Track lthough the 1985 Track Team was nearly invincible in running events, without additional prowess in the field events the team would never have been so good. Pole vaulters are a unique group. They practice for long hours, isolated on their end of the field. Led by Coach Dave Ladd, the vaulters enjoyed an especially strong season in 1985. Junior Henry Gonzalez led the vaulters with his expe- rience and ability, and sophomore David Lee improved dramatically as the year progressed. These two will return next year with junior Chris Dawes to form an especially strong group. . Another isolated group was the weight menf' This . j group includes the shotput throwers and discus throwers. 1 j With shotputter Ariel Acebo coming within four inches of the school record, and discus man Phil Tucker placing at districts, the weight men were. an integral part of the squad's success. Long jumping was yet another strong point on the field for the Tigers. Senior Frank Fernandez jumped over twenty feet at districts, and sophomore Akim Williams scored a key first place in the Tampa Catholic meet. Junior Matt Larussa was the teams premier high jumper and often scored key points. The highlight of the fine 1985 season almost certainly had to be the first defeat of TC in ten years. The Tigers didn't lose a dual meet all year, and a third place finish in districts shows the kind of success Coach Bill Alexander has been able to achieve with Jesuit Track. Q- Winning Again. Senior Derek Rodriguez sets the pace in the twosmile run. ? Flying Down the Homestretch is sophomore Lewis Mattison. Lift-Off. Senior Frank Fernandez soars off the board in the long jump. l 1 Track

Tennis I he 1985 Tennis team was easily one of the biggest surprises of the Jesuit athletic year. No less than four of the top five players from last year departed, leaving Coach Sonny Hester to assemble a squad with whatever he could find. Luckily enough, the one player remaining from last year 's top five as the number 1 player, Andy Boyer. Boyer once again proved to be one of the better players in the state by finishing second in the state tournament. The good news here is that he will return for two more years to terrify the opposition because he is only a sophomore. Senior Stephen Cohen had a lot of experience from his junior year, where he often played as one of the top five. His ability and leadership throughout the season were a great bonus to the team. Junior Brad Resch earned the team's Most Valuable Player award in a unique way. Although he played the number 5 for most of the year, Coach Hester put him at the number 3 for districts, where he performed surprisingly well. Seniors Todd Chase and John Breen were invaluable as a doubles team or while playing singles. Their determina- tion enabled them to make the tennis squad for the first time as seniors and help lead the team to a district title. Other members of the team that racked up points during the season were Brian Mezrah, Kit Jeerapaet, and Joe Guggino. The tennis team of 1985 showed something very impor- tant to everyone at Jesuit: Any Jesuit team can win a district title, anytime. s af e If .4 Q 1 ' ' Y... .. . E pk 1 , , 8 r'- - ,, 1 ' -.
