It is with great pleasure that we, the Jewell High Student Body, dedicate this annual to Merle Tiedeman. Merle Brink Tiedeman was born on September 23, 1895 in Doland, South Dakota. He is the son of George and Lucinda Tiedeman. He and his family moved to Oregon in 1906. At the age of 14 he started to work for the Road Department of Clackamas County in Oregon City. He held this job for five years. He worked one year for the Crown Willamette Paper Company, and in 1917 he joined the Navy. He served two years aboard a transport on convoy duty between the east coast and France. After receiving his discharge he went back to work for the Crown Willamette Paper Company on a tow boat. Two years later he moved to Birkenfeld where he worked as a truck driver for a logging company. It was during this time that he met Hilda Salmi and on May 26, 1924 they were married. On July 1, 1924 they moved to Jewell where Merle worked for eight years driving a mail truck. On June 30, 1925 a daughter, Jean blessed this family. Merle's next job was with the Lower Columbia Dairy Association as the driver of a milk truck. In 1944 he took a job as bus driver for the Jewell Schools. In 1951 he went to work as custodian at Jewell Schools and he retired from this job in September, 1960. Merle and Hilda's family consists of their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Justus, Creswell, Oregon, and two grand-daughters, Judy and Joan. Hilda and Merle now live near Creswell. During the period of time that he worked for the school, Merle was always friendly and always willing to give a helping hand. We miss having him around the school, especially his cheery smile and friendliness. He is everybody's friend. We wish him the best of luck in the coming years.
