It was a pleasure to see the interpretation of ' ' Jesuit that the yearbook editors so creatively devised Now I would offer my own J is for Jesus, the reason for the very existence of our school The great example that we would like to imitate and that wc would hold up for imitation by each and every one of you. E is for error, the error and mistakes to which we are all heir. If we admit our errors and work to eliminate them, we improve ourselves. Thus the errors and mistakes help to make us better persons S is for the sentiment, the human warmth and feeling that raises our lives from the boring and repetitive to the vibrant. piyous life Jesus wdls for each of us. U is for the urgency we need in life to accomplish anything I is for the integrity whereby our word and our very being is accepted for and as the truth I cannot say it better than Shakespeare. To thine ownself be true. And it follows as the night the day. Thy cannot then be false to any man. T is for the temperance we need to moderate our every thought and action except our love and devotion to Jesus If Jesuit means these things to you. your life will be a joyful, beautiful contribution to the twentieth and twenty-first centuries _I 48 Administration President’s Message Achieving successful operation of Jesuit High School is the obligation of the Jesuit High School of Shreveport Corporation. It was chartered early in 1969, and has functioned since then under valid contracts with the Jesuit (Society of Jesus) owned corporation — St. John’s College of Shreveport. The college corporation owns the land, buildings and furnishings that constitute the physical plot known as Jesuit High School. Jesuit High School of Shreveport Corporation exercises its authority through its Board of Trustees, composed of clergy and lay people, and through the principal of the school. It is probably the most important reason for his attending Jesuit rather than another school. One fundamental ingredient which goes into this education is a faculty. We have a faculty composed of many highly-qualified individuals. Every member is an expert in his chosen field. A great deal of time is devoted to the preparation of classroom activities. Our teachers and administration display their concern for us during, before, and after the school year by activities and special projects designed with us in mind. Just as a Jesuit education is unique, the students w ho make up Jesuit are unique. We are fortunate to have administrators who realize this. No pupil fits into a stereotype or mold. Our uniqueness is encouraged as well as respected. The relat ionship between the administration and students is one of understanding and mutual respect. This makes going to class at Jesuit a most worthwhile experience. TOP RIGHT Fr William Ktdwell.S. A new attraction was the selection of eigh St. Vincent ' s seniors as sweethearts. Homecoming was a tremendous success, along with the football program The success of these activities was due to the hard work of the members and candidates. I stated, There will not be a single person who has walked through the doors of Jesuit who will not have gotten involved in some way, shape or form with the S.G.A. I said this optimistically but I am now saying this as a fact and with great pride. The S.G.A felt that the students of Jesuit are exceptional and capable of excelling in anything they try. This year the S.G.A. tried to pull Jesuit together to unite, to fulfill our potential and become one school with one purpose — to get the most out of what Jesuit has to offer And if you look back on the school year of 1976-77 you’ll see that we have proven just that to you. I hope that the future S.G.A. will continue in this tradition of boosting school spirit and school pride. All of this was due to excellent coaching and dedication on the part of the players. The Flyers first showed their stuff in the Jamboree, downing both Green Oaks and North wood by scores of 14-0. The season officially began with games against tough Quad-A teams, all of which had beaten us last year. Jesuit won its first game against Airline with a score of 6-0. The next victim of the Flyers ' wrath was Bossier, toppled by a score of 21-14. Southwood played a fantastic game against us, but were no match for the Flyer defense as the game ended 21-14, Jesuit. It should be noted that all three of these teams were in the Quad-A play-offs. Homecoming was the Distria opener against Springhill. The Lumberjacks went under by a score of 17-0. Quad-A Green Oaks was dumped with a score of 27-0. Next the Flyers traveled to Ruston for another district game. The Bearcats could not ruin the Flyer winning streak and lost, 10-3. Northwood, another distria game, was won by Jesuit, 30-0. Another Quad-A opponent, Byrd, was totally clobbered with a 33-0 score. Jesuit faced its biggest 1-AAA competition against the Haughton Buccaneers. Although the Buccaneers gave it their best try, they were unable to score on the Big Blue, losing 21-0. The last game of the regular season against North Caddo resulted in a Jesuit win of 17-0, a 10-0 season, and the District 1-AAA championship. Wossman was the first play-off game. Remembering the embarrassing defeat last year, the Flyers won by a score of 3-0 with a field goal by senior Steve Scon. The quarter-final game was played in Alexandria against 3-AAA champion Bolton. In spite of the faa that no. 1 runner Paul Cordaro had been injured in the previous game, Jesuit still capped a victory with a score of 23-20. A long-awaited and important contest faced the Blue Flyers. In the semi-final match Jesuit was pitted against no. 1 ranked and last year’s state champions, the Lutcher Bulldogs. Overcoming almost overwhelming odds (one of which was playing in the Lutcher stadium), the Flyers beat the Bulldogs by a score of 17-7. Last, and definitely not least, was the final game in which Jesuit faced the Winnfield Tigers. No amount of talking and mudslinging by the Tiger coach could prevent the Flyers from winning this all- important game Winnfield had its first shut-out of the season, 7-0, and Jesuit had the state title. There were many outstanding players for Jesuit this season. Mike Watts, Paul Cordaro, Steve Thornton, Greg Page and Fred Johnson made their marks on offense. Outstanding defense players were Gene Mack, Brian Doran, Drew Dossctt, Pat Mitchell, and Greg Page. Steve Scott gave the Flyers numerous field goals and extra point kicks, and John Marshall proved a great quarterback. But it was a team effort that made the Flyers no. 1 and gave them the coveted state trophy. Sports 103 TOP LEFT: Offensive line awaits the snap. The players consistently improved and support from the fans was strong. Coach Sharrah helped the team with its development. They practiced diligently between games and carefully planned the strategy for every upcoming game. Improvements were made and many pitfalls were overcome. Jesuit had many fine players. Jeff Springmeyer was one of the leading scorers in district. Seniors Mike McCarthy and David Pullman were great scorers and ball-handlers. Although shorter than most players, Craig McMullen can really hustle. Jimmy Wilmore, a junior, displayed great skill on the court. We have high hopes for next year’s season. Coach Sharrah and Coach Mawhinney have some good junior players and many other hopefuls. With morale, team work, and support from the school, we will have a good season in 78. In the five games that the club did play, not only did they emerge the winner, but they also did not allow any points to be scored against them. The soccer club entertains the hope of a spring season, with more high school teams participating. TOP LEFT Senior players watch action from the sidelines. Active This year’s Student Government Association was the most active ever. The activities started in the beginning of the year and became more involved as the year progressed. The first activities centered around the Big Brother program. There were Big Brother dances and picnics. Following these there were cheering and banner contests during the football season. A spirit week was held in conjunction with homecoming. A chess tournament and football and basketball tournaments between technical classes were sponsored. The SGA brought guest speakers to entertain and inform the students. The SGA is a vital pan of life at Jesuit. We are privileged to have one that is so active TOP LEFT The class of 4F panicipates in the class cheer contest. TOP RIGHT Cra ig McMullen smiles as his team, 4H. wins the intramurals BOTTOM Dorothy Hamill and Co. CLC Active in Community Affairs The Sodality had very many accomplishments this year. It started the year off by hosting the southern region Christian Life Community convention in which people from all over the south attended. This brought people together and allowed them to meditate on the theme of the convention, Who Are You?” Many times this year the Sodality supported the Right to Life Movement which campaigns against abortion. The Sodality was represented by various members when Ronald Reagan and Mrs. Jimmy Carter came to Shreveport. The Sodality helped with the Canned Food Drive at Christmas and with Sr. Margaret throughout the year. One of the main projects was the Poor Man’s Supper. The Sodality, along with the Key Club, provided 60 to 80 people who prepared for the supper, worked during the supper, and cleaned up afterwards. The future plans for the Sodality include the Mission Drive and the National C.LC. Convention which is to be held this August in New Orleans. Jesuit and members of the Mothers’ Club gave a good deal of time and effort to prepare the show and make it a success. This annual presentation is of great value to the students of Jesuit High School. By selling tickets to the show, the Mothers’ Club obtains money which goes toward many of our extra-curricular activities. We are grateful for this tremendous contribution from these conscientious parents. Add to that newspapers and magazines, radio and television, your conversations with friends and the letters you write and we think you ' ll agree that communications is a big part of your life. Robert Welsh The 1977 Flight is dedicated to Mr. J. Robert Welsh, an outstanding gentleman and civic leader of Shreveport. Respected by businessmen as the far-sighted President of SWEPCO, by educators as the very involved Board member of Centenary College, by Southerners as a Yankee who has assimilated the outstanding qualities of the Old South, by friends of Jesuit and of Catholic Education as the saviour of Jesuit High School and of the only Catholic boys high school in Shreveport. Mr Welsh served as President of the Board of Trustees of the then newly formed Jesuit High School of Shreveport Corporation that in 1969 assumed financial responsibility for Jesuit High School and in 1972 assumed full responsibility and authority for all aspects of the school. Mr. Welsh devoted countless hours and untiring zeal and effort to Jesuit High School. It is impossible for us students to adequately express our gratitude to Mr. Welsh for his devotion to Jesuit High School, but we hope this dedication will be accepted as a token of our deep gratitude to and respect for this outstanding Catholic gentleman whose work in our behalf will have made all of our lives a little better. 224 Dedication TeykH Pobtittang Company 1 3 9 Au tograph — FLIGHT 1977 Jesuit High School Shreveport, La.
