Miss Helen MCIe Fields -builder of character A Dedication Miss Helen Fields has been a teacher of great merit : f ' -xv. at Scott since 1932. As head of the English Department and as adviser to the SCOTTONIAN from 1953 to 1963, Miss Fields has left a record of outstanding performance. She has been an influential member of the Council of Instruction and of numerous school committees. She was in charge of arrangements for the Scott High 50th Anni- versary, faculty reunion and dinner. The SCOTTONIAN recognizes Miss Fields for her many contributions and achievements over the years. ln particular, she deserves credit for being able to infect . 1932 her students with qualities that are desirable but difficult m to acquire. Thousands of Scotters have left her class with a greater appre- ciation of our linguistic heritage. Helen Fields' mastery of literature enables her to cultivate the mind and imagination with the rich endowment of written English. The works of Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Shaw become en- joyable and lucid ,under her tutelage. Her distinctive voice and manner of speaking set an example of correct diction and patterns of rhetoric which often impress one as an echo from a bygone era. Consciously or otherwise, her high personal standards, her refined manners and literary tastes, her persistent striving for perfection in all she does are qualities that rub off on students. The scholars who have had the good fortune of learning with Miss Fields leave her classroom more completely prepared to communicate with others and to understand the meaning of culture.
