Girls’ Basketball A large boost to school spirit was contributed this year by the girls’ varsity basketball team. The team consisted of seniors: Debbi Wood and Connie Rinkes; juniors: Tami Jackson, Wendy Robinson, Donna Reeher, and Julie Rinkes; and freshmen: Dawn Smith, Lynda Adamson, Melissa Wilkin, and Joan Layman. Mr. Lonergan coached the girls again this year. The team played their regular season and finished first in their half of the league. Next, they went on to win 3rd place in District. The district games were played in Salem at North Salem High School. School was dismissed early on two days to let both students and teachers travel to Salem for the games and cheer the girls on. It should be noted that Coach Lonergan insisted at the beginning of the season that all the girls buy high-top tennis shoes to protect their ankles and cut down on accidents. This was a big help—only 5 of the 10 players hurt their ankles this year as opposed to the 7 out of 9 who sprained, twisted, or otherwise injured their ankles last year. Awarded with first team All-star recognition were Wendy Robinson and Tami Jackson. Awarded second team All-star were Connie Rinkes and Melissa Wilkin. The team members also voted on the school awards. Most Valuable player went to Wendy Robinson. The award for Most Improved player was shared this year by Donna Reeher and Connie Rinkes. Finally, the girls chose Melissa Wilkin as their Most Inspirational player. 22 Girls Basketball

Kneeling: Julie Rinkes, Dawn Smith, and Cheryl Hammerberg. This year’s volleyball team consisted of eight girls, one coach- Miss Alice Crino, and a score keeper-manager- Brenda Morgan. Of the eight girls six were returning lettermen. Seniors Marcy Layman, Connie Rinkes, and Debbi Wood, Juniors Donna Reeher and Julie Rinkes, and Sophomore Margie Potts. New to the team were Junior Cheryl Hammerberg and Freshman Dawn Smith. The season began with a tournament at Clackamas Community College, with other teams from both halves of the Casco B league. The girls played hard and improved greatly throughout the year. Although they didn’t have a winning season, the year was one of victory. Victory in that they - successfully defeated Catlin Gable one game out ot three, a feat that has not been accomplished for at least three years. Also, victory in getting back home after the games. Taking the school van to the games never failed to be an adventure, as the van would overheat coming home over the mountain every time. At the close of the season, team members voted Dawn Smith Most Improved, Debbi Wood Most Inspirational, and Marcy Layman Most Valuable. Volleyball 21
