lend us its interest and encouragement. r o.'m' T. On March 12 of this year Mr. Oscar Maehrer resigned as head basketball coach of the ,lim Thorpe Area Senior High School. Since Mr. Maehrer had served faithfully as an athletic coach for the past 21 years, his resignation was accepted with regret by the School Board. Mr. Maehrer, who was respected and admired by his many basketball players, always tried to instill in his team the impor- tance of good sportsmanship, whether in victory or in defeat. We are eertain that next year's basketball team will feel deeply the loss of their coach, Mr. Oscar Maehrer. As this book goes to press, our baseball team has not yet been chosen. We are looking forward to a successful season in tho Mountain League with Mr. Thomas Carr as our head base- ball eoaeh. This year, a football team was organized under Mr. Thomas Carr. For the first time in 23 years our school participated in this sport. Football was last played here in 1932 under Mr. Everett R. Hunter. Because of inexperience the team won only one game while losing Eve, but our boys showed great spirit and promise for future years. In November, Peter Wei'nett was chosen to represent us in the annual Panther Valley All Star game which was played in Lansford. The following boys will be lost to the squad through graduation this June: Donald Black, Rodger Horos, Marvin Hurley, Eugene Kissner and Peter Wernett.
