The Jewell High Student Body dedicates this annual to the enduring memory of Fred Courtwright. Fred Philip Courtwright was born August 16, 1892 in Athens, Illinois. As a young man he came to Washington to seek employment. There he met Marjorie Crofutt and on May 1, 1916 they were married. Helen (Mrs. Wyman Layman), of Portland; Fred N., of Portland; Thomas, of Pendleton; and Don, of Jewell; blessed this union. Fred's immediate family also includes five grandchildren. They are Phil and Rick Layman; Tom, Michael, and Kendal Courtwright. In January of 1945 Mr. and Mrs. Courtwright moved to this community. Mrs. Courtwright has taught in the Jewell Grade School for the past twelve years. Mr. Courtwright served on the local school board for six years and on the Rural School Board for four years. He was also president of the Parent-Teachers' Association, a member of the Grange, a 4-H Club leader, and active with both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. When the community needed a leader, they could depend on Fred, for he had the unusual ability to hold groups together and achieve the uppermost. He was always striving to better the community, especially the school. Fred worked hard for the ad- vancement of our school system as a whole, serving throughout his terms with good will toward all. His multitude of friends, both young and old, cherish his memory. Fred passed away at his home near Jewell in March, 1959. 2
