Freshman Basketball nother indication of the incredible Jesuit basketball program is the success of the freshman basketball team. Under the direction of Coach Dominick Ciao, the squad has one of the highest rates of success among Jesuit athletics. The 1984-85 season was no exception. The freshman team ran up an undefeated record against a tough schedule. The squad displayed the usual freshman team characteris- tics of tough defense and intense hustle. Playing at the guard spots were Matt Albence and Mike Gillis. They were also the key to the incredible full-court press that caused opponents to turn over the ball so much. Joey Rodriguez played the wing and was one of the team's leading scorers. The big man in the middle for the Tigers was Bo Blount. I-le was the team's leading scorer and rebounder. Bo and Joey Rodriguez were moved up to the junior varsity at the end of the season. The other forward spot was manned by Sean Cancelliere, whose rebounding was vital to the fast break. A common characteristic of the freshman team is also depth. 1984-85's team carried through in this tradition with an especially strong bench. Everyone contributed in some way. Coach Ciao used the whole team in almost every game. This fantastic team strength enabled the squad to have such a great year. Some of the year's highlights includ- ed three wins over Tampa Catholic and two defeats of district rival Pasco. Coach Ciao and his team should be commended for another outstanding year. . -,,- .... . ..... . H- . . . 1if fi!fifii'1f?Q?fs,if-1fi ' 3.5:'fi.'l55ffi.'i5i'iheiifzyfiilf2122 .i 1? Varsity Soccer ne of the most thrilling seasons of the 1984-85 athlet- ic year was provided by the soccer team. Early in the season the squad was rolling along with losses only to a future state champion lLetoJ and a defending state champ lTarpon Springsl. After a close loss to Countryside, tension exploded against rival Clearwater Catholic. After some extremely questionable calls by the referee, two players and the Jesuit coach were ejected. This game was to be the turning point of the season. The interim coach appointed to take over the squad was none other than Mr. Alberto Muniz, S.J. At this point the team became unstoppable. The Tigers proceeded to roll over every opponent in their way. They defeated Tampa Catholic once and tied them a second time. Some other big wins included Chamberlain and a visiting Miami Columbus team. The Tigers were riding a 'fantastic wave of momen- tum entering the district tournament. The squad easily moved into the district semifinal to play rival Tampa Catholic. The Tigers came through by stuffing the Crusaders and moving into the district final. Jesuit captured the title by easily defeating the highly-touted Cow- boys. Then it was on to play the tough Marauders of Clear- water Catholic in the regional title match. Unfortunately, the dream season ended with a heartbreaking loss. The squad could hold their heads up high, however, for they overcame adversity to earn yet another district title for Jesuit. All-American. Senior Glyn Hughes displays the speed which made him a selection to Umbros All-American team. Blissful Booters. The team celebrates after scoring an important goal in playoff action. 148 Varsity Soccer i .Mi sw- ., M, 1. 3. ,ff f -.H . ,F N, ,VVV
