Tennis I he 1985 Tennis team was easily one of the biggest surprises of the Jesuit athletic year. No less than four of the top five players from last year departed, leaving Coach Sonny Hester to assemble a squad with whatever he could find. Luckily enough, the one player remaining from last year 's top five as the number 1 player, Andy Boyer. Boyer once again proved to be one of the better players in the state by finishing second in the state tournament. The good news here is that he will return for two more years to terrify the opposition because he is only a sophomore. Senior Stephen Cohen had a lot of experience from his junior year, where he often played as one of the top five. His ability and leadership throughout the season were a great bonus to the team. Junior Brad Resch earned the team's Most Valuable Player award in a unique way. Although he played the number 5 for most of the year, Coach Hester put him at the number 3 for districts, where he performed surprisingly well. Seniors Todd Chase and John Breen were invaluable as a doubles team or while playing singles. Their determina- tion enabled them to make the tennis squad for the first time as seniors and help lead the team to a district title. Other members of the team that racked up points during the season were Brian Mezrah, Kit Jeerapaet, and Joe Guggino. Golf et another sport at Jesuit that indicated a strong athletic program was golf. The linkers had one of their strongest seasons in years under the guidance of Mr. Ziggy Jasinski, head golf coach. The squad was both power- ful and experienced, and both of these attributes helped the team to an excellent season. ' The experience was due to the fact that five seniors led the way for the golf team. Chris Hatton usually had one of t as the best scores on the team after a tough round on the course. Seniors Ted Ruffolo and Larry Villanueva consis- tently would score in the low-to-mid forties, thus enabling T ..i.r, ,if the Tigers to defeat their opponents due to superior depth. g gggg The remaining two seniors, Jon Hurley and Kyle Chaplick, also would score in the same range, making the Tigers a , nearly invincible golf squad. Perhaps the greatest strength of the team could be found J T' in the underclassmen. Junior Steve Stagg had the second r T - lowest stroke average in the county while playing on the area's toughest course. John Finster, another junior, usually would score right behind Stagg and had the second best average on the team. The return of these two underclass- men next year seems to signify a bright future for the golf team. The season ended for the golf team in the district tourna- ment. The district included eighteen teams, both public and - private, from the whole area.
