Girls’ Basketball A large boost to school spirit was contributed this year by the girls’ varsity basketball team. The team consisted of seniors: Debbi Wood and Connie Rinkes; juniors: Tami Jackson, Wendy Robinson, Donna Reeher, and Julie Rinkes; and freshmen: Dawn Smith, Lynda Adamson, Melissa Wilkin, and Joan Layman. Mr. Lonergan coached the girls again this year. The team played their regular season and finished first in their half of the league. Next, they went on to win 3rd place in District. The district games were played in Salem at North Salem High School. School was dismissed early on two days to let both students and teachers travel to Salem for the games and cheer the girls on. It should be noted that Coach Lonergan insisted at the beginning of the season that all the girls buy high-top tennis shoes to protect their ankles and cut down on accidents. This was a big help—only 5 of the 10 players hurt their ankles this year as opposed to the 7 out of 9 who sprained, twisted, or otherwise injured their ankles last year. Awarded with first team All-star recognition were Wendy Robinson and Tami Jackson. Awarded second team All-star were Connie Rinkes and Melissa Wilkin. The team members also voted on the school awards. Most Valuable player went to Wendy Robinson. The award for Most Improved player was shared this year by Donna Reeher and Connie Rinkes. Finally, the girls chose Melissa Wilkin as their Most Inspirational player. 22 Girls Basketball

Boys’ Basketball By nothing but coincidence the number of people on this year’s boy’s varsity basketball team per class fell chronologically into order. The team consisted of one senior: Pat Potts, two juniors: Dean Foster and Ward Vandehey, three sophomores: Tim Crawford, Doug Rodgers, and Neil Vandehey, and four freshmen: Paul Vandehey, Allen Hecker, James Reeher, and Daren Berg. Also joining the team at the end of the season was sophomore Andy Baumel. The team put forth all of their effort throughout the whole season. Although they did not have a large number of victories, they did have a very important one against Valsetz. This was the first Varsity victory over Valstez for many years; an encouraging way to close the season and to end Homecoming Week. The team voted Dean Foster Mr. Hustle and Defensive Player of the Year. Ward Vandehey and Daren Berg were voted co-Most Improved. Pat Potts was voted Most Inspirational and James Reeher was voted Most Valuable Player and was named to 2nd team all league in the 1-Tip it to a Bluejay, Jump Pat!” Pat Potts tips the ball, CASCO league. hopefully to teammate Dean Foster ( 21 white). 2-The Bluejay Basketball team from left to right Tim Crawford, Doug Rodgers, Daren Berg, Todd Johnson, Paul Vandehey, Pat Potts, James Reeher, Allen Hecker, Ward Vandehey, Neil Vandehey, and Dean Foster. 24 Boys’ Basketball
