Swimming ne aspect of this yearis team which was unusual was the presence of a diver. Although Angelo Halkias has left Jesuit, he helped out the swim team immensely just because so many schools do not have divers. Freshman Chad Moore stated, Our diver helped us win more than one meet just because many of our opponents did not have any divers. When asked who were the best swimmers, Moore re- plied, I think that Mike Wermuth, Bobby Murphy, Chris Hussin, Wes Rice, and Brian McKinnis were probably the best. ' Indeed, the Tankers were so strong that they sent six of their members to state. Wermuth, Kercher, Hussin, Mur- phy, McKinnis, and Rice all qualified for state. This year 's District Title marks the 10th time since 1972 that the Jesuit Tankers have captured the District title. When junior Bobby Murphy was asked why he thought the swim team has had so much success over a long period of time, he replied, I think that most swimmers at Jesuit are of the caliber that they swim all year-round and on teams outside of school. I think that that kind of dedication keeps our swim team going? Since the strongest swimmers are composed of juniors, along with some sophomores and freshmen, a repeat of this years district title looks very tangible. It seems like every year underclassmen play a major role on the swim team. When that happens, the district titles just keep rolling in. Tanker Talk. Varsity Basketball nce again in 1984-85, the Varsity Basketball Team completed a fantastic season. Under the guidance of Head Coach John Szponar, the squad made their second consecutive trip to the state tournament. The long season began in September as the team ran in the hot sun for the sake of conditioning. Finally, after nearly three months of pre-season training, the season began. The first game of the year was at Lake Gibson, a school with a strong basketball tradition. The Tigers blew out their opponents with the help of James Hallock's 38 points. This game was an indication of things to come. The squad opened their home season by playing district rival Pasco. Once again the Tigers prevailed, this time before a ram- bunctious home crowd. The machine didn't stop rolling until the tenth game of the year. Thefirst defeat came at the hands of arch-rival Tampa Catholic in the closing seconds of the contest. Jesuit continued to dominate opponents throughout the season. They avenged both of their road losses by trouncing their opponents at home rematches. The team was flying high upon entering the district tournament. The Tigers swept through the tournament with hardly a challenge, then won a regional title in a thrilling home game against Haines City. From there, they captured the sectional title at Gainesville Eastside, a team boasting two all-staters. Unfor- tunately, the season ended one game away from a state title with a loss to Crestview. fzyaa-.r,i..t.-,J-.rs . , .. ,. . ww..awww-is-..,..f.
