Varsity Basketball nce again in 1984-85, the Varsity Basketball Team completed a fantastic season. Under the guidance of Head Coach John Szponar, the squad made their second consecutive trip to the state tournament. The long season began in September as the team ran in the hot sun for the sake of conditioning. Finally, after nearly three months of pre-season training, the season began. The first game of the year was at Lake Gibson, a school with a strong basketball tradition. The Tigers blew out their opponents with the help of James Hallock's 38 points. This game was an indication of things to come. The squad opened their home season by playing district rival Pasco. Once again the Tigers prevailed, this time before a ram- bunctious home crowd. The machine didn't stop rolling until the tenth game of the year. Thefirst defeat came at the hands of arch-rival Tampa Catholic in the closing seconds of the contest. Jesuit continued to dominate opponents throughout the season. They avenged both of their road losses by trouncing their opponents at home rematches. The team was flying high upon entering the district tournament. The Tigers swept through the tournament with hardly a challenge, then won a regional title in a thrilling home game against Haines City. From there, they captured the sectional title at Gainesville Eastside, a team boasting two all-staters. Varsity Basketball 'IH asketball is a team sport. lf a team cannot work to- A gether, success is almost impossible. The ability to play as a team had made Jesuit basketball such a success in recent years. Another factor contributing to the excellent season this past year was experience. The backcourt was particularly well-equipped in this area. Guards James Hallock and Ricky Bajo were seniors with a year of considerable playing time under their belts. Ricky was lightning-quick and controlled the fast break. James was an exceptional shooter who could score from the outside or take the ball to the basket. The other guard was senior Mark Easterling, himself a fine shooter and a great athlete who helped greatly with re- bounding. The man in the middle for the Tigers was senior center Steve Brooks. When the squad needed a key basket, the ball often went to Steve. I-le also led the way for the team as far as rebounding went. His sidekick at forward was Mike Riviere, whose leaping ability enabled him to score and rebound when needed. Key bench support was provided by juniors Matt Kovac, Joe Caballero, and Chris Casper. Each of these players would enter the game when needed and pick up the slack. The rest of the squad cannot be forgotten either. Without the entire team working together, such a great season could never have happened. With the excellent coaching of Coach John Szponar and the return of juniors and sopho- mores, next year looks bright for Jesuit basketball. Q M., .... ...sf Steam Roller Steve.
