Varsity Football lthough a great part of the '84 football squad's suc- cess was due to the volatile offense, the defense was incredibly strong for yet another year. The secret to this success was the coaching of defensive coordinator Sonny Hester. He consistently produced defen- sive squads that allowed the Tigers to compete with any- body. The mainstay of 1984's team was the linebacking corps. Led by veterans Bruce Czaja and Kal Gibron, the linebackers were equally effective against the run or the pass. The defensive secondary was a question mark before the season, but numerous individuals stepped in to contribute. This enabled the secondary to hold their own against any- one. The play of the defensive line was also suprisingly excellent. Anchored by beasts like Jose Gonzalez and Phil Tucker, the line smothered most opposing teams. A record of 6 wins and 4 losses may not seem at first to be a successful one, but it was actually a good season. The squad defeated Tampa Catholic for the fifth year in a row thanks in large part to an electrifying kickoff return for a touchdown by Craig Cuffe. Tarpon Springs defeated the Tigers with a last-second miracle play, and a furious Tiger rally fell just short against Pasco. More importantly, howev- er, were the big victories versus district rivals Citrus, Land O'Lakes, and Zephyrhills. Once again, Coach Bill Minahan and his staff assembled not only a strong team, but an exciting one. A needed rest. Junior John Padgett awaits his turn on the sidelines. lmpending doom. Senior Mike Galiger moves in to crush an opposing runner. Play of the year. Senior Craig Cuffe leaves the entire Tampa Catholic team in the dust as he returns a kickoff for a key touchdown. 1 Varsity Football L... Q. 'km -ff use-A

J .V. Football I he JV Football squad completed yet another suc- cessful season in 1984. The Baby Bengals once again managed to defeat all three of their Catholic school rivals with convincing authority. The traditionally strong defense was under the direction of first-year coach John Crumbley, but an observer would never have noticed that such a change had taken place. Coach Crumbley formed the defense into a nearly impen- etrable unit that was the backbone of a tough JV Football squad. Particularly strong defensive performances were turned in by freshmen John Sansone and Ronnie Brown and sophomores Brian Turkel and Kevin Baker. The offense was under the guidance of head coach and offensive coordinator Zygmunt Jasinski. Coach Jasinski is something of a legend among football coaches. He has been guiding the JV Tigers for more years than one can remem- ber. Once again in '84 he produced a squad to be proud of. The offense would lie low for the majority of the game, then explode with a big play. An exciting combination was quar- terback Mike Gonzalez, running back Pete Prinzi, and re- ceiver Ray Mathews. This group would produce big yard- age by pitching the ball to Prinzi, who would then throw deep to Mathews. This play almost always produced a touchdown. One of the most thrilling games of the year was the second game versus Tampa Catholic, as the Tigers offense was unstoppable. Even though the Baby Bengals were often overmatched, they still had a great year. JV Football, Won 3, Lost 5 gi-Jesuit T ',ir,.
