ERNST Principal Principal’s Message You are living in exciting times — times that will prove more extiting, more challenging, and. yes, more threatening as they approach and eventu¬ ally enter the twenty-first century. You will need every ounce of creativity and all the new ideas you can generate to meet these challenges with all the success that the faculty and I wish and pray for you. Permit me to give you some thoughts as to how to bury a good idea and stifle that creativity you will so urgently need. It will never work. “I ' ve never done it that way before. “I’m doing fine without it.” “I can ' t afford the time and energy to make it work. I’m not ready for it.” “It’s not my responsibility.” REVEREND E.J. JACQUES Jesuit Superior, Theology IV MR. GERALD W JOHNSON Assistant Principal Advanced Math. Calculus MR ARTHUR CARMODY. The Flyers were ranked in the top 5 in the state for more than half the season, ranked number 1 or 2 most of the time They proved their ranking by winning their first 6 games of the season, but with some bad luck they lost the next three games to Ruston, Mmden. and Jesuit Dallas The last game. Jesuit won against Northwood to give them a 7-3 record. The Flyers got a play-off chance by winning the last game against Northwood and with some help from Haughton. who beat Ruston. The season was a good one for making school records Van Warren was put in the school records for rushing and in the district for the leading rusher of the year Alvin Brown for his passing, made it into the school records as a quarterback, along with Wes Ely as a leading receiver for the Flyers. Returning only one starter from last year’s varsity team, the Jesuit team spent the early part of the season gaining needed experience. This year’s team, though small, was large in character and spirit, and went into each game with the will to win. The highlight of the year came in December when the team traveled to Dallas. Texas, to play in the KOC Tournament. During the three-day tournament, the Blue Flyers let the Texas teams see what Jesuit was made of as Jesuit fought and scraped their way to the consolation finale against Jesuit of Houston where they lost a heart-breaker in overtime by two points. The team closed out the district in February with close games against Northwood and Springhill. 85 Top Nagot tries for the shot. Middle: Taylor shoots for two. Bottom: O ' Brien makes a jump shot. ORGANIZATIONS ORGANIZATIONS This year’s Yearbook came off with great success because of enthusiastic staff members and photographers. The staff members with experience from yearbook camp this summer were a great help in putting this year’s yearbook together The photographers helped make the yearbook a better one with their good pictures and cooperation. Special thanks go to Miss Duhon, who organized the photographers and gave them assignments. Mrs. Baker, with much patience, helped get the yearbook published. 94 PHOTOGRAPHERS SGA A Message from the President As this year draws to a close. I keep asking myself whether or not the S.G.A. has really achieved its goals. Our basic intent was to schedule activities and functions which you wanted to have We hoped to create a spirit in the school greater than that of the past. To tap the potential of our entire student body and faculty would be a dream come true. Your S.G.A. wanted to make an all-out effort at achieving this dream. Regrettably. I do not feel that we accomplished our resolution; however. I do believe that many of you discovered your individual importance in our school. No S.G.A. should ever be content until it has completely enveloped Jesuit in unity and spirit. Only then will the Student Government Organization be truly successful. Wes Ely S.G.A. President Wes Ely President 96 Richard Hermes Vice-President Tommy George Secretary Pat Maxey Treasurer Lee Ayres Parliamentarian Mr. Lerchie and Mr. DeFatta Moderators SENATE The Senate at Work The 1980-81 Key Club proved to be one of the best in the area, as well as. a great asset to the school and the community. They put on Homecoming with the money they raised with football programs, they had a pancake breakfast, they had a Snoopy Super Bingo to raise money. This year’s Key Club was no exception to the fine tradition of very active and charitable Key Clubs of the past. 100 KEY CLUB SWEETHEARTS Ann Katzenstem. Camille Cooper. Marylin Hawes. Shannon Eads. Paige Marcotte. Katie Baucum. Jenifer Bush, and Jenifer Alexander 101 DEBATE The Debate Club this year, as in the past, has won many awards in tournaments in town and out. The team, coached by Mrs. Brockington, is always prepared for a debate of any kind. This club has been a great asset to the school as a symbol of its academic excellence as it has in the past. This year, the Latin Club, with their moderator Mrs. Lidia Wilson, has worked with both local and state-wide Latin Clubs toward the State convention in Baton Rouge. Jesuit ' s Club itself held its traditional pizza party early in the year We participated in the State Planning board for the convention and designed a new logo for the convention stationery of the Louisiana JUNIOR Classical LEAGUE Also standing out was Jesuit ' s holding of 3 state offices in the LJCL. The Latin Club’s success was due, overall, to the participation of all the members both on a local and League level Pres.: Mike Black V. Pres.: J. P. Valulius Sec.: Pat Maxey FLYER The Flyer for 1980-81 was a success and enjoyed by all the student body and faculty. The stories in the newspaper ranged in many topics and interest, from sports, to albums, to happenings of the school. The editors and moderator. Mrs. Hyde, worked hard to put a newspaper together that people would enjoy and look forward to all year long They were very successful in doing so. 104 LIBRARY GUILD A relatively new club at Jesuit, the Library Guild has nonetheless been an extremely successful one Although it was originally created to help Miss Chase with the big job of running the library and keeping it in order, it also contributes book reviews to the school newspaper and generally promotes the use of the library. The Library Guild has certainly helped to keep our library ' s high standards. The Guild ' s high standards are kept up by the officers: Jean Brierse. president; Scott Ely. vice-president; Marty Acosta, secretary; and Harlan Whatley, treasurer. 105 CLC The newly revived Christian Life Community under the direction of moderator Fr. Joseph Reising enjoyed many activities to aid the community. Severai members attended a Sodality convention in Morgan City, which helped the new club plan activities for the rest of the year. These include extra help in Sr. Margaret s Christmas Food Drive. Poor Man ' s Supper, and a party thrown for the students at C-BARC. Over the year, the CLC was extremely active and the response at Jesuit has and will promise a successful year for the CLC. 106 CHORUS The Chorus was invented to help out with the singing at many of the Masses the school has to recognize special holidays and occasions. Moderators of this club are Mr Sealy. Mr Lerchie. and Mrs. Bauer They organize the singers to sing a well balanced tune. This club, one of the newest, is sure to be carried on to help the singing during religious services for years to come. QUIZ BOWL The 1980-81 Quiz Bowl team represented Jesuit well during the Quiz Bowl Miss Duhon, who coached the team, was pleased with the work she and the team did during the long study sessions. The team lost early in the matches with other teams, but represented the school well. The team members were Danny Andries. Hugo Holland. David Wallace. Gary Price, and Joe Orsulak BOOSTER CLUB It’s hard to make a new club a success, but the 1980-81 Booster Club kicked off the year with flying colors. Under the leadership of president Bob Fryar. the new club proved to be one of the most outstanding clubs of the year. One task the Booster Club had to perform was to add to spirit at football games. The Jesuit-Bossier game was their first game and added much spirit to the cheering section. The following week, the club received several new members because of the enthusiasm showed at the game. Another job the Booster Club had was to make banners for the football games. What added to the enthusiasm of the group was the ordering of T-shirts for the club Overall, the Booster Club has done an excellent job in contributing to the spirit of Jesuit. 109 The 1980-81 Spanish Club was a success. Consisting of Spanish students taught by Mrs Patricia Hyde, this club proves to be an asset to the school. Under the leadership of Mrs. Hyde and the officers, the club grew substantially over last year. CHESS CLUB With the beginning of the school year came, once again, the establishment of the Chess Club. It was restarted because of growing popularity with the younger members of the student body. It has grown to a membership of over fifty members and a strong financial account to back it up. The officers of the club are: President — Tom Ufert, Vice-President — Ike Hawkins. Secretary — Brant Anderson. Treasurer — Michael Black. Parliamentarian — John Lotspeich. With great luck. Father E. J. Jacques, an avid chess player, was chosen for the moderator Future plans for this new and prospering club are to hold the first annual Chess Club Invitational, to sponsor a chess backgammon event at field day, and to continue its newly proposed bi-monthly tournaments. SPEECH TEAM The 1980-81 Speech team was a huge success. With the leadership of Mrs. Brockington, Mrs. Gremillion, a newcomer to the Speech Team, and the officers, the Speech Team was a thoroughly organized team that won many awards and honors at tournaments in the city and out of town. This year ' s Speech Team should be congratulated for the meritorious work they have done for the club and the school. DRAMA CLUB The Drama Club for this year should be recognized for the work they have done on the play Anthony and Cleopatra. The play to be held this spring is to be a big success for the Drama Club and the school as well. The Drama Club should be recognized for joining the International Thespian Society, a national organization for acting HONORS HONORS Pages 116-127 RICHARD I 117 HONORS TOP PLAYERS Andy Black All District Andy Modica All-District. Representing the junior class were Katie Baucum and Suzanne Otto; sophomore class, Michelle Buss and Catherine Marshall; freshman class, Lila La Vigne and Kelly Faour. Members of the St. Vincent ' s Marching Squad selected Julie Adams as Marching Squad Favorite. Elizabeth Jessup was voted Pep Squad Favorite. Many congratulations to the spirited young ladies on the Court. 126 ACTIVITIES Many Awards Given at the Football Banquet This year s Football Honors Banquet was not held in the Gym like last year; it was held at Centenary. The speaker this year was Coach Cicero, with a prayer by Father Riesing, and speeches from Coach Sardisco and Coach Catanese. The honors were handed out by Coach Catanese and Coach Sardisco. with gifts from the team handed out to the coaches by selected team members. There was a record number of letter jackets given to sophomores, and many to the juniors and seniors. TTTI f ' a 130 Style Show Limited Edition This year ' s Style Show was a huge success, as many people showed up to see the Limited Edition. The Seniors helping out in this func¬ tion did much of the necessary work put into the style show to make it a success. The Mother’s Club did the rest of the work needing to be done. Thanks should be given to both the Mother s Club and the Seniors. 132 133 SGA Gives Student Body Leadership and Activities The 1980-81 Student Government tried to accomplish a successful year for all the student body by trying to involve the students in many ways. The S.G.A. scheduled activities to involve students in a wide range of subjects. These sub¬ jects ranged from Quiz Bowl to Rugby-frisbee. The S.G.A did this well and made the year a more interesting and fun time for all the students of Jesuit.
