Junior Varsity Basketball ne of the most successful of Jesuit's athletic teams in the 1984-85 schol year was the JV Basketball team. They compiled a perfect record of 25 wins and no losses. Two of the most striking characteristics of the squad were depth and size. Leading the way up front for the Tigers were forwards Greg Rix and Akim Williams. Backing these two up were highly capable reserves Greg Butler and Ronnie Pliego. Unfortunately, both of these outstanding second team members were lost during the season for various reasons. As a testament to the incredible size of this Tiger squad, the backcourt was almost as tall as the frontcourt. Kevin O'Flaherty towered over most of his opponents and usually ended up dominating them as well. Right behind him was Kevin Williams, equally effective in any facet of the game. The loss of Steve Bowers and freshman Billy Sims at first seemed tragic, but, as a testament to the team's depth, freshman Dylan Snyder moved in to fill the role superbly. Another unique aspect of this team was that there was no such thing as a benchwarmer. Mike Caballero, Brad Buz- bee, and Lance Caranante all saw action in close games. The record of the JV squad speaks for itself. Coach Neal Goldman assembled yet another dominating team for the third year in a row. The JV Tigers have only lost eight games in three years under his guidance, and this year's squad defeated all opponents, earning themselves a proud distinction among Jesuit athletics. Shooting Star. Freshman Basketball nother indication of the incredible Jesuit basketball program is the success of the freshman basketball team. Under the direction of Coach Dominick Ciao, the squad has one of the highest rates of success among Jesuit athletics. The 1984-85 season was no exception. The freshman team ran up an undefeated record against a tough schedule. The squad displayed the usual freshman team characteris- tics of tough defense and intense hustle. Playing at the guard spots were Matt Albence and Mike Gillis. They were also the key to the incredible full-court press that caused opponents to turn over the ball so much. Joey Rodriguez played the wing and was one of the team's leading scorers. The big man in the middle for the Tigers was Bo Blount. I-le was the team's leading scorer and rebounder. Bo and Joey Rodriguez were moved up to the junior varsity at the end of the season. The other forward spot was manned by Sean Cancelliere, whose rebounding was vital to the fast break. A common characteristic of the freshman team is also depth. 1984-85's team carried through in this tradition with an especially strong bench. Everyone contributed in some way. Coach Ciao used the whole team in almost every game. This fantastic team strength enabled the squad to have such a great year. Some of the year's highlights includ- ed three wins over Tampa Catholic and two defeats of district rival Pasco. Coach Ciao and his team should be commended for another outstanding year. . -,,- .... . ..... . H- . . . 1if fi!fifii'1f?Q?fs,if-1fi ' 3.5:'fi.'l55ffi.'i5i'iheiifzyfiilf2122 .i 1?
