Cross Country After 10 years, the competition of Cross Country has finally returned to Jewell High School. Because this was the first year of cross country in so long, the year was conducted as an experiement to see if the sport would get any participation. The team consisted of only two runners, James Reeher and Ward Vandehey. To even things out, there were also two coaches, Jim Wilkin and Tom Lonergan. Also a part of the team was Dean Foster, who insisted on being Ward’s agent. The team was soon recognized by local truck drivers and others returning from work, as part of the scenery on their 2.6 mile run 3 days a week and 6 mile run 2 days a week. Although they ran against a varity of teams, including Vernonia, Catlin Gable, Portland Christian, NCC, and Watonka, James and Ward only ran in four meets. re Christmas Dance “Christmas Reflection” was the theme for this year’s Christmas season dance. The dance was held in one portion of the new multi-purpose room. There were many Christmasy decorations which included 4 large trees, many, many stars falling from the ceiling, a lot of glitter and 5 princesses and princes (one couple soon to be King and Queen), mixing nicely with all the decorations. The court included 7th 8th princess Brenda Morgan and prince Bobby Robinson, 9th Susan Hunter and Dante Dante’ Hill, 10th Tina Robinson and Neil Vandehey, 11th Donna Reeher and Dean Foster, 12th Marcy Layman and Scott Frazier Above- After hours of preparation, Christmas Reflections at . Volleyball 1-A topsy-turvy season ends with the coach being turned topsy-turvy by her wild and wacky team. 2-Debbie Wood with dot sets the volleyball to Cheryl Hammerberg who’s standing ready with dash as Coach Crino helps from the bench. 3-Jewell High School's Volleyball team standing left to right: manager Brenda Morgan, Donna Reeher, Margie Potts, Marcy Layman, Debbie Wood, Connie Rinkes, and coach Alice Crino. Kneeling: Julie Rinkes, Dawn Smith, and Cheryl Hammerberg. This year’s volleyball team consisted of eight girls, one coach- Miss Alice Crino, and a score keeper-manager- Brenda Morgan. Of the eight girls six were returning lettermen. Seniors Marcy Layman, Connie Rinkes, and Debbi Wood, Juniors Donna Reeher and Julie Rinkes, and Sophomore Margie Potts. New to the team were Junior Cheryl Hammerberg and Freshman Dawn Smith. The season began with a tournament at Clackamas Community College, with other teams from both halves of the Casco B league. The girls played hard and improved greatly throughout the year. Although they didn’t have a winning season, the year was one of victory. Victory in that they - successfully defeated Catlin Gable one game out ot three, a feat that has not been accomplished for at least three years. Also, victory in getting back home after the games. Taking the school van to the games never failed to be an adventure, as the van would overheat coming home over the mountain every time. At the close of the season, team members voted Dawn Smith Most Improved, Debbi Wood Most Inspirational, and Marcy Layman Most Valuable. Volleyball 21
