A 28 Dag Hammarskjold Student Government Association The Student Government Association has worked with great vigor this year to unify the student body, and instill in each student a sense of pride in Jesuit. Our Student Government ranks as one of the most active in Louisiana. This year, the SGA sponsored two Student Government weeks, two overwhelmingly popular dances, and a Student Talent Night, portraying the Jesuit Showmen at their best. If one word could possibly describe the 1973 Jesui t Blue Flyers, this would be the word. Virtually unheralded at the beginning of the season, the Flyers showed their strength by compiling a 5-1 district record, thus gaining a share of the 1-AAA district crown, along with North Caddo, a team which the Flyers crushed 38-6. Before the season, Jesuit fans were hoping for a .300 season at best. The Flyers fulfilled these wishes with an overall record of 5-5, a record which fails to tell the whole story. In the season opener, the Flyers traveled to Airline Stadium to take on the highly ranked Airline Vikings. In a tough defensive battle the Flyers lost 6-3, managing only a field goal off the toe of Bud Jackson. Next, the Flyers took on Fair Park and Jack Witte. Throughout the game, Witte became extremely well acquainted with the rush of Sibley, Cordaro, Gehl, and Guillot but still managed to pull it out in the final minutes of play. The result: Indians 13, Flyers 7. The Flyers opened their district season against Haughton and easily handed the Bucs a 15-8 defeat. Next came arch-rival Bossier, a non-district game. This wasn’t the Flyers’ night for offense as a tough Bcarkat defense shut them out, winning 7-0. However, the next week the offense came back with a bang, as quarterback A1 Cannon threw for three touchdowns, two of them to Bill Haynic, as the Flyers trounced North wood, 20-0. For the first time in the school’s history, the Flyers played Webster of Minden, a district foe, in the next game. The Jordan street bunch blasted the Wolves 28-0, as the only thing Webster had on its side was a flashy announcer. Next came the big one. Two undefeated district 1-AAA teams clashed at Captain Shreve Stadium for the district title. The Game of the Century ? The Flyers annihilated North Caddo, 38-6. Next the Flyers defeated Minden to insure at least a tie for the crown. In the last game of the regular season, the Flyers lost to Springhill, thereby being forced to share the district title with North Caddo, retaining a playoff berth. For the first time in four years Jesuit was in the playoffs. However, they didn’t stay long. In the first game, the Flyers were knocked off by a strong, quick Carroll team by a score of 26-13. It was a typical Flyer game, as the Big Blue never gave up until the final horn. UPPER LEFT The Flyers load the bus and head for the stadium. Most importantly, they tried. No one can take that away from them. An athlete can do nothing more than give 100 . The Flyers started off with a bang, placing 3rd in the Springhill tournament. After that, there were few bright spots in the season. However, with spirited students behind them, the Flyers did manage to win several games. The team, consisting of Carl Calender, Pat Boose, Robert Pou, Arthur Carmody, Hal Wright, Les Jones, Ben Ferris, Tim Dillard, and Clement Fox, had to fight for everything they could get, and under the direction of rookie coach, Jerry Carlisle, they exhibited signs of good sportsmanship, which comes from good coaching. Our Town . a play that traced the life of young Emily Webb. Emily and her family lived in the small town of Grovers Comers, New Hampshire, around the turn of the century. Wilder spans the range of human emotion in this three-act drama which emphasizes the importance of the seemingly insignificant moments of man’s life on earth. The performance was critically acclaimed as an outstanding endeavor and over 800 people attended, making Our Town the most successful Drama Club production to date. Sports Honors 1973 produced the greatest football team in recent Jesuit history. Seven individuals were named to the All-District 1-AAA team. A1 Cannon, quarterback for the Blue Flyers, led the team to their first playoff berth in four years. Junior Chet Chandler barely missed the 1000 yard mark this year and provided the Flyers with a dangerous running attack. Chet also was voted to the sports writers’ All-City team. Chris Sibley and Roy Cordaro made the team twice, on offense and defense. Speedster Bill Haynie and sure-handed Randall Hermes were outstanding receivers for the team. Rocky Guillot earned All-District, All-City, and All-State honors. It was Rocky’s inspiring determination and hard work that led the Flyers to a district championship and merited his selection as Outstanding Defensive Player in 1- AAA. The coveted trophy, shown at right, is the result of this team’s spirit and dedication. ROCKY GUILLOT Class Officers The foundation of the student body of any school is the individual class. National Honor Society The school year 1973-74 was a very productive one for the Jesuit High School National Honor Society. Under the direction of faculty advisors, Fr. Bannin and president Glenn Robicheaux, the NHS combined with the St. Vincent’s NHS to hold College Night, which proved most helpful to all. Also, for the first time in the school’s history, the NHS sponsored an organizational banquet, honoring members of the respective school organizations. Officers (L to R ) S. National Scholarship Winners Every year high school students from all across the country take the National Merit test. On the basis of their scores, certain students are honored by being named as finalists in the scholarship competition. George Tomkies (Upper Right picture L. to R.) a senior at Jesuit, was honored by being chosen as a finalist in the National Negro Achievement Scholarship competition. George was selected from students all across the nation on the basis of merit. This year Jesuit is fortunate enough to have two of these finalists. Bill Haynie and Glenn Robicheaux City News Reporters The city newspaper correspondents have the all- important job of telling the city about the happenings of Jesuit High School. It’s their responsibility to let the city newspapers know when Jesuit High School has elected various officers or participated in some worthwhile community project. These two reporters (Middle Left picture L to R.) are Mark Nowery (Times) and Johnny Manno (Journal). New Faculty Members New members of this year’s faculty, (as pictured from R. to L) are Brother Walsh, Library Assistant; Mr. DeFatta, Instructor in Physical Education and Freshmen Basketball Coach; Mrs. Burgess, Instructor in English and World History; and Mrs. Griffin, Instructor in English. Not pictured is Mrs. Rubenstein, Instructor in Algebra. Jesuit High School is not a building, nor a congregation of classes, books, and studies. It is not molded by its extra curriculars nor is it kept alive by its athletic program. Jesuit High School is simply a handful of professional men and women, dedicated to the betterment of the students who attend this school. Seniors 74 o The purpose of the institution of Jesuit High School, as stated in the 1973 74 catalogue, is to make the student aware of the realities about him. This awareness includes three outstanding qualities. First, a profound realization of the essential goodne ss of creation and the divine love of God creation reveals; secondly, the development of a deepening sense of reverence for all the works of man; and lastly, a desire for a more courageous response to the challenges of our modem society.” The administrative staff of Jesuit function in such a way that these qualities can be instilled in each individual student. It is through the cooperation between the administration and faculty that each student is able to progress towards the attainment of this new awareness. B S, Treasurer MRS ANTHONY CALANTONE, Cafeteria Manager While the faculty strives to educate the Jesuit student for the betterment of society, the maintenance crew of Jesuit allows him to concentrate entirely on the fulfillment of these expectations by providing an environment conducive to learning. These dedicated workers are vital to the physical operation of the school. It has been said that we really never fully appreciate the importance of anything until we are without it. The Jesuit Maintenance crew provides a learning atmosphere that is functional, yet comfortable year round, enabling the student to concentrate on his work. Cafeteria Workers MNMi JAVA AVAVAV The Math and Science Departments of Jesuit High School have traditionally produced some of the best equipped students in these fields in Northwest Louisiana. This fact points out the quality of the courses offered and, more essentially, the skill of the teachers in charge of these subjects. Each student is offered an opportunity to study four sciences and four mathematics. Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and Trigonometry and Calculus all combine to provide each graduate with a strong foundation for college in any field in which he might endeavor. Introductory Physical Science and Biology arc offered the first two years with a Physics or Chemistry option open the third and fourth years. Chemistry students from Jesuit usually rank above all others in a comprehensive exam sponsored by the American Chemical Society. Jesuit High certainly provides each graduate with the knowledge and technique sought after in college and job recruiting. TOP LEFT REVEREND RUDOLPH B HORSTMANN. S.J. B S. To become a complete person and to be able to compete in today’s society, a person must be mentally as well as physically developed. Physical Education was the goal of the glorious Greek and Roman societies of long ago, as it is one of the goals of Jesuit High School. A wide variety of sports activities, such as football, basketball, soccer, softball, and weightlifting are offered to the student in physical education classes. In addition to these, a well-organized intramural league allows an individual to compete in intra-school athletics. Typing is often of more value to the college bound student than one realizes. The ability to organize and type reports neatly is a valuable skill sought after in many colleges and businesses. The language department at Jesuit serves two main purposes: to instruct the student about other ways of life and to give the students a better background in vocabulary. The Latin classes at Jesuit concentrate on giving the students a knowledge of the language on which most of the languages of the world are based The French and Spanish classes at Jesuit instruct the students in the language of foreign lands and the study of their cultures. Creative writing is stressed throughout the four years to prepare the student in methods of expressing himself to others. Nothing can be of more importance than expressing oneself in today’s society. In a society which often neglects the individual, expression of one’s ideas is of utmost significance in succeeding in one’s chosen field. These versatile courses offer an opportunity for Christians to explore and question their religious convictions. The openness of the courses allows freedom in dealing with any questions raised in class discussions. During the freshman year, students are exposed to ideas and opinions which may assist them in settling down and resolving any unanswered questions about their faith. The sophomore year introduces the student to himself, through a realization of the motives and influences which control his life. The problems and trials of the adolescent are dealt with. A study of the world’s religions is taken up in the Junior year. Finally, in the fourth year, the student is involved in social work, such as tutoring and day-care. These courses inspire each individual student to courageously respond to the challenges of today’s society. The social studies curriculum at Jesuit includes the study of Gvics, American History, and World History. Each course fulfills its goal of developing a sense of reverence for the works of man by explaining the customs and histories of civilizations past. Gvics reminds us of the heritage left to us by our Founding Fathers and the background of the laws and democratic system of government we are familiar with today. American History reveals the growth of a few scattered settlements in the sixteenth century, into the greatest nation on earth. And lastly. World History treats the passage of time from 3 Million years ago until the present in a concise volume of important events.
