The 1976 FLIGHT DEDICATION MR. GERALD JOHNSON Most often, recognition is not given to some-one until his life is ended. In this regard, it is not muc h recognition to the person at all. In the last twenty-five years it has become obvious that change is progressing at a geometric rate — 2,4, 8, 16, 32, etc. — instead of at the arithmetic rate as in the past — 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,6. This geometric rate advancement of change has caused the advent of such books as Toffler s FUTURE SHOCK. Change is also what Jesuit High School is all about. Jesuit’s goals of developing leaders of future generations imbued with Christian ideals does not change. Jesuit’s methods do change in its efforts to motivate you young men under its influence so that you change yourselves to become more mature in your attitudes, wiser in your judgements and more Christian in your actions. _ 52 Administration Thoughts From The President Men adaptable to the changes of the future: such is the ideal Jesuit sets for its graduates. The rapid changes of the immediate past forecast even more profound, more rapid change in the future, and no preparation geared to static positions can possibly meet the challenge. Adaptability alone is the answer; it means being constant in ideals, but flexible in realizing and embodying the ideals in concrete circumstances. More than anything else it means being clear about one’s aims coupled with the ability to discern means” from ends.” The adaptable graduate of Jesuit will not merely survive the future; he will alter its course. Martha Calantone Faculty Is Truly Concerned 56 Administration Teachers Show Wit And Wisdom 60 Administration Every Course Designed With Us In Mind ) Individuals Work For Our Growth Today, teaching is becoming an increasingly impersonal and demanding profession. Teachers are acting more like guards and police officers than the educators they should be The rappert between student and teacher that is imperative for a real learning experience is sadly lacking. Fortunately for us, things are not like this at Jesuit High School. Our faculty and administration is a group of highly motivated individuals who give themselves to us in every respect. Each of us here at Jesuit is special because lie is a person. Our administration knows this and works w ith each student, always respecting his individuality, to make him a more- complete person. Our teachers do just what the name implies, they teach. But they do more than that. Our teachers care enough to listen to us, to guide us, and even to learn a little from us in the process. Busy afternoons, long nights, hectic holidays — these are only a few of the sufferings staff members went through to get the FLIGHT out. The individuals on this year’s very small working staff had a heavier work load then ever before. Ultimately, this required a lot of dedication. The staff would like to thank Paul Miramon, Keith Crane, Mrs. Catherine Baker, Mr. Hrnst, and especially our advertisers. The support they gave this year is greatly appreciated. Second, I wanted to get more people working with the newspaper. Both of these goals were accomplished. 1 was really surprised at the number and quality of writers that had never shown any previous interest in the newspaper but helped this year. I know that there is still room for improvement in THE FLYER, but this year’s newspaper was a definite improvement over past issues and I hope that next year ' s editors are successful in their jobs. The revolution came about after seven area students attended the Christian Life Community Convention in Amherst, Massachusetts. Sparked by the convention, Jesuit and St. Vincent’s has been joined with Notre Dame to form an active community. By creating such a community, members have learned to recognize the needs of others and themselves. Also, Ckxi’s revelation of Himself in events of daily living has become definite. Although our ranks have been reduced to a little more than half of last year’s number, we were at last holding our own against powerful local schools. Mostly responsible for this was dedication to the excellence everyone expects of Jesuit. This dedication expressed itself through long hours of summer research into the scarce world resources questions for the debaters, and numerous coaching sessions for those in individual events — all under the watchful eyes of our ' moderators: Mrs. Briggs, Mr. Wolcott, and Fr. This year was Tony Catanese’s first as head coach He had a challenge in store for him in that an unusually large number of starters were out for just about every game The Flyers had to contend with everything from freak accidents to an extra-ordinary number of on-the-field injuries But undaunted. Snoopy’s Squad grabbed a slot in the play-offs and played a very respectable season in every way In the Caddo Jamboree that previewed our players, the Flyers took on Fair Park and won 3-0. In the first season game. Airline defeated Jesuit 14-0. Clement Fox and Frank Cicero both made a great showing in the game against Bossier. Unfortunately, the Bearkats won the contest with a 32-7 win Southwood had to really hustle to whip the Flyers Senior Brian Roeten showed the stuff of which he is made with a 31-yard TD pass in this game The game ended in the Cowboys’ favor, with a score of 13-7. In the long-awaited contest berwern the Flyers and the Springhill Lumherjacks, the Jacks pulled off a 23-0 win But of this game Coach Catanese said, I thought we did a good job on defense They only earned their last touchdown The first Flyer victory of the season came when Jesuit hosted Green Oaks and turned the tables with a decisive win of 17-6. Jesuit followed up her first victory with a second against the Ruston Bearkats Being beaten 17-0, the Kats probably wished they had never seen Fair Grounds Stadium Mike Fess. playing tailback, rushed for 88 yards on thirty carries against the Ruston defense Clement Fox caught two touchdowns Frank Cicero made his presence known with a 28 yard field goal Homecoming week was sweetened when the Flyers ripped Northwood apart with a 42-0. Mike Fess led the way again; he rushed 13 7 yards on just 16 carries Clement Fox and Philip Cancillen both received touchdown passes thanks to Tom Bullock and John Marshall Frank Cicero’s kicking was flawless on this important night Randy Mondello made his big brother Sammy a little more than jubilant with a 33-yard punt return in the fourth quarter Byrd put an end to the Flyers ' streak, but only with a close 9-6 win The Flyers came back and took the lead over Haughton with a score of 7 - 0 . The intrepid Mike Fess made the winning touchdown with 3:04 remaining in the fourth quarter In the last game of the regular season. Jesuit was defeated 12-0 by North Caddo Nevertheless, the Blue went on to Wossman for their play-off game The score was 19- 7 in Wossman ' s favor For the record, Clement Fox broke the all-time receiving career record for passes caught at Jesuit with 63 passes caught for 873 yards Frank Gcero kicked seven consecutive field goals, setting another career record here at Jesuit Jesuit finished 4-6 for the regular season This was a disappointment to Coach Catanese and all of us But scores and statistics are not always accurate reflections of a team’s ability The Flyers know how to work, they know what it means to be real athletes After all, that’s what really counts Sports Activities Opposite Page Upper Right Pineda, Hebert, and Pumilio tackle a Cowboy receiver Left Jesuit Flyers prepare for Bullock’s signals Extreme Left: From the look on Coach Catancses’s face, we know he’s t to win. Coach Carlisle has worked very hard and very ably to bring basketball at Jesuit up to the level of perfection that we have maintained in other fields of endeavor This season was a disappointment for the Jesuit cagcrs They worked many long hours, always exhibiting the dedication that Jesuit is known for. In reality, the scores didn’t present an accurate picture of real Flyer talent The Flyers did play well against some tough teams But often they were simply out-manned Losing the first five games, the Jesuit cagers were understandably shaken in morale. Once it settled in, this losing syndrome” was hard to shake off. But again, Jesuit had some very fine talent. Seniors Chris Ward and Gil Goodrich were both very good shooters, as was junior Jeff Spring meyer Ward, Goodrich, and senior Clement Fox showed themselves to be excellent rebounders Too, Fox came out strong defensively Senior Mike Lindley was definitely an excellent ball-handler and play-maker. Dwayne Williams, also a senior, really showed the fans he could hustle the ball Several of the games bear special mention, for they were prime examples of the Flyers ' fighting spirit North Caddo beat Jesuit only after a real struggle. Only in the third overtime did North Caddo come out the winner The 106-31 Jesuit victory over Notre Dame was truly an exciting game This score of 106 points was the highest ever totaled by the Flyers. Jesuit gave Wossman a good fight both offensively and defensively. The Ruston and Byrd games were also svell-played by the Flyers. They showed their spirit in spite of anything that happened It should be obvious that the Flyers were fighters in the best sense of that word. Next year’s team shows quite a bit of promise Juniors Les Cowel and, Jeff Spring meyer are both playing well, as arc many others among the junior squad. It should be said that Coach Carlisle is an excellent coach. The three years of his career here have seen constant improvement in his coaching ability With his help, the Jesuit Flyers will continue to show that they are a team to be reckoned with More of their same hard work — coupled with an increasingly heightened morale — will make people realize that they are winners. Soccer Club Expands The Jesuit Soccer Club took its first trophy ever offered in St. Andrew’s first annual Soccer Tournament and in doing so played its longest game ever, going into quadruple overtime to break the one to one tie ending the game one to two. The Club’s season w as a short one in the way of games this year as there was a slight breakdown in communications with the other soccer clubs allowing the club to schedule only four high school games; three against First Baptist and one against St. Joseph. Though playing only four season games this year, the club was at an all time high with twenty-five regular players indicating a growing interest in soccer by the student body. To fire up the student body of Jesuit and St. Vincent ' s, the cheerleaders and coaching staff worked together to produce a highly spirited and imaginative pep rally. Thoroughly inspired, the Flyers really went after the Northwood Falcons and snared a 42-0 win. Jesuit and St. Vincent’s celebrated their victory with the help of Bayou Teche. The music was well performed and it certainly added to the spirit already waxing strong. During the dance, the Homecoming Court was presented by the senior football players. Homecoming is enjoyed by everyone; it would not be possible, though, except for the dedication of the Key Club Members of this organization make all of the vital prepa rations. The evening consisted of three one-act plays, each different in nature and theme. The first play was Hooray for Adam Spelvin — He Is Perfect, which comically describes the terrors of parental overpermissiveness, but led the audience to a twisted, tragic ending Adam Spelvin was directed by senior Bryan Reeder. The second offering was The Oyster and the Pearl. This one-act, directed by Mrs. Diana Ely, dealt with the idea that even an unpearled oyster can bring hope — and, ultimately, happiness. The final play was the warm and witty The Mice Have Been Drinking Again. It told the story of a young couple’s attempt to rid themselves of a cousin who lives in their clothes closet. The cast was expertly directed by Mrs. Kay Olsen. Of course, the play could not have been a success without the talents of Mr. Fred Engelke and the hardworking, dedicated stage crew. 1 20 Happening Tup Clay l-irrabce shows Mr Van Duscn his ad in the paper Left Harry Van IXiscn tells us a little about himself Right Togo his plan rolling, jerry makes a call to order one Zen guru OPPOSITE PAGE Top Hamid explains to Roxanne that he is more than she expected Middle left Florence gasps at what she sees. Events Numerous This year’s projects undertaken by the S.G.A. were many and varied. In an attempt to instill spirit in the school the S.G.A., working along with the new ' officers and representatives of the classes, sponsored Spirit Week. Other activities included football and basketball tournaments, special interest assemblies, dances, the Talent Show, and the film festival. These diverse activities had a lasting effect on the student body. Not only did the S.G.A. sponsor many events themselves but they helped support classes and clubs in their endeavors. They even made a couple of thought-provoking speeches. All in all, the S.G.A. made this year a very active one for the students and faculty. One of the traditional features of the Luncheon and Style Show is the participation of the Jesuit senior class. The seniors assist in the setting up of stage and tables and other necessary preparations. On the day of the luncheon, they serve the refreshments and the dinner that follows. Sodality members participated in service work and spiritual development. The first activity of the year was the Vigil for the Feast of Christ the King. This vigil, sponsored by St.John’s, saw many Sodality members participating. Sodality members from Shreveport attended the diocesan Holy Year Rally to make a presentation on the recently canonized Elizabeth Seton. The Sodality supplied volunteers for the Christian Service Program. The canned food drive and Poor Man’s Supper were special projects. On Shreveport Right-to-Life Day, Sodality members sold roses in shopping centers to dramatize the abortion dilemma. The Sodality sponsored a fund drive for the Jesuit Missions, which aided the poor of the Third World. The Sodality will continue to develop its program of work and prayer. These historic words, the first sentence ever transmitted over an electric telephone, were uttered by Alexander Graham Bell when he accidentally spilled acid on his clothes. The acid was part of the trans¬ mission apparatus, called the Liquid Telephone ; the receiver was a tuned reed. From that beginning, the telephone has grown to become a necessary part of everyday life. In 1976, the Bell System has nearly 120 million telephones in service. Worldwide, there are about 350 million telephones in service, 99.5 per cent of which can be easily reached by the Bell System. The Shreveport Works of Western Electric plays a significant role in the telephone story. Right here in Shreve port, we manufacture over half of all new telephone sets for the Bell System, giving our city the distinction of being the Telephone Capital of the World. Our 5,400 employees will continue to provide South Central Bell and the other Bell companies with quality tele¬ phones and related equipment. The theme of this book is change,” a theme which denotes a broad area of ideas and concepts. As you all know, this is our country ' s bicentennial year, a year of looking backward to the past. A yearbook works on the same principle; it is a way of preserving the present for the future. We ' ve made many changes in this annual. Some, like the format, are quite obvious; some are ncj so obvious, so why try to explain them. Whatever the changes are they have been made intentionally — not just for the heck of it. Hopefully, you ' ve read the book thoroughly (you’re reading this page anyway) and you’ve looked at the pictures. In this way, you have remembered things that have affected you, things that w r erc good and bad. Remember one thing: It s your life and you can make it anything you like. You can change. Whether you ' re reading this on May 21,1976, or 1996, you can always change. So close the book, the world is moving on. Time is passing by and you ' re a visitor on this earth like everyone else.
