Varsity Soccer I he shocking soccer season of 1984-85 was probably the most satisfying in recent years. The team lost some great players and was not expected to be very good. But they came together after a slow start and produced a dis- trict title. The base of the team's overall strength was the stingy defense. Goalkeeper Al Picallo allowed barely one goal per game while in the net. Protecting him was a wall-like de- fense that terrified opposing teams. Seniors Craig Cuffe and Steve Mastro led the way on this strong defense that was so effective. Junior Jose Jozik could play anywhere on the field and had a great game in the district semifinal against Tampa Catholic. The midfield was highly explosive and often provided scoring punch to go along with their defensive skills. The main impetus for this group came in the form of seniors John Cory and Glyn Hughes. Glyn's skills earned him a place on the Umbro All-American Team. The bulk of the Tigers' offense was supplied by the for- wards. The most consistent members of this group were juniors Hector Zuklic and Kevin McCarthy. Sean McCarthy also provided offensive power with his quickness. Another optimistic aspect of the soccer season was the newfound fan support. The big games of the year attracted hundreds of fans. The soccer team not only had a successful season, but also an exciting one. With this new enthusiasm and the return of several underclassmen, Jesuit soccer can look forward to some great years. Booter Battle. Sophomore Pat Poff vies with a Gaither defender for the ball in the District Finals. Super Sweeper. Senior Craig Cuffe attempts to clear the ball with a bicycle kick. Two-Year Starter. Junior Varsity Soccer hen one thinks of glamour sports at Jesuit, JV Soccer doesn't often come to mind. Each year the varsity team has a great season, yet nobody realizes that the varsity players are usually products of the excellent JV program. lt takes a special kind of athlete to practice every day when he knows that there won't be any fans at his game. lt takes an even more special athlete to contribute to a successful team in this situation. These are the kind of athletes that make up the JV Soccer team. The squad suffered a setback early in the year when Coach Alberto Muniz, S.J. was promoted to varsity coach in order to perform his Galen Hall imitation in leading the varsity booters to a district title. Coming in to save the day was none other than Coach Steve Lewis, a dean among JV soccer coaches in the southeastern United States. Coach Lewis subsequently led the squad to a terrific season. The team was a diverse one, with freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. Juniors such as Scott Lang, Ernesto Arteta, and Tom Whittemore provided the leadership necessary for a successful season. Whittemore was a force in the goal for the Tigers, and Scott He-Man Lang literally terrified op- ponents with his scowl. l-lis ferocious reputation also earned him the nickname Clubber Lang. Freshmen such as Mark Abdoney and Mike Malone showed promise for the future, and sophomores Kent Olsen and Kevin Baker should contribute to the varsity level next year. 7x..f .sg sf ' at, T.
