Doris Dawson, Walley Christopherson, Mary Mashek, Leroy Schuler, Phillip Stoddard, Charles Clayton, and Jean Frush. Miller Studeibaker Brown Mr. Underwood was Superintendent at Jesup for twenty-one years (1965-1986). A Westgate native he attended high school at Maynard, Iowa. He graduated from Upper Iowa with majors in Mathematics and History, along with minors in Physics and Spanish. He received Masters and Specialist degrees from Iowa State University while enrolled in a doctoral program there. He has done additional work at Newark College of Engineering, Western Illinois University and the University of Northern Iowa. Mr. Underwood served in the combat infantry in Europe during World War II and began teaching mathe- matics and coaching athletics at Radcliffe, Iowa, in 1946. He has been a high school principal at Oakland and Huxley, both in Iowa. He became superintendent of schools at Modale, Iowa, in 1953 and held that position at Rolfe, Iowa (1959-1965) before accepting the schools superintendency at Jesup in 1965. Mr. Underwood is proud of the extensive building program including the high school, swim pool, bus garage, vocational agriculture building and locker room addition. He is also happy that the course offerings have been broadened in academic and vocational areas. He still hopes for a fine arts auditorium where drama and music events may be held with excellent acoustics and comfortable surroundings. Mr. Underwood will miss the teachers and other co-workers but he will miss, most of all, the students at Jesup. It is because of a lifelong love for young people that he chose teaching over a career in civil engineering. Juniors School is Fun, Life is Heaven, We’re the Class of “87”! (Students Against Driving Drunk) was introduced by Bob Miner and Jim Gillespie for the first time in this school. It was set up in hopes of eliminating students and adults in our community of driving after they had been drinking. Some goals have been reached in the first year of this new organization. They handed out a “Contract for Life” which was a piece of paper that said if either you or your parents had gone to a party and have had too much to drink then they would call home for a ride. No questions would be asked that night but the following morning an explanation would be in line. Both the teenager and parent sign the agreement. S.A.D.D. sold doughnuts for a fund raiser. They also put flyers on cars at prom in view of a safe evening. S.A.D.D. held an assembly where a police officer spoke about driving and drinking. After having a good turnout their first year, they expect more people to become involved in the years to come. Officers are as follows: President — Brent Kramer Vice President—Jackie Fisher Secretary — Dawn Solomon Treasurer—Paula Althaus Public Relations—Sharon Kayser We would like to wish this newly founded organization a lot of luck in the years to come. S A P D STUDENTS AGAINST DRIVING DRU Events A Murder is Announced Performed on November 8 and 9. We wish to thank the following people for their support and assistance: Charles Underwood, Roxanne Fox, Becky Owens, Collette Johnson, Dot Crowell, Art Kalenske, Rick Studebaker, John Miller, Lydia Emme, and Jeanne Crowell. One thing that would have helped us a lot would have been to have had more people come to our games and give us support. Over all, I think we did a great job! Angie Brown “My advice to juniors on down is that if you go out for something and you're not playing and you are really frustrated, and you’ve already spoken to the coach. Don’t quit! Stick it out, and you’ll get your chance, in time. Sharon Kayser Looking at the season’s statistics, it doesn’t seem like we had a very successful season but I feel that we did. Each of us learned more and got to be better volleyball players as the season contin- ued. We all worked hard and we worked together. If we would have played all our games like we did at sectionals we would have won a lot more. The team won as many games as any Jesup girls team ever and won more conference games than any team ever has. Five girls were named to one of the all-conference teams, and although two senior starters in the guard court will be hard to replace, there are a num- ber of young ballplayers re- turning. Everyone on the team worked hard. The result was a rewarding season for players and coaches. When the top five point scorers on a team are Freshmen and Sophomores it can safely be said that it is a young team. Such was the case with the 1985-86 J-Hawk girl’s track team which had no sen- iors and twelve freshmen among its twenty-four members. This youth combined with injuries to three key members of the team led to a season which was not the caliber of past J-Hawk teams. However, this youth also promises to produce seasons in the future which will be more in tune with the fine tradition of Jesup J-Hawk Track.
