Varsity Football of ig ootball is something of an obsession at Jesuit. The traditionally strong program has bred incredible sup port from the students, faculty, and parents. The 1984 Tiger football squad provided plenty of excitement for all the fans. The reason for the thrilling season was undoubtedly the Tigers' high-powered offense. Whether running or passing, the Tigers could light up the scoreboard. The passing game was led by the state's second leading passer, Charlie Seoane. He racked up nearly 2,000 yards through the air. One of his favorite targets was first-team all-county selec- tion tight end Jose Jozik. When big yardage was needed, the ball usually went to one of two fleet-footed seniors, Irving Ward or Anthony Valdes. When the Tigers chose to run the ball they were also in capable hands. Junior John Padgett gained over 800 yards while running over countless defenders. Running back Kal Gibron, who also played linebacker, was similar to a high- speed tank while on the field. Credit must be given here to the fine job that the coach- ing staff did with the football team. Offensive line coach Dominick Ciao did his usual excellent job in creating a powerful group that could be counted on to protect the quarterback or open gaping holes for runners. Not enough can be said about Head Coach Bill Minahan. He is endeared by the students and respected by his peers, and above all, he produces great football teams.
