Varsity Wrestling I he wrestling squad overcame many hardships through- out the season in order to achieve their fantastic pla- teau of success. First of all, Coach Junior Hutson didnit return to coach the team. But before anyone could panic, Fr. Peter Callery, S.J. stepped in from his'role of assistant to guide the team. He did an impeccable job, leading the wrestlers to their best season in years. Disaster also seemed unavoidable when key injuries struck. Senior Clay Smith became seriously ill early in the season and was lost for the whole year. Another senior that had great expectations was John Accomando. He injured his hand and was only able to compete sparingly through the year. Despite these hardships the squad was one of the coun- ty's most powerful. Nearly every ,wrestler on the team quali- fied for regionals, and this, plus four individual titles by Page, Ferlita, McGill, and McLaughlin, enabled the Tigers to earily capture districts. The squad was also nearly invinci- ble in dual meets. The fact that they lost only twice all year is especially remarkable when one considers that the Tigers had no one in the top two weight classes. This meant that Jesuit started every dual meet already down by twelve points. This partly enabled Tampa Catholic to defeat the Tigers, and the only other loss was caused by injuries to four Tiger grapplers. Even in the face of all this adversity, the wrestling squad was able to persevere due to hard work. The future indeed looks bright for Jesuit wrestling. Www. Rising Star. Sophomore Brett McGill displays the prowess which sent him to the State Tournament this year. Senior Scorekeeper. Middleweight Joey Miliziano keeps track of points during a match at the Palace.
