I'd like to leave an echo Whispering softly down the ways. Of happy times, and laughing times And bright and sunny days. I’d like the tears of those who grieve To dry before the sun Of happy memories I leave Behind—when day is done. Helen Lowrie Marshall from Close To The Heart” Page 34 IN LOVING MEMORY OF Our senior year, captured in photos can't show everything. The girls advanced from the sectionals to district play at Du- buque where the tournament trail ended after Hemstead beat us. Our 9-5 C.W. mark is the best of recent years. We had a 21-12 rocord over all in the sum- mer and a 8-K) record in the Fall. Kim Hicks—utility. 37 Row I: Dan Even. Randy Backes. Kendall Rachuy. Brian Woods. Bob Benorden, Bob Kester. After losing their first 4 games, the team came back to win 10 of the next II. This come-from-be- hind” and win the close ones attitude characterized the spirit shown all year, as the team won 7 one run games and 3 extra inning games. The trademark of the team was excellent pitching and excel- lent fielding. Leadership was pro- vided by seniors Rich Barnett. Nick Donlea. Bill Hummel, and David Overmann. Hawks defeat T.V. 1-0 in 9 innings. 38 CROSS COUNTRY AWKS Front. Jim Flart. Andy Smith. Rick Flibben. Larry Ftart. Back: Kenny Kremer. Jeff Matejcik. Bob Kite. Duayne Christopherson In boys’ cross country this year we had both runners who enjoyed being competitive in varsity and junior varsity meets. Larry Hart and Bob Kite were our senior leaders this year. Both Larry’s and Bob’s leader- ship and efforts will be missed. Our underclassmen improved during the season, and had many successful meets. The team worked hard this year, and I am looking forward to working with these athletes again. —Coach Mike Sinram SENIOR SENIOR Larry Hart Bob Kite 39 MARCHING BAND Majorettes: K. Hicks. L. Baldwin. The Jesup FFA Chapter was recognized as a Superi- or chapter by the Iowa As- sociation FFA for the 1980- SI school year. The 76 members participated in ac- tivities ranging from judging contests, exhibiting livestock, proficiency awards, leader- ship conferences, and com- munity service projects. Chapter members crushed eight tons of chemical cans for area farmers in an at- tempt to reduce chemical contamination of farmsteads. A Building Our American Communities project to plant trees and grass around the tennis court was approved by the school board. 49 THE WHOLE TOWN’S TALKING Henry Simmons Hattie Simmons Ethel Simmons Chester Binney Letty Lythe Donald Swift Roger Shields Lila Wilson Sally Otis Annie Sadie Bloom Taxi Driver Mrs. Jackson Girls Stacy Donlea Julie McCarville Director Student Directors Theresa Oberle This year’s fail play was written by Anita Loos and John Emerson. These girls had a tremendous amount of potential which was evident in many of the tougher games we played. However, they also had a lot of pressure on them from the fact that most of these girls were playing on both the J.V. and varsity teams plus the pressures from so many girls that quit the team. A successful program cannot be built around a small handful of devoted players that have little support from their classmates. A lot of effort is be- ing made to improve the ball playing of all high school girls— these girls just need to recognize this and take advantage of it. Scott Mealhow Coach's Comments: The Hawks finally got ’’over the hump as they recorded their first win- ning season since the 1973-1974 school year. Relative to that, the season has to be termed successful. Although many things didn't go exactly the way we would have liked, the season provided many positive moments. Hopefully, the season will provide many useful lessons for the future of Hawk basketball. This team has the distinction of ’’turning the corner in the effort to create a ’’win- ning habit tradition in the J.H.S. bas- ketball program. senior. Al Schaffer senior. Considering the youth and pre- vious experience our wrestlers progressed at the beginning of the season. I felt these young men made considerable progress. The wrestlers had good attitudes and are willing to make sacri- fices that are necessary for us to improve on our record next year. 59 60 PEP BAND Row I: L. Marquart. J. Matejcik. D. McCalley. B.
