Varsity Baseball l he 1985 season was one of the better seasons in the recent history of the baseball squad. One of the biggest triumphs of the early part of the year was a split of a doubleheader with 4A powerhouse Sarasota. The Sailors were ranked in the top ten of the state for most of the season, and be defeating them once and narrowly losing a second game, the Tigers realized their true potential. From here, the squad moved on to easily defeat rival Tampa Catholic. By this time the team was on a roll. One of the highlights of the Hillsborough County baseball season is the Tony Saladino Tournament, which involves every team in the county. The Tigers opened the tournament by mow- ing down King, a 4A team, on their home field. The next game was to be against Leto with an untried pitcher, Eric Luallen, starting for the Tigers. It turned out that Leto was no match for Bull Luallen. The Tigers defeated Leto easily behind the shutout pitched by Luallen. The next big game was a road trip to play the team ranked No. 1 in the state among 4A schools, Sarasota Riverview. Once again Luallen pitched a complete game victory. A mammoth home run by senior catcher Pat North proved to be the difference. Before moving on to postsea- son play, the Tigers trounced TC again, this time on the Crusaders' field. In the district tournament the Tigers wer- en't so lucky, however. The season ended with an extra- inning loss to Hernando. ims..a,.L, ' 1 P' , .. L I , , . zw,,m,vM1,g,M M. ,. I. . Track sport that is widely popular throughout the world is track and field. Unfortunately, this popularity does not extend to Jesuit. In 1985 the track team had their best season in countless years, but fan support wasn't exactly overwhelming. The heart of the Jesuit Track Team was indeed on the track itself. Most of the Tigers' strongest events were run- ning events. The squad is perennially powerful in the dis- tance events, and 1985 was no exception. The longest event at every meet is the two-mile run, and senior Derek Rodriguez was the district's best. Another senior, Wilson Rowe, finished in the top ten at the state meet in the mile run. Wilson was incredibly valuable to the team in numer' ous other events. The 880 yard run was usually dominated by a group of Jesuit underclassmen. Junior Jeff FitzSimons, sophomore Pat Doherty, and freshman Karl Mattison all contributed at various times in this event. Pat Doherty also starred for the Tigers in the 440 yard run. The Tigers' best sprinter was sophomore Danny McHugh, who often scored in the 220 and 100 yard run. The strongest event of all for the Tigers may have been the 330 yard intermediate hurdles. Seniors Peter Vizzi and Pat Spoletini finished first and second in the district, and junior Chris Casper finished fifth. Peter also won the 120 high hurdles with Pat coming in fourth. This incredible fortitude in the running events enabled the track squad to complete such a super year in 1985. Stunned by this Victory is sophomore Pat Doherty. Charging Down the Runway is sophomore pole uaulter David Lee. Soaring Like an Eagle is sophomore long jumper Akim Williams.
