It is a record of your school year and presents a picture of you during the most important period of your life. Regardless of curtailed activities in this time of emergency, here is proof that Scott teachers and students have continued the high standards set by former classes. We hope that you will get as much enjoyment out of this visual record as we as a staff have had in preparing it. Dedication 'll 'll This thirty-first edition of the SCOTTONIAN is dedicated to those men and women who, after their training at Scott, have contributed much to the growth of the community and the nation. To those students who are members of the pres- ent student body, these men and women offer themselves as sterling examples of service and sacrifice. -- fr-rn if if Table of Contents Faculty .. ,... ..,.. We at Scott are proud to have as our guide a man who instills respect, ad- miration, and loyalty in both teachers and students. It is our hope that he will continue as our advisor in many school activities and as our counselor in difficulties that may arise in our lives. Scott High wishes for him many years of added success. EDWARD L. BOWSHER Superintendent of Schools We at Scott wish to add our praise for the admiration which Mr. Bowsher has received from men and women in all fields of activity. Here is an ag- gressive administrator who has acquir- ed training for service in the field of education as well as government. Our wish for your continued success is echo- ed in the great many benefits that have come to us as a result of your able leadership. De uns Miss Anne Smead, dean of girls, has helped many girls through this year of changes. Every problem that has come into the office has been met with courage and un- derstanding. Teachers and students alike appreciate the splendid work of Miss Smead. M :ss Smead ,, Mr. Richard Langstaff, dean of boys, with his many oth- er responsibilities has again found time to help many of the students in school. It is no. easy task to meet and to solve the various situations that have arisen during the past year. However, Mr. Langstaff has merited the admiration of the teachers and students by his calm and efficient han- dling of the work. Miss Kudzia Mr. Langstaff Miss Wilma Kudzia, coordinator of activities, has com- pleted her second successful year in this position. Room 220 has become the clearing house for all social, athletic, and organization material. The work of her office has been so thoroughly done this year that faculty and students owe her a vote of thanks. Mrs. Le-uty Briese, our school nurse, has charge of Scott's section of the General Health Committee sponsored by the Board of Education. We are fortunate in having Mrs. Briese as the guide in this important work embracing food con- servation and problems of nutrition as related to high school students. Mrs. Briese eleven 1 Mrs. Biggs Uffice Staff The handling of grades, the keeping of records, and the many routine du- ties of a large school are efficiently han- dled by the four women in the office. With the departure of Miss Snyder, we welcome Mrs. Mary Mitchell who will serve as our new clerk of books. It is a mystery to many of us how these busy Miss Snyrle twelve people can be so consistently pleasant to everyone they serve. Mrs, Wergz Mrs. Hnomr Miss Wisely Miss Carrie Wisely is the librarian at Scott. Students and teachers alike use her library which has grown consistently un- der her guidance. Her staff of eighteen student assistants de- serve commendation for a year of faithful service. MEM LW ELIZABETH AUFDERHEIDE, A. B., A. M. western University. EARLE F. BAUM, B. S. I Miss MARY PERKINS A gracious teacher and a lover of fine writing has been taken from the ranks of Scott faculty. Witll charm and wit Miss Per- kins inspired each class to know and to appreciate American poetry and modern drama. lt was for this reason that the members of the English department decided to place in the library a collection of poetry to be known as Mary Perkins' shelf. We miss her but we know that the attitudes she ex- pressed will ever remain in the thoughts of her students. twenty-three 9 'i sg was Senior Class The Senior class of 1944 bega11 to face problems relating to their post-school days earlier than most classes that have gone before. In January the accelerated program removed many of its members. The army and the navy both took their usual toll of students. However, the class of 1944 was not hampered in its tra- ditional activities. In spite of everything, all functions received their proper support. Under President Carl Lemle, Vice President Mary Sue Meyers, Secretary Margaretffomlinson, and Treasurer George Freeman, members were given an opportunity to take part in those things which make the last year at school one filled with delightful and lasting memories. The Senior play was given the last week of March under the direction of Mr. E. L. Miller and under the chairmanship of Paul Kyer. As director of the Social Committee, Sue Schomburg planned an outstanding Senior Prom. The Baccalaureate Committee under Marny Lou Wor- den with foresight keyed its program to the spirit of our war world. The Commencement Committee under Jim Findlay was responsible for a graduation exercise meeting the high standards of past years. The spirit behind these achievements was charmingly and efficiently guided by Miss Margaret Schaff, the advisor of the class. The memories of this year must be indelibly engraved upon their minds because of the uncertainty which will be caused by the war and the reconstruction period. In saying farewell to this class the faculty and administra- tion wishes them Bon Voyage as they face the none too simple problems of a much changed and changing world. These members of the class of 1945 are fortunate in having among their num- ber many leaders with the interest of Scott at heart. From them we have not only the traditional activities of the .lunior class but an enlarged program for 1945. J ack Daschner, President, Mary ,lane Draper, Vice-President, Mary Durbin, Secretary, Dick Day, Treasurer, were given wholehearted support by the entire group that elected them. When the J-Hop was announced the members re- sponded enthusiastically and made the event a red letter day in the schoolis social calendar. Every project that was carried on in Scott this year found the .lunior class under these leaders in the front rank. With unusual good taste, the .lunior Ring Committee with David Morgan, chairman, selected a ring of which the members can be justly proud. Miss Schaff expressed pleasure at be- ing chosen the advisor of such an active class. To you, the class of 1945, the class of 1944 hands the responsibility of main- taining its high standards with the assurance that will be worthy of this school in its thirty-second year. luunwuowas Arla Ackerman, Eugene Adams, Rita Adamski, Lin Allnutt, Bob Altenberger, Gerald Anderson. The class of 1946 has demonstrated the ability to follow in the footsteps of Scott tradition. Because the Sophomore class is one of the youngest classes its activities have been of necessity limited. However, under the leadership of Miss Schaff they have been initiated into tl1e responsibilities which they wlll have to carry in the next two years. In the class organization with Albert Sing, Presidentg Bill Black, Vice- Presidentg Dan Jamieson, Treasurer and Sue Trcuhaft, Secretary, the Sopho- mores have forged ahead and have fulfilled the expectations of those who have eagerly watched their progress. As Freshmen, this class started out with a determination to make their four years at Scott a success in every way. They contributed much last year and have gone on to greater achievements as Sophomores. They have participated in many school activities and by their cooperation they have made this a success- ful ear. The initiative the have shown so far ma be considered a forerunner Y Y Y of their accomplishments as upper classmen. SiD5?H1H09MKHRES 'ron-1724 cassav- -nve' mus- -nv ' A mf' . X K , ig 1 uv- Sfkiigf iw .mr:zz's:, : 4, 5, MM -PM X Ray Reisbach Don Loss Margie Greene Ruth Heimlicker Freshman Class In September of this year the Freshmen emerged from the Grade School Cocoon,' and fluttered into a Scott High School that was fully engaged in the war effort. It was so different from the peace-time Scott when the green Fresh- men wandered about its spacious halls like lost sheep., went up the wrong stair- ways, and made themselves so obvious in very much the wrong way. Yes, it was different even though the traditional cries by the upper classmen of uFresl1men, Freshmen, echoed throughout the building, the tone was not that of laughter and ridicule, but of appeal, an appeal to mature quickly, to become a real class of Scotters,' immediately, and not await until they were Seniors. Well, they answered that appeal and very well at that. In the magazine drive they came out in first place, ahead of all the other classes by a wide margin. They also became very active in clubs and athletics, and the Honor Roll was al- ways well dotted with Freshmen. In January they organized their class and elected the following officers: President, Ray Reisbachg Vice-President, Donald Loss, Secretary, Margie Greene, Treasurer, Ruth Heimlicker. Remember, upper classmen, as you critically scan the pictures of the young Freshmen, that they in just a few years will be the leaders of Scott as you are now. They have three long years in which to prepare themselves for doing greater things and they have our numerous mistakes by which to benefit. When they become Seniors it will be in a world at peace, we sincerely hope, and we wish them all the luck and success that is rightfully theirs. sixty-eight E QHLMEN Evelyn Abbey, Robert Abbey, Mary Adam- ski, Lutisha Albertson, Donna Allen, Beg- trice Allman. This statement was heard so many times throughout the year that all Scotter's have become conscious that their paper has truthfully been a newspaper. Everywhere you go in the Thistle room you hear people asking for help from Edith. The reason: Edith Pinkus, the editor-in-chief was an inspiration to everyone on the staff and was a real help with her new ideas for making the paper a success. The cooperation between Miss Leitner and the staff showed a perfect understanding and the work was made more interesting because of her supervision. Jerry Feldstein, the business manager, was always on hand ready to answer any questions and to aid in financial problems. The best news and latest projects at Scott were adequately covered by Irvin Linver, the editor of the first page. Probably the most popular page was the second which contained the gossip about Scotters. Carol Mathis is the one to be credited with its success. A mixture of news was found in the third section. The feature editor, Donna Daugherty was responsible for the clever writeups that were so thoroughly en- joyed. Counciltation, written by Gerry Mostov, gave a review of the Student Council activities. Another humorous section was Bool Dawg prepared by Fred Laderman. Of chief interest was the last or sports page under the direction of Albert Gerbie. All of the main athletic events were related here and Mary .lane Draper took care of the girls by writing Shawn, a description of the C. A. A. Each issue of the Thistle contained pictures referring to Scott activities, and these were the noteworthy products of Marshal lsenberg, the staff photographer. This year the Thistle staff can be justly proud of its work. Through their efforts an up-to-date news recording was made and a more thorough knowledge of Scott's activities was given to the students. Scott High thanks you for your contributions to a complete school life and says give us more Thistles. one hundred six The Scottonion In this war-torn year, thc SCOTTONIAN staff has again reached its goal in presenting to you a complete record of the achievements of 194-3 and 1944. Last year the future of our yearbook was in- definite, due to the lack of needed materials, but through the combined efforts of our staff we were able to produce a smaller but better book. It is one which you will treasure long after you have left Scottie halls as a reminder of the happy hours spent with high school friends. This year again the SCOTTONIAN has been highly successful under the leadership of our friend. Mr. Leiser. Most of the work was readily accomplished in spite of commodities, and the book was sent to press far ahead of schedule. Our editor, Margaret Tomlinson, did much toward the achievement of this goal. She was constantly on the alert and did her 'utmost to keep the work going at a high pitch. Mar- garet proved a helpful influence to all connected with the SCOTTONIAN. Alice Berenson, solely in charge of the business staff, could often be seen pondering over our credits and expenditures. Her efforts have proved worthy as no financial complications have arisen and her sums, products, and quotients have come to a happy medium at the end of the year. The co-editor, Marilyn Kratt, was often seen trying to get things done before deadlines. Many odd jobs fell to her lot and she was always ready to lend a helping hand. Pat Cook, art editor, has helped make our book by adding design and decorative value with her original ideas for cover and introductory pages. The credit for well-panelled pages goes to Karl Bastress who strived for long hours over the panel board to help make this book what it is. Senior pages are well-formed and interesting due to the work of Carlyn Wolson. Bill Cone, produc- tion manager, kept the school telephone busy with his repeated calls to our manufacturers. We were very fortunate this year to have Merlin Collingwood as our photographer. His work is excellent and he was always ready with clever suggestions for new pictures. Our other editors, Helene Czajka, organiza- tions, Eleanor Eppstein, faculty, Bob Murray, sportg and Dan Jamieson, class, were forever striving to pass each other in the completion of their work, but it was their hearty cooperation which really made the SCOTTONIAN a success. When subscription days rolled around it was Fred Miller who was at school early to help and to answer the questions of home room representatives. Now that the school year is over and the long awaited book has been distributed, we of the SCOT- TONIAN staff can look back upon our efforts with a smile. lt is true that while we have been serious in publishing our yearbook, we have been able to enjoy every minute put towards its completion with the knowledge that we were bringing back to life the things that you have done this past year. one hundred eight le tale tbeun OFFICERS President ................. ............................,,......... ....,,... Each home room elects one of its members to represent it in the Student Coun- cil. These representatives arc placed in different commissions, each of which is headed by a commissioner and an assistant, appointed by the president. Late in the school year the president for the succeeding year is elected by the mem- bers of thc Student Council. The vice-president and secretary are elected by popular vote of the student body. This year the Student Council has functioned effectively under the able leadership of Charles Witte. Miss Kudzia was a great help and under her guiding hand as advisor the Council fulfilled many duties such as selling Thistles and 'aScottonian subscriptions. With the cooperation of vice-presi- dent, Dick Ligabel, and secretary, Gerry Mostov, the administrative body led the council through a successful year. The Social commission and Lee Chapman, commissioner, made the year complete with many social activities. Perhaps the greatest job went to .loanne Kurtz and her Assembly commission who arranged for and planned all the as- semblies which we have enjoyed so much this year. This commission deserves a lot of credit for the hard work and the good results. .lohn Hoke and one of his commission members could always be seen hanging a sign or writing an- nouncements because John is Publicity commissioner. The clubs were organ- ized and guided through the year by Barbara Willard, Organization commis- sioner, and her commission. The Welfare commission had Ann Moore as the commissioner and it staged a clean-up campaign at Scott and the efforts were not in vain because the students responded and could often be seen cleaning their lockers. The school's finances were taken care of by Joe Dunn, Finance commissioner. The judicial body of the Student Council is the Citizenship commission. This year Dick Reisbach headed this commission and kept order in the school. Mass meetings and rallies concerning sports events were under the direction of Jerry Brown who was Athletic commissioner. With the cooperation and hard work of the officers, advisor, commission- ers, and representatives, the job of running Scott for the past year has been handled admirably. The Student Council has again given proof that a school can be governed efficiently and effectively by the students. t one hundred thirteen ATE? Alvin Sacksteder, received from his call for prospective foot- ballers a group of green and 'unexperienced boys in the art of varsity high school football. Due to the call of the 'fstars and stripes many of his expected letter- men departed to join the service. The men that he received, however, were eager and willing to practice and struggle diligently in order to form a varsity team capable of living up to the ones Scott High has molded in the past years. Each and every boy labored faithfully and earnestly for many long and tedious months under the capable guidance and leadership of Al Sacksteder and their captain, Chris Koinis. Finally, the varsity squad became organized into a powerful dynamic machine of humans striving to do their ut- most for Scott on the gridiron. The team found a loyal and staunch support in the student body which at- tended the games regularly and held assemblies. These things offered encour- aging inspiration to the team and also to the entire student body. Yes, Scott High can well be proud of its varsity team this year as always. one hundred sevent Row One-James Lixenbaugh, Art Crosby, Ed Randall, J. There was a sufficient amount of boys for a strong, spirited squad, although, the turnout of freshmen was not as great as hoped for. Many more freshmen boys were ex- pected to take advantage of the experience offered by participation in this sport. The team was trained as a separate unit from the varsity although their tactics were the same. They had quite a bit of scrimmage and body contact with the varsity which prepared them for teams stronger than themselves and made the going seem easier when playing other city lightweight teams. This is the first year in which this has come into practice on our field and the coaches agree that this was very beneficial for the future gridiron squad. Joe Collins was personally in charge of the team and his outstanding abili- ties are known throughout many more schools than our own. Joe, consequently, was met with considerable cooperation by his lightweights and he was able to go further than expected in their training. The team as a whole has helped a great deal to form certain standards to be met by future Scott players and they have showed a fighting spirit that many of us think has been lacking on Scott's field in past years. The team was always looking trim and has the best of game equipment since the varsity, having received new uniforms, had passed their greens on to the lightweights. The results of the lightweights turned out about the same as the varsity although they didn't play nearly as many games. They started their season off by hiking over to the DeVilbiss stadium and holding a scrap with the young tigers. In the end DeVilbiss came out on top by a score of 19 to our 6, but our boys came home with a feeling that they knew the game better and they had found the weak spots to he overcome. Their next game took place across the river in the Waite stadium. Our team made a good start and for a while conditions were in our favor, but again the opponents came out on top. This time by a score of 18 to 16. Although their record was not an outstanding one, the lightweights showed a great deal of improvement in each succeeding game. They are now experi- enced players ready to take their places on the varsity teams of the next few years. The boys who wear the Old-English HS know the hardships of the gridiron and are fully entitled to its awards. one hundred nineteen Row One-Louis Thompson lMgr.?, Jefferson Jackson, Herbert Wright, luck Duschner Clarence Walker Bill Chase Ulssistant Mgrj Row Two 'Bob Wick, Leon Jones, Rudy Ochs, Ed Nugent, Jerry Feldsteln Varsity Basketball Captains Bob Wick Clarence Walken' Jerry Feldstein Coach Mr. Alvin Sackstedel' Managers Louis Thompson Bill Franklin Bob Chase one hundred twenty Varsity Baslre tball The Scott cagers played their 1943-1944 season under the coaching of Alvin Sacksteder. Although the Bulldog's record was not too impressive the team was always a dangerous threat to any opponent. The Bulldogs started the season in their own gym with a 50-39 victory over Libbey. The team played a smooth game throughout the contest. The second game was played at home against Central. It was a close con- test until the last quarter when the Scott defense weakened and Central went back to Cherry Street with a 48-29 victory. Next the Collingwood boys met Macomber, only to suffer a 35-22 defeat. Scott traveled to Bowling Green for a benefit game. It was won by Bowling Green in the last minute of play. The score was 31-29. DeVilbiss and Woodward both downed Scott with decisive scores. The Tigers won by a 46-34 count, and Woodward by a 47-11 count. Central came over to the Collingwood gym and went home with a 41-20 victory. Scott's next two games with Macomber and Devilbiss found Scott on the short end of both. The scores were 36-33 and 52-4-5, re- spectively. Our next four games were away. Woodward came through with a 20-15 victory. Scott then came back the next week to defeat Waite 21-19. Libbey and Central both took Scott's measure. Libbey 27-14, and Central 59-39. The lightweights then got revenge on Macomber for an earlier defeat by a score of 31-24. The Libbey boys had no coach but were under the direction of .lack Johns, a student of Libbey. The Cowboys put up a noble battle but Scott was too strong and won a 44-24 decision. Johns was high point-man with 10 points. Our next game was in our pool against a strong Fremont team. Scottis team put up a strong battle, but found Fremont too strong. Fremont went home with a 53-12 victory. - ln the last meet of the season Scott went down to Fremont to get revenge of their earlier defeat at the hands of Fremont. They were again defeated after putting on a fine demonstration of swimming and sportsmanship. The final score was 54-13.
