Dedication The Jewell High School Students of 1957-1958 proudly dedicate this annual to our wonderful Superintendent, Mr. Maitland Goodman. Maitland Herbert Goodman was born May 26, 1917 in Canton, Oklahoma. He was the second son born to Mr. and Mrs. Dave E. Goodman. Mr. Goodman attended grade school and high school in Canton, and graduated from high school there in 1936. After graduation he began working in a Drug Store. One year later found him attend- ing Southwestern State Teachers College at Weatherford, Oklahoma. Lack of money forced him to leave college at the end of the year and he began working in a Grocery Store. The next year found him working for the United States Gypsum Company. In September of 1941 he joined the Air Force. His overseas assignment was to the Philippine Islands and then to Japan. He was discharged in December 1945. In February of 1946 he enrolled in school at Oklahoma State University. It was here that he met and married Mrs. Goodman, the former Cleo Mae Miller. In the spring of 1948 he graduated from the school of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning. He spent the next year working in a Locker Plant. In the fall of 1949 he again enrolled in Oklahoma State University, and in the spring of 1951 he graduated with a B.S. Degree in Industrial Arts. His first teaching job was in Ripley, Oklahoma where he taught shop and coached girls' bas- ketball. The next two years he taught in Enid, Oklahoma. In the fall of 1954 he came to Jewell and in 1955 took the job of Superintendent of Schools at Jewell. In the summer of 1957 he received his M.S, Degree from Oklahoma State University. We must not forget his four children, George, Linda, Charles, and Dale, who are the most important factors in his life.

School Board Front row from left to right: Chairman- Victor Norman; Mrs. Tynne Twombly; Home Wilcoxen. Second row: Fred Slanger, James Borders, Clarence Soderback. The Nehalem Valley Union High School was erected on its present site in 1925 and dedicated to the boys of this valley who sacrificed their lives for their country in World War I. The first principal was Miss Alameda Fuller, and the other teacher was Miss Dorothy Eakin. The gym was built the same year as the high school. Miss Fuller coached the first basketball team. The following were on the first Board of Directors: Mrs. Anna C. Pope Mr. P. J. Kelly Mr. C. L. Wooden Mr. Lee Watkins Mr. Mike Haggren The first clerk was Mrs. C. L. Wooden. Clair Pabilsky graduated in 1926 and, being the sole member, captured all the honors of the first graduating ceremony. We should note that since then changes have been made. A stage was added to the gym only a few years after its construction. On July 1, 1948, Elsie, Vinemaple, and Tidewater consolidated into Jewell School, causing a district number change from 3 to 8. We hope that in the future there will be many more changes. The dream of all the high school students is that there will be a new gym built.
