'CATTIHY IIBAXIKIEID Faculty Advisor Ji- A In the seventyefive years since 1902, every idea, every belief, every value held by Western society has been relentlessly challenged. Some among us have responded to this threat by clinging tenaciously to tradition, or to the good old days. Others have responded by denying the worth of any belief held from the past. i 7, lt is always easier to throw out that which is unknown to us rather than to sift through myriads of ideals to discover truths that remain valid. But the Jesuit tradition has trained us not to take this easy way. We have learned precisely to study the past, to absorb its enduring contributions, and to use these to create the best possible world for ourselves and for future generations. I W 7 We at Jesuit in the 1970's have opportunities to influence our world in ways not dreamed ot in 1920. We have become an outreaching community, and the advantages we enjoy are many. But one of our biggest advantages is our Jesuit education, which has trained us to take the fullest advantage of our every opportunity. K Q . Certainlyg we would have been reshaped had we never set foot on the premises, but not in the same way. The Jesuit tradi- tion has permeated each of us. We have grown and matured. We have become stronger, greater people than we were before. ji if P W me .IQOG ,ny N rw., . - 3 1 01 f 'Q 4 F m ,F rm 4 Jesuit High School today would be an unfamiliar place in a score of ways to those first students of St. John's College. In 1902, classes were small, hours were long, and discipline was of a harsher sort. While circumstances and people are different today, the essential challenge offered by the Jesuit tradi- tion has remained very much alive for us today. if ' The last seventy-five years have altered the lifestyles, beliefs, and goals of men in profound, often frightening ways. Jesuit is a part of the real world, therefore, it has experienced some great and disturbing changes as well. This often pain- ful process of transformation that occurs at every level of existence is likely to become more rapid and more anguished. But the Jesuit tradition has given us a sure foundation to build our lives upon. If we utilize the foundation given us here, we do not need to fear the future. Rather, we can look forward to it with eager anticipation. !T - , f I I7 2 ' ffff, fy f -fu w'mf1.1-W'fm,'f..:.yf,q 1,mp..sgg,,::.fuf:x,uz.,g,gq affq,.Qlg:n.g1-15 f.f1g.g,7n v.2'i: 5,,Q.,1i,A1.,-'qu' '23, 1 ., -4 uL,gs,f,. -1, 4, l.-1, gf'we.v3,g Q, V, w 3 ,541 4,,,,,,,'. Those seventy-five years have seen tremendous changes. The frontiers in the Continental U.S. have closed, but new frontiers in space have been opened, technology has been developed beyond man's wildest dreamsp some social institutions have changed almost beyond recognition. In spite of all, human nature has not changed. Each of us tends to be selfish, self-centered, willing to trample on others to get ahead. Still each of us contains the possibility of reaching beyond these limited, selfish concerns. It is this possibility to develop this perfectability that led those Jesuit Fathers seventy-five years ago to begin this school. This same hope remains for those devoted to preserving this school for the future. Nevertheless, the goal is achieved only when each of you students wants to achieve this perfectability for yourself. lt is the continued collective effort ofthe students and the faculty to perfect themselves that makes Jesuit the unique institution it is. 2?-IMZM-ff W 'Y' 5. W The Board ot Trustees of Jesuit High School was created when the Jesuit High School of Shreveport Corporation was formed in 1969 in order to free the Jesuit Order of the responsibilities of financing the school and administering the plant. ln 1973 it assumed the administrative responsibilities ofthe school as well. lt is the source of much satisfaction to the Board to realize that the school has achieved great success in every area. The enrollment is at an all-time high, the esprit de corps of the faculty and student body is excellent, and our endowment has increased from S160,000 to over a million dollars. Jesuit High School has continued not only to be an institution of academic excellence but one which provides a positive environment in which personal and religious affirmation can be made. The Board of Trustees is proud of Jesuit High School, its faculty and students, and wishes the graduates of 1978 success and happiness in the years ahead. k - ly, -4 kA-f1, I Kgs-KANMCX.. , f V R . Successful The Student Government Association this year began its work during the summer. We planned all activities for the upcoming year and everything that was planned was a big success. To have a successful S.G.A. it not only takes hard work by the officers, advisors, and senators, but it also takes the involvement of the whole student body. This year I feel all this was accomplished plus a sense of pride was instilled in each and every one of us. I hope that the future S.G.A. will continue the tradition of pride and accomplishment. Since attending Jesuit for the past four years, I have seen the S.G.A. as a step ladder by which we climb each step one year at a time, and with each step we get closer to our destination -- reaching success through better leadership, unity of school and faculty, and greater satisfaction and variety in school activities. The S.G.A. wishes to thank the student body, faculty, and senators for helping us reach our first step. president . QA Top Right: Phillip Cancilleri, President. The 1977-78 school year has been, to say the least, an eventful year for the Drama Club here at Jesuit. We, the officers, began the planning for the year not last summer as most clubs do, but the summer before that. Many obstacles have we encountered and hurdled, most of these centering around St. Vincent's Academy, and I expect to find more in the months after completion of this letter. The club began the year turbulently with the ioint J.H.S.f S.V.A. production of The Man Who Came To Dinner, a comedy that was a critical success if not a diplomatic one. Several other drama-related activities are in the planning stages but as of yet, nothing has materialized to fill the gap between the fall and spring plays. Our spring play, in fitting with our Shakespearean tradition, will be the tragedy of Hamlet. Everyone associated with this production expects it to be a great success, as will be the year as a whole. To begin with, the first annual Jesuit lnvitational Debate Tournament for Novices was held October 7 and 8, 1977. lt was a true accomplishment with 15 area schools attending. After comprehensive coaching sessions with the novice members, the Jesuit squad continues its winning tradition in tournament competition. These achievements were done under the moderation of Mrs. Pilar Briggs and her assistant Miss Nancy Bozeman. The chapter brought national recognition to the school through its attendance at Harvard's Debate Tournament in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Further recognition was gained through one of the teams being selected to represent Louisiana in the Bicentennial Youth Debates in Williamsburg, Virginia. With a continued effort, the Jesuit High School Chapter of the NFL will keep forensics an integral part of a well rounded Jesuit education. Its purpose was to foster an interest in journalism and to be a reflection of the talents of school. My goal this year was to re-establish The Flyer as a school newspaper that was responsive to the needs of the students and faculty. Though not always punctual, the staff endeavored to make each edition informative, interesting, and entertaining. It was pleasing to receive the tremendous response from teachers, students, and administrators, that was part of this year's Flyer. I believe that the 1977-1978 Flyer did much to insure the continuation of a growing y interest in journalism at Jesuit High School. 1 Editor in Chief j KM-M-A 1 I 065 1-iQ- af,'sc P,. - 4 ff ,l X s .1 ST. The highlight ofthe night was the presentation of the 1977 Homecoming Court and the Presentations. With overwhelming cooperation between the Mother's Club and Jesuit seniors, the show proved very entertaining and the meal most enjoyable. Much ofthe success is due largely to the hard work of Mrs. Dossett, Mrs. Watkins, Mrs. McMurrian, and the mothers, who worked zealously for the money that was raised due to the show. The theme of the show, A Jesuit Jubilee, was true to form and set an excellent background for the annual event. John O'Connor, S.J., had steadfastly pursued his objective to set up an academic institution for boys of north Louisiana. His first donation of ten dollars and his first bill for S41 .80 for taxes formed a combination in the red which foreshadowed the many needs the school would submit to its kind and generous benefactors. Following Nov. 3, 1902, the indomitable four Jesuit Fathers who founded the school and their successors, both lay and Jesuit, have struggled against obstacles that would have spelled defeat for less stalwart men. Constantly moving forward with their loyal and devoted friends, officials of the school acquired a new site at 921 Jordan St., built a new plant, and increased enrollment from the original thirty-two students to the present four hundred ten. Because of the efforts of our predecessors, we know the truth of the adage, We stand on our forefathers' shoulders. We recall with gratitude the many benefactors who have brought us to this joyful and prideful moment. We know this is a year to remember, the 75th anniversary of Jesuit High School. Pre-Freshman class discontinued. Jesuit High School of Shreveport Corporation formed. Board of Trustees of Jesuit High School assumed financial responsibility for the school. During the 75 years there have been many events that have stirred the memories of Jesuit's numerous friends, many characteristics that show the spirit of the school, many events that have made history. The 1909 winter was very much like 1978! Jan. 12 of that year had a night snow that remained on the ground all the next day. Feb. 14 had ice and rain freezing immediately on striking the ground. In the early days the Jesuit Fathers and Brothers frequently assisted the parishes when pastors were ill or absent, helped at convents with Masses, Benediction, confessions, and conferences. Bishop and priests of the diocese were frequent visitors at the Jesuit home. These exchanges initiated warm friendships and mutual assistance between the school staff and Bishop, clergy and Sisters, which have endured over the years. The 1902-1910 era witnessed many public exhibitions of the scholarly ability of the St. John's students. The boys were put to exams publicly and presented papers and talks to the public. This practice of speaking and public communication has been a hallmark of the school's training. Its present and distinguished counterpart has been the appearance, in the 1977-78 school year, of four of its students at the Harvard University Debate Tournament. The diary of the first years of St. John's constantly refers to the boys as scholars When a new boy entered it was reported that one more scholar enrolled. The reputation for academic excellence connoted by this title has flourished in the 75 years of Jesuit History f 233 Rig. .... . history here in Shreveport. A recent study of high schools points out Jesuit as one of the superior secondary schools in the area. On May31 st, 1910 Cschool did not let out till June 209 classes were dismissed when so many boys were absent, having gone to the Protestant Sunday school picnic. The schooI's enrollment has always been, in large percentage, Protestant, and the school staff has consistently been ecumenical in outlook, trying to serve the entire community of Shreveport. From the very first there was an insistence and priority given to moral and spiritual development through prayer, the Eucharist, and honor to Christ and His mother, Mary. A school chapel was soon added to the original classrooms. Devotions to Mary in May and the Sacred Heart in June occupied a prominent place in the school day. There never has been any doubt or slack in promoting, beyond academic excellence, the moral and spiritual values and ideals which build a real Christian student body. Parents and faculty have chosen Jesuit for their sons in order to form true Christian gentlemen. It is remarkable that, with the years of the depression staring it in the face, the staff of St. John's moved to a new location and built a new school and residence. The 900 block of Jordan St. was the new location. This remarkable advance was made possible by the Jacobs family which gave its land for the 234 X History -brag-. X., .lf sffb ' lam- R+ Q7 ':!u iUP'xv 1934 new site, and by many benefactors who financed the new buildings. The school responded with characteristic community spirit and patriotism in the trying times of World War Il. The school itself became a military high school, with uniforms and drill. Patriotism, or true love for one's country, is no sham at St, John's, read a special brochure of the 4O's. The co-ed Sodality of the parish and school provided entertainment at its Marshall St. location for nearly 10,000 service men in one year. 165 alumni and three faculty members served in the armed forces, several giving their lives in action. St. John's took a prominent part in the city-wide prayer service in thanksgiving for victory in 1945. Headed by the enthusiasm and leadership of Mr. N. C, lVlcGowen and his hard working committees, the late 40's witnessed the completion of the second half of the present school building and the gym, A plaque and likeness, with a tribute from his fellow workers, honors Mr. McGowen in the school today. ln the 60's the school's name was changed from St. John's to Jesuit High School. The school flourished in the early 6O's, but with the decline in Jesuit vocations in the mid and late decade, the school seemed doomed to closing. Through the persuasion of many devoted backers of Catholic education in Shreveport, led by Mr. J. Robert Welsh, the school was saved for the city. A likeness and plaque in the school today X X honors this significant contribution of Mr. Welsh. A lay Board of Trustees assumed full policymaking authority in the school- saving agreement reached between the Society of Jesus and the laymen of Shreveport, and this Board pledged to be faithful to Jesuit ideals and policies in its running of the school. This amalgamation of Jesuit ideals and lay leadership exists today in the present school, 75 years old yet new and vigorous in its vitality, combining all the rich tradition of three quarters of a century with a present enthusiastic activity and a firm hope for a glorious future for the young men of Shreveport.
