Cold wars, containment npeacefuln operations, nuclear obliteration, racism, poverty, disastrous abuse of the environment - in a multitude of ways, the threats and fears of man's inhumanity to himself and his fellow men have dis- turbed what might have been in past eras years of fun and growth. Jesuit has tried to teach you that the solution to the challenge which these things represent is not something to be feared, but something to be grappled with. In perspective they relate to a world which is in the struggle of sing but in the perspective of the Christian they relate, as well, to a world which is ever progressing toward the final victory of the Risen Christ. Each man must fit himself into this struggle, ever more aware that the process will be hurried or delayed in proportion as he succumbs to the evil of selfishness or opens himself to the miraculous power of concern and love for others. Your generation has alerted all of us, young and old alike, to the impossi- bility of facing new problems with old solutions. The next step for you, the class of l97O, is theeone you must take in leading all of us, young and old alike, in the direction of new solutions. Be brave about it, be bold about itg be quick about itl All of us, young and old alike, need you! Be assured of our prayers and support. Come back to Jesuit in future days and tell us of your progress. God bless you, QA ,Mag it Q Rev. Paul Schott, S. J. President PS:mbl OFFICE i CULLEGESZZZZQHA mmf Dear Graduates: Evaluation is a necessary part of our lives. If we wish to be effective and useful members of society, we must occasionally step back and look at ourselves from a critical point of view. Because self-analysis is so much a part of us, we oftentimes engage in it unconsciously. As you complete your M years of secondary education, I think all of you in your more meditative moments automatically look back on your educational career at Jesuit and engage in a mental evaluation of your progress - intellectual, physical, moral and spiritual. Because you are human and because failure is so much a part of everyone's life, this self-evaluation can sometimes be a very discouraging process. You look at what could have been, you regret not doing what could have been done. Evaluation, however, looks at the past primarily with a view to the future. Hopefully, your Jesuit education has provided you with the necessary foundation for correct and proper evaluation and has trained you well to assume responsibilities and to exercise necessary self-discipline in order to improve and'work more effectively towards your goals as Christian citizens. Thus it is our hope and prayer that your proper evaluation of yourself at this point in your life will lead you on to an even greater fulfillment of your intellectual, physical, moral and spiritual potential. Sincerely yours, 5 -My Albert C. Louapr , S.J. Principal ACL!vh PRINCIPALJS LETTER 39-1381 63 v-H 2 iff' Whenever anyboaji needed somebochi to talk with, Fr.. fohnson - no mat- ter how bug he might have been - would take the time to say something meaningful. In his Wce he saw the senior class through the year. But E. was more than a counselor, more than a teacher, he was a fiend in the truest, Christian, sense. The Last Roundup now recognizes a man who has been instrumental in Jesuit's gaining the success and renown it has athletically. But Coach Gary Pasqua will not be remem- bered by the Tangible aspects of sport-won- loss records, district and state championships etc. All these accomplishments must Take a back seat to the example which he set, both on The field and off, as a cultured Christian gentleman. This is how he will be remem- bered. To preach ideals is one thing. To live by them is another. Everything he stressed-hard work, determination, a positive attitude-the Bear incorporated into his daily life. Losing is not a pleasant aspect of the game of football. Losing under Coach Pasqua was doubly hard. You had the feeling that you had not only cheated yourself but that you had made all his work-usually from 2:00 in the afternoon to midnight every day of the week-wasted. The Whole school owes Coach Pasqua a debt of thanks but there are nine seniors who owe him a lot more. Those athletes who received full four-year scholarships have him to thank for it. They would never have at- tained such success without his guidance. None of them are blessed with outstanding natural talent but they have what it takes to be a success-the heart, the big valentine, as he called it. His leadership and coaching instilled in them that little extra. lt is with these thoughts in mind that the Last Roundup wishes to dedicate this section of the yearbook to Coach Gary Pasqua. ll 'Vu 1 f- .
